The Barrel Golem is a passive golem mob added by Golem Overhaul. It has 40 health (20 hearts), armor 6, and never attacks. It lives in villages, where it opens and closes like a barrel on a daily cycle and trades emeralds for random items. A Barrel Golem is worth finding for its bartering, which yields seeds, saplings, leather, eggs, iron, and other common materials, and for the 10 experience it drops when killed. In Fear Nightfall it is one of several golem variants that the pack's village set can produce, so it appears only in villages and does not spawn in the wild.

Spawning

A Barrel Golem spawns in villages. It is placed by the village's common iron golem spawn piece, at the same spot where a vanilla Iron Golem can appear, and a Barrel Golem and a Hay Golem are each tried there when that piece is generated. The Barrel Golem has no biome spawn entries and does not spawn naturally in the open world, in caves, or in any other biome. Its spawn is also checked against the spawn rules and the spawnBarrelGolems config option, which is enabled by default.

Because it spawns through a village piece, the Barrel Golem appears only where the village includes that piece. The pack's villages are a mix of vanilla, Luki's Grand Capitals, CTOV, Towns and Towers, Dungeons and Taverns, Villages & Pillages and Terralith fortified villages, each type weighted equally. The stats table for spawn data is below.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The Barrel Golem has no targeting and never attacks, despite its attack damage attribute of 1. It walks slowly at a movement speed of 0.31 and has a follow range of 16 blocks.

Daily cycle

The Barrel Golem alternates between open and closed states during daylight:

  • While it is day, a timer of 800 to 1599 ticks (40 to 80 seconds) counts down. When it reaches zero, the golem toggles between open and closed.
  • At night, an open Barrel Golem closes immediately and stays closed until dawn.
  • At dawn it wakes over 62 ticks, and then opens again if it is closed.
  • A Barrel Golem spawned where the sky is dark starts closed. Otherwise it starts open.

While closed, the golem cannot move, cannot be collided with, and is not hurt by ordinary damage the way it is when open:

  • Arrows that are not on fire deal no damage.
  • Non-fire damage is divided by 10.
  • Fire damage is doubled, and it forces the golem open.

Bartering

An open Barrel Golem trades emeralds for items. Right-clicking it with an emerald, while the golem is open and its main hand is empty, starts a barter. It also picks up emerald item entities within 16 blocks while open, and then barters with them.

A barter lasts 78 ticks (about 4 seconds). At tick 24 the golem throws items from its barter table toward the player who gave the emerald, or to a random nearby spot if no player is recorded. It also spawns 2 to 4 experience orbs. The golem is immobile while bartering. The barter table follows the piglin pattern. It contains plantable seeds and saplings (both as item tags, 1 to 5 each), a water potion, eggs, leather, iron ingots, wheat, nuggets, and other common items. The full table is not listed here.

Repair

A Barrel Golem can be repaired by right-clicking it with planks. Each repair heals 5 health.

Drops

When killed, the Barrel Golem drops raw cod, wheat, iron nuggets, gold nuggets, flint, carrots, iron ingots, gold ingots, emeralds, and an iron helmet, with the counts shown in the table below. Its barter table is separate from these death drops.

Tips

Right-click a Barrel Golem with an emerald while it is open to barter. Do this in daylight, because the golem closes at night and cannot be bartered with while closed.

Close the golem before it is hurt by ordinary melee, because damage is divided by 10 while it is closed. Fire is the exception: it doubles fire damage and opens the golem.

Use planks to repair a damaged Barrel Golem.

The Barrel Golem is safe to leave in its village. It is a useful source of common materials, and it never attacks the player.
