Crystalline Chasm

The Crystalline Chasm is a Nether biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a hot, dry cavern biome with no precipitation and a dark crimson fog. Its distinguishing feature is rose quartz formations that hang from the ceiling and rise from the floor, which set it apart from the other Nether biomes. Players mainly come here for the Rose Quartz it produces, for the ancient debris and other ore it contains, and for its striders.

Description

The biome has a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0, so it never rains or snows. Its fog is a dark crimson (#59002C). The ambient loop is the crimson forest sound, and the mood sound is the basalt deltas sound, played every 6000 ticks. Electric spark particles appear occasionally, with a probability of about 0.09% per tick. The biome has its own background music, which plays every 12000 to 24000 ticks and does not replace the music already playing.

The terrain is carved with the vanilla Nether cave carver. The main visual element is the large rose quartz formation: pale, faceted columns that grow from the ceiling and the floor. They are broad, with a column radius of 3 to 7 blocks, and their height scale varies between 0.3 and 1.8, so some formations are short stubs and others are tall pillars that nearly span the cavern. Smaller clusters and buds of rose quartz cover the remaining surfaces.

Generation

Crystalline Chasm generates in the Nether. In the base mod it takes the place of Soul Sand Valley at four points of the common Nether region, and Fear Nightfall's biome table then assigns it by climate alongside the other Nether biomes that allow it there. Its share of Nether space is shown in the infobox. It is not one of the horror biomes that the pack gives 6 times the weight of other biomes.

Features

The biome's features are:

• Large rose quartz formations. Six attempts per chunk. Each formation is a column built from rose quartz, with the wind and bluntness settings that give the formations their irregular shapes.
• Rose quartz clusters and buds. One hundred attempts per chunk. Each attempt places a cluster, a large bud, a medium bud or a small bud of rose quartz on a free block, facing a random direction. A block can only hold a cluster if it survives there, so the crystals appear on both floors and ceilings.
• Ores. Magma blocks, gravel, blackstone, nether gold ore, nether quartz ore, large and small ancient debris clusters, and the debris features that the Nether uses for netherite. Ancient debris is the main reason to mine here, since it provides netherite.
• Glowstone and fungi. Glowstone clusters, brown mushrooms and red mushrooms.
• Springs. Both open and closed lava springs.
• Nether Expansion features. Blotted netherrack, netherrack speleothems, pyroclast crusts and silt flint ore.

The rose quartz blocks, buds and clusters that these features place are the same blocks that the mod sells as building material. Rose quartz is also a trim material.

Mobs and structures

The only creature in the biome's spawn list is the strider, with a weight of 60, in groups of one or two. Striders are the most common mobs here, and they can be ridden with a warped fungus on a stick. The water-ambient list has eleven weighted aquatic creatures, which are shown in the table below.

The Nether structures that can generate in Crystalline Chasm include fortresses, bastion remnants, nether keeps and skeleton towers, and many mod structures. The table below lists the full set. Chests in these structures contain the loot tables of the mod that adds them, plus the pack's additions.

Tips

• The biome has lava springs and magma blocks. Keep fire resistance or water nearby when crossing the open floor.
• The rose quartz formations can block a passage. Mine them with a pickaxe to clear a route.
• Ancient debris is among the ores, so this biome is a place to collect it for netherite. Mining ancient debris requires a diamond pickaxe or better.
• Striders are the only creature in the spawn list. A warped fungus on a stick steers them and lets a player ride across lava.
