Pets and Companions
Pets and Companions covers the creatures in Fear Nightfall that a player can tame, own, summon or build to help. The pack draws them from nine mods. Critters and Companions supplies the largest group of tameable land and water creatures. Hexerei adds the Crow helper and the Owl courier. Mutant Monsters adds the Creeper Minion and the Spider Pig. The Graveyard adds the Ghouling companion. Golem Overhaul adds golems that players build and command. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Born in Chaos add summoned allies. Farmer's Delight and Supplementaries add the food and tools that keep pets healthy and mobile.
Pets matter to the pack for two reasons. Tamed creatures give steady help, such as crops harvested by a crow or items carried by an owl. Several companions are also tied to the horror theme. A Ghouling is summoned from a bone staff, a Creeper Minion hatches from an egg dropped by a Mutant Creeper, and taming an animal lowers a player's hidden naughtiness score (see Naughtiness and Krampus).
Tameable critters
Critters and Companions adds about seventeen creatures to the Overworld. Most are ambient animals, and many can be tamed. Each has its own page:
- Land and air: Dragonfly, Ferret, Jumping Spider, Ladybug, Leaf Insect, Red Panda, Roly Poly, Shima Enaga, Snail, Stag Beetle, Stick Bug and Weevil.
- Water: Dumbo Octopus, Koi Fish, Sea Bunny and Otter.
Some of the mod's items support the companions. The Silk Lead attaches to several creatures at once, and the Grappling Hook is a separate tool that the mod adds for travel. Tamed creatures of the mod can sit beside chests, Ferrets sleep on beds, and a tamed Roly Poly carries a chest. Each creature's taming and feeding details are on its own page.
Land critters spawn with the vanilla spawner in forest, jungle, plains, swamp, river, snowy and lush biomes. Lush Caves use a separate spawner, described on the Critters and Companions page.
Hexerei crows and owls
Hexerei adds two flying companions.
The Crow spawns in forests and is tamed by feeding it Seed Mixture, which has a 1 in 10 chance per feeding. A tamed crow is commanded with the Crow Flute, which sets it to Follow, Sit, Wander or Help. In Help mode a crow gathers dropped items, harvests crops, or pickpockets villagers. A crow can also wear the Crow Ankh Amulet, which lets it survive one fatal hit.
The Owl spawns only in the Dark Forest biome. A wild owl is tamed by feeding it salmon or cod, with a 1 in 5 chance per feeding. A tamed owl cannot attack. It delivers sealed Courier Packages and Courier Letters to players and to Courier Depots, as part of the Owl Post Office system.
Mutant Monsters companions
Mutant Monsters adds two companions.
- The Creeper Minion is a tamable creeper with 4 health. It does not spawn naturally. A Mutant Creeper killed by a player can leave a Creeper Minion Egg, which hatches into a tamed minion after 60 to 99 minutes. The
Creeper Minion Tracker is a remote that sets the minions' blast radius, block damage, health and shoulder-riding. - The Spider Pig is a saddleable pig variant that attacks spiders and pigs and leaves cobwebs behind. It does not spawn naturally. It is obtained from its spawn egg, by applying Chemical X to a pig that has Unluck, or by breeding tamed Spider Pigs. A wild Spider Pig becomes tame to a player when it kills that player's Creeper Minion. A tamed Spider Pig can be saddled and ridden, and it heals 1 health every 600 ticks.
Graveyard Ghoulings
The Graveyard adds the Ghouling, a companion that never spawns in the world. Each of the five bone staffs (white, black, red, cyan and purple) summons one Ghouling for the player who first used it. A staff summons a new Ghouling only after the old one has died. A Ghouling has 50 health and 6.5 attack damage. It follows its owner and can hold a coffin or sarcophagus as portable storage. The staff also gives commands. Right-clicking the Ghouling toggles sitting. Right-clicking the air sends it after the nearest creature in the crosshair within 100 blocks. Crouching and right-clicking the air recalls it to its owner.
Ghoulings are not the same as Ghoul mobs. Ghouls are hostile creatures that appear in the graveyard's nightly hordes and in biome spawns.
Golems
Golem Overhaul adds nine golems, each built or spawned in its own way. A player-created golem does not attack players, though it still fights back when hit. Each golem is repaired by right-clicking it while holding the repair item. The construction methods are covered on Golem Construction, and each golem is described on the Golem Overhaul page. The Netherite Golem can be ridden, and it summons Coal Golems while it has a target. In this pack the summon key is the period key, because the mod's default key clashed with another mod (see Controls and Keybinds).
Summoned allies
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks spells create temporary allies. A summoned creature is owned by the caster and removed when its duration ends. The allies include summoned Vexes, zombies, skeletons, polar bears and spectral steeds. They are listed on Summoned Creatures, and the spells that create them are described on Spellcasting.
Born in Chaos supplies a companion for the Spirit Guide. The Controlled Baby Skeleton is summoned with a Bonescaller staff while the Spiritual Guide Sombrero is worn. It is tamable, but no item tames or heals it.
Food and tools
Pet Food from Farmer's Delight heals tamed wolves and tamed horse-type mounts. Dog Food heals a tamed wolf to full health and gives it Speed I, Strength I and Resistance I for 5 minutes. Horse Feed heals a tamed horse to full health and gives it Speed II and Jump Boost I for the same time.
The Flute and Wrench from Supplementaries summons pets. A flute holds up to six bound pets, which can be horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, camels and foxes. Right-clicking with a bound flute teleports every bound pet within 64 blocks to its holder.
Pack changes
- Hexerei's recipe-book advancement pointed at itself, which orphaned every recipe advancement. The vanilla root was restored.
- Five mod-versus-mod key conflicts were fixed with default keybinds, including the golem summon key, which moved to the period key.
- Hexerei chests are shared containers when Lootr is installed, so the first player to open a chest takes its contents. This includes the Crow and Owl loot.
- The naughtiness mechanic is switched off in this pack, so the taming effect on Krampus does not apply (see Naughtiness and Krampus).
Tips
- Tame a crow early, while the forest is still quiet. Carry spare Seed Mixture, since the taming roll is only 1 in 10.
- Feed a wild owl salmon or cod repeatedly. Each attempt has a 1 in 5 chance.
- Give a Harvest crow a whitelist on a mixed farm, or it will harvest every crop in range.
- Kill a Mutant Creeper yourself to have a chance at a Creeper Minion Egg. Keep the egg away from explosions and TNT, since hurting it breaks it.
- Use a Ghouling's air-target command against a dangerous creature such as a Revenant or a Ghoul from a nightly horde.
