Scrubland is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It has no rain or snow, and its ground is grass with scattered twiglet trees, bushes made of leaves and patches of tall grass. It covers about 0.54% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall. The biome is tagged as a savanna, so the savanna village and outpost sets can generate in it, and its monster table is long and includes many of the pack's horror mobs. A player should expect fights here and should not treat it as a safe place to cross after dark.

Description

Scrubland is open ground. The surface is grass block, and the trees are sparse. Scattered across it are three kinds of plant cover:

  • Twiglet trees are the main trees. They come in an acacia form, a spruce form and a tall form, and the acacia form is the default.
  • Scrub bushes are clusters of oak leaves set in the air above grass blocks. The leaves are persistent, so they do not decay when no log is nearby.
  • Grass and flowers are short grass, tall grass and a wildflower patch type placed on the open ground.

The biome's colours are a water colour of #3f76e4, a fog colour of #c0d8ff and a sky colour of #76a9ff. There is no precipitation, so rain and snow never fall on the biome.

Generation

Scrubland has a temperature of 1.1 and a downfall of 0.15. Its precipitation is none. Because of the warm temperature, frogs that spawn in warm biomes can appear here.

In Fear Nightfall, the biome's share of the surface is set by the pack's biome table rather than by the vanilla climate weights alone. The table gives every biome that is valid in a climate cell a weight, and the biomes in that cell share the space in proportion to those weights. Scrubland is not among the biomes that the pack weights 6× for horror, so its horror content comes from its mob and structure lists rather than from extra weighting. Its share of the underground cave layer at y = -30 is 0.14%.

Features

The biome uses the standard overworld ore set, which covers coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, and the granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, dirt and gravel blobs. The pack's added ore features from Born in Chaos, Butchery and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks are also placed here. These include infected diamond ore, deepslate sulfur ore and mithril ore.

Termite mounds are the most distinctive feature. A mound is placed during the underground decoration step, on a grass block whose surface above is air, leaves or a bush. It is built from packed mud, with a central column that rises two to four blocks above the grass and a wider base around it. Mounds are placed on average about once in every 12 chunks.

Scrub bushes are placed on about one chunk in four, with up to 64 placement attempts in each chunk. Each attempt picks a random empty spot near the grass and turns it into a persistent oak leaf block if the block below is grass. The result is a loose cluster of floating leaves rather than a full tree.

Twiglet trees are placed on the ground in only some chunks, with a weighted count that is zero in most chunks and six placement attempts in the rest.

Mobs and structures

Scrubland's monster table is long. It contains the vanilla zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers, slimes and endermen, along with a large set of pack mobs. The heaviest of those pack mobs are the Necromancer, the Dread Hound, the Bonescaller and the Slime Golem. Witches and zombie clowns also appear. The monster table is shown in the generated table below.

The passive mob table includes sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses and donkeys, and the ambient table includes bats. Scrubland also adds armadillos at a spawn weight of 6, so a player will find armadillos here more often than in most biomes.

Scrubland has a large number of structures that can generate in it. Among them are the Clown Caravan from Born in Chaos, the Illager Hideout and Manor from Nova Structures, the Catacombs and Evoker Fort from Iron's Spells, and savanna villages and pillager outposts from the pack's shared village and outpost sets. The structure table below lists the full set.

Tips

  • Carry light sources and a weapon before entering the biome after dark, because the monster table is long and most of its entries are hostile.
  • Termite mounds are solid packed mud and can block a path or cover a line of sight across open grass.
  • Because the biome has no precipitation, rain and snow never fall here.
