The Mutant Monsters mod adds boss-scale versions of several vanilla mobs, a tamable creeper companion, a potion that turns ordinary mobs into mutants, and a small set of tools and armour built around the mutants. The mutants are Mutant Creepers, Mutant Endermen, Mutant Skeletons, Mutant Zombies, Mutant Snow Golems and the Spider Pig. A player who meets one is facing a mob with several times the health of its vanilla form and a set of area attacks, and most of them leave behind something the vanilla mob does not.
The mod is a content add-on. Its mobs are added next to their vanilla counterparts rather than replacing them, and each mutant spawns at a small fraction of the weight of the vanilla mob it mirrors. Fear Nightfall keeps all of the mod's settings at their defaults.
Overview
In Fear Nightfall the mod adds a layer of rare, dangerous monsters to the night. The mutants have no spawn entries of their own. They are added to the monster spawn lists of every biome where the matching vanilla zombie, skeleton, creeper or enderman spawns, and they are also found in any other dimension where those vanilla mobs spawn. Because they draw on the vanilla lists, the pack's biome layout decides where they are common. The mod adds no ores, dimensions, structures or blocks, apart from the Mutant Skeleton Skull.
Content
Mutant mobs
- Mutant Creeper is a hostile creeper that leaps, charges and summons Creeper Minions. Its death explosion is much larger than a vanilla creeper's.
- Mutant Enderman has 200 health and clones itself, throws blocks and teleports its targets.
- Mutant Skeleton has 150 health, fires multi-arrow volleys, and breaks apart into body parts when it dies.
- Mutant Zombie has 150 health and attacks with ground-shaking seismic waves. It summons new zombies from the ground.
- Mutant Snow Golem has 80 health and throws ice. It does not spawn naturally, so a player must use a spawn egg or Chemical X to get one.
- The Spider Pig is a tamable, saddleable pig variant with 40 health. It leaps at targets and leaves cobwebs behind.
The mod also has seven spawn eggs, one for each of the mobs above plus the Creeper Minion.
Creeper Minion
The Creeper Minion is a tamable creeper with 4 health that can ride on its owner's shoulder. A player gets one by hatching a Creeper Minion Egg. The egg is dropped by a Mutant Creeper killed by a player. The
Creeper Minion Tracker is a remote that sets the minion's blast radius, whether it destroys blocks, whether it explodes once or continuously, its health, whether it rides on the shoulder, and whether its name is always shown. See Pets and Companions for other tamed mobs.
Items
- The
Creeper Shard is an uncommon explosive tool that creates an explosion at its user's feet. - The
Endersoul Hand is an epic-rarity teleport tool. - The Mutant Skeleton armour set has a chestplate, leggings and boots, plus a Mutant Skeleton Skull that is worn as a helmet and placed as a block. Its arms and rib cage have crafting recipes. Its limbs, pelvis, ribs and shoulder pads are loot-only components. The armour is listed under Armor.
- Chemical X is a potion and mob effect that converts mobs into mutants.
The mod also includes a Hulk Hammer. It is not available on NeoForge, so it is not covered here.
Mechanics
Chemical X
Chemical X is brewed from a Thick potion with one of the Endersoul Hand, the Creeper Shard or the Mutant Skeleton Skull. It comes as a potion, a splash potion, a lingering potion and a tipped arrow. When it hits, it spawns a Skull Spirit on each eligible mob it affects, except bosses, mutants, Creeper Minions and Endersoul Clones. The spirit attaches to its target for about 80 to 119 ticks, then explodes with a radius of 2 blocks. If the mob has a conversion entry, the spirit then converts it to its mutant form with a 3 in 4 chance. Baby mobs are not converted.
The conversions are set in the server config. Their defaults are creeper to Mutant Creeper, enderman to Mutant Enderman, skeleton to Mutant Skeleton, snow golem to Mutant Snow Golem, zombie to Mutant Zombie and pig to Spider Pig. A pig is converted only if it has Unluck. Unluck is applied by right-clicking the pig with a Fermented Spider Eye, which lasts 600 ticks.
Mutant Creeper death and the Creeper Minion egg
A Mutant Creeper begins to explode 100 ticks after it dies. The explosion has a power of 8, or 12 if the creeper was charged, and pulls nearby entities in. If a player kills it and the doMobLoot game rule is on, it drops a Creeper Minion Egg. The egg hatches after a countdown of 60 to 99 minutes, chosen when the egg is created. It hatches only if it has an owner. Hurting the egg causes a TNT-style explosion, and the egg can drop gunpowder or a Creeper Shard.
Endersoul Hand
The Endersoul Hand has 240 durability. Using it teleports the player up to 256 blocks, a distance set by the server config. A successful teleport costs 4 durability and starts a 200-tick cooldown. A failed teleport shows "Unable to teleport to location" and costs nothing. Tossing an Ender Eye or a damaged Endersoul Hand within 8 blocks of the player's own Endersoul Fragments consumes them. An Ender Eye spawns a new hand, and a damaged hand is repaired by 60 durability for each fragment.
Creeper Shard
The Creeper Shard has 16 durability and is explosion-resistant as an item. Using it creates an explosion at the player's feet with a radius of 5 multiplied by its remaining durability divided by 16, plus 2 if the shard is undamaged. Each use costs 1 durability and starts a cooldown of (maximum durability minus damage) times 2 ticks. The explosion uses TNT-style block damage when the player is allowed to build. Hitting a mob with the shard knocks it back. While the shard is damaged, a hit can also give the player Poison, with a 1 in 4 chance.
Mutant Skeleton armour
The armour set has the following effects while it is worn:
- The boots give Jump Boost II for 100 ticks.
- The leggings give Speed II.
- The chestplate draws a bow 2 ticks faster while the draw is below full power.
- The skull adds Multishot to bows, so a shot fires an extra arrow pattern. Damage taken while wearing it wears down the skull.
Seismic waves
Mutant Zombie slams and some other mutant attacks send seismic waves across the ground. Each wave is a series of ground tiles that hit living entities standing on them. Waves deal 6 to 8 damage to the entities they hit. Waves can break blocks, and the block changes respect the mobGriefing game rule.
Mutant Enderman and Mutant Snow Golem terrain
The Mutant Enderman picks up and places blocks, and the Mutant Snow Golem places ice and snow. Both respect the mobGriefing game rule. Blocks that are tagged as immune to holding, such as bedrock and obsidian, cannot be taken by the enderman.
Changes to vanilla
- Monster spawns. Each vanilla zombie, skeleton, creeper and enderman spawn entry gets a matching mutant entry at the same time. The mutant's weight is scaled from the vanilla entry by its config value, which defaults to 0.05. The mutant spawn cost is copied from the vanilla entry.
- Avoidance. Cats and ocelots avoid Mutant Creepers. Villagers and wandering traders avoid Mutant Zombies. Pigs flee players who hold Fermented Spider Eyes.
- Skulls. A vanilla mob killed by a charged Mutant Creeper or Creeper Minion explosion drops its vanilla head: creeper, zombie, skeleton, wither skeleton or ender dragon.
- Shields. Mutated explosions can disable a shield for 100 or 200 ticks, and they damage a shielding player at half damage.
- Ravagers. Mutant Zombie slams stun any Ravager they hit.
- Brewing. Chemical X is added as a brewing recipe from the Thick potion base.
In Fear Nightfall
Fear Nightfall keeps every setting of the mod at its default. The four spawn weights are 0.05, the Endersoul Hand distance is 256 blocks, and the Chemical X conversion list is the default list. The pack makes no content changes to the mod.
The mutants count toward the monster spawn cap, as do the other hostile mobs in the pack. The pack already halved the spawn weights of Born in Chaos after its mobs crowded out vanilla monsters, so the cap is shared with a large number of other mobs. The mutants add to that competition in every biome where their vanilla counterparts spawn. They are most dangerous at night, when hostile mobs spawn in dark areas.
