The Cold Desert is an overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a barren, frozen landscape of bare stone, gravel and patches of snow, with almost no vegetation. Its climate is cold and completely dry, so no rain or snow falls there. In Fear Nightfall the biome is rare, covering about 0.36% of the land surface, and its monster spawn table is one of the longest in the pack.

Description

The terrain is flat to gently rolling. The surface is built from the biome's own surface rules: the top layer is gravel, with patches of snow block and powder snow where the surface noise is higher, and the layers below are stone. Ceilings and deep underground layers are stone as well, so the biome reads as grey and white rather than the warm tan of a normal desert.

The grass colour is tan (#ad9364) and the foliage colour is a pale straw (#b5a76c). Water is a clear blue (#3f76e4). The sky is a cool blue (#7da3ff) and the fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff), which gives the biome a cold, washed-out look in daylight. Vegetation is sparse.

Generation

Cold Desert has a temperature of 0.25 and a downfall of 0, so it has no precipitation. It is placed in cold, dry overworld climate space. In Fear Nightfall, the biome covers about 0.36% of the land surface and about 0.02% of the cave layer at y = -30. It is not among the biomes that the pack weights 6× for horror, so its share is set by the normal biome distribution. It is not one of the forests, taigas or swamps where the pack concentrates horror biomes.

The biome counts as a snowy villager type, so villages that generate here use snowy building styles. Wolves and polar bears spawn in the biome as passive or neutral creatures.

Features

Cold Desert has a small set of unique terrain features:

  • Cold desert rocks: cobblestone boulders scattered across the surface. They are placed on average once every two chunks, and they are the main surface decoration of the biome.
  • Lava lakes: the biome's lake features place lava lakes both on the surface and underground.
  • Amethyst geodes and monster rooms: these generate underground.
  • Plants: wild flax, wild potatoes and wasteland grass patches are placed here.
  • Cave urns: decorative urns from Supplementaries generate in caves.

Ore generation includes the full vanilla ore set (coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, including buried, medium and large diamond veins), plus dirt, gravel and andesite/diorite/granite/tuff veins. Born in Chaos adds its own ore features here, including infected diamond ore and black argillite.

Mobs and structures

The monster spawn table is one of the longest in the pack. The most common hostile mobs are the vanilla Spider, Skeleton and Creeper, all with weight 100, and the vanilla Zombie with weight 95. Slimes also have weight 100. Much of the rest of the table is made of horror mobs from the pack, including Revenants, Necromancers, Slime Golems, Dread Hounds, Nightmare variants, Krampus, Lifestealers and mutant variants of the vanilla mobs. Water spawns include Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish from Born in Chaos. Shima Enaga is a passive creature that spawns here. Many of the horror mobs have weights between 1 and 7, so each is uncommon on its own.

Structures that can generate in Cold Desert include the Ice Spider Den and Impaled Icebreaker from Iron's Spellbooks generate here, and the Ice Spider patrol tag applies to the biome, so ice spiders can appear on the surface. The Altar (The Graveyard), Catacombs and vanilla igloos can also generate here. See Graveyards for more on the Graveyard structures.

Passive mobs are few. Wolves and polar bears are the passive or neutral land creatures, and bats and glow squid appear in caves and underground water.

Tips

  • Plan trips to the biome for daylight. Its hostile mob table is heavy, and the sparse vegetation gives little cover.
  • The biome has no rain, so water sources have to be found in the lakes and rivers that generate there.
  • The biome's lake features include lava, both on the surface and underground. Check for lava before digging downwards.
  • The ore table includes diamond, iron and gold, so mining the exposed stone is worthwhile.
  • For the barren Wasteland biome, see Wasteland.
