The Coal Golem is a small passive golem added by Golem Overhaul. It wanders cave biomes as an ambient creature and does nothing until it is lit. A lit Coal Golem runs at the nearest target and detonates on contact, setting that target on fire, so it works both as a cheap ranged fire-starter and as a hazard in dark caves.

Coal Golems can be crafted from coal, thrown or dispensed by players, and summoned in groups of five by a Netherite Golem. Most of their natural spawn biomes are underground caves.

Spawning

Coal Golems spawn naturally in 37 biomes, including cave biomes such as Lush Caves, Deep Caves, Infested Caves, Lost Caves, Underground Jungle, Spider Nest and Redstone Caves, and some surface biomes such as Orchard, Rainforest and Lavender Field. They use the ambient spawn category with a weight of 20 and groups of 3 to 5 golems. The full biome list and weights are in the table below.

A natural spawn requires all of the following:

  • the position is below sea level;
  • the block below the position is not grass;
  • the biome is not the Deep Dark, even though the Deep Dark appears in the spawn table below. The spawn check rejects it;
  • the normal vanilla mob spawn rules pass.

Natural spawning can be turned off with the spawnCoalGolems option in the Golem Overhaul config. The option defaults to on.

Coal Golems are also produced by two other sources:

  • Dispensers. A dispenser loaded with a Coal Golem item fires one golem. The golem is lit when it is fired if the block in front of the dispenser is fire.
  • Netherite Golem summon. A Netherite Golem that is charged can summon Coal Golems. It summons five lit golems around itself partway through a 60-tick summon animation. See the Netherite Golem page for the trigger conditions and cooldown.

Behavior

A Coal Golem has 10 health (5 hearts), a movement speed of 0.35 and a follow range of 16. It is fire immune and drops 1 experience point when killed.

Unlit

An unlit Coal Golem deals 2 melee damage and does not target anything, so it ignores players and mobs. Fire damage lights it. Right-clicking an unlit golem with flint and steel or a fire charge also lights it. Flint and steel loses one point of durability, and a fire charge is consumed.

Lit

A lit Coal Golem is the only state in which it attacks. Its melee damage rises to 12, and it leaps at its target with a leap strength of 0.5. When a lit golem's melee hit lands:

  • the target is set on fire for 5 seconds;
  • the golem dies immediately, with an explosion sound and flame particles.

The death does not create an explosion. The hit deals its 12 damage and sets the target on fire, and nothing more. Right-clicking a lit golem with an empty hand extinguishes it and returns it to the unlit state.

Throwing

Players can throw Coal Golems. Holding the use button charges the throw, and releasing it throws between 1 and 4 golems depending on the charge. The thresholds are 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, and a higher charge throws more golems. There is a 10-tick cooldown between throws. Thrown golems are marked as player-created, so they stop attacking players. If the player holds flint and steel or a fire charge in the offhand, the thrown golems are lit. A thrown golem takes no fall damage while it is in flight.

Summoned golems

Coal Golems summoned by a Netherite Golem differ from naturally spawned ones in three ways:

  • they can target even while unlit, and they target like lit golems do;
  • they copy their summoner's current target every tick, so they converge on whatever the Netherite Golem is attacking;
  • they despawn after 2400 ticks (2 minutes), and they drop no loot when they die.

Drops

A Coal Golem's loot table drops coal. The table below shows the exact amounts. Golems summoned by a Netherite Golem drop nothing.

ItemAmountConditions
Coal

The Coal Golem item stacks to 16 and is used to release golems by throwing or dispensing. It is crafted from coal: the recipe uses 8 coal (any item in the #minecraft:coals tag) and yields 4 Coal Golem items. Alternative coal recipes are shown in the recipe grid below.

The Coal Golem spawn egg, Coal Golem Spawn Egg, stacks to 64 and spawns one golem when used.

Tips

  • Keep fire away from unlit golems. Any fire damage lights an unlit Coal Golem, including burning blocks and fire from other sources. A golem lit by accident will attack the nearest target it can reach.
  • Expect them in groups. Natural spawns come in groups of 3 to 5, so a cave with one Coal Golem often has more nearby. Deal with the whole group before lighting any of them.
