The Candle Golem is a passive, construction-only mob added by Golem Overhaul. It is built from a Candle Golem Block rather than spawning in the world, and it has two combat states: unlit, it fights in melee, and lit, it throws fire at nearby mobs. Its flames set targets on fire, which makes it useful for guarding a base. Because it is never generated naturally, a Candle Golem exists only where a player has built one.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
The Candle Golem has no natural spawn entries in any biome and does not appear in villages, structures or pumpkin builds. It is created only from a Candle Golem Block, which is itself crafted (see the recipe table below). The block is a single-block pattern under the Golem Construction system; no other blocks are involved.
The block releases its golem in one of two ways:
- Right-click. Right-clicking an unlit Candle Golem Block with flint and steel or a fire charge lights the block instead of releasing the golem. Right-clicking it with any other item, or while it is already lit, releases the golem and removes the block. Waterlogged blocks cannot be lit this way and always release the golem.
- Redstone. A redstone signal applied to the block releases the golem and removes the block.
The golem keeps the lit or unlit state of the block it came from. A lit block gives a lit golem, and a lit golem's ranged attack is available from the moment it appears.
The golem is always player-created. It never spawns with the natural-spawn flag, so it does not attack players, and it has no configuration option in Golem Overhaul's config. Golem spawn toggles in the config do not affect it.
Behavior
Unlit
An unlit Candle Golem has 15 health (7.5 hearts), moves at speed 0.3 and follows targets within 16 blocks. It attacks in melee for 3 damage. Like the other golems of Golem Overhaul, it attacks nearby hostile mobs within range, except creepers.
Lit
A lit Candle Golem uses a ranged attack instead of melee when it has a target within 15 blocks. It fires one candle flame every 20 ticks. Each shot costs the golem 0.02 health, so a long fight slowly wears it down.
A candle flame deals 3 damage to the target and sets the target on fire for 5 seconds. A flame is removed after 100 ticks if it has not hit anything. Flames do not damage other Candle Golems or Terracotta Golems.
A Candle Golem is lit by:
- standing in lava;
- taking fire damage;
- being struck with flint and steel or a fire charge.
It is extinguished by empty-hand right-clicking it, by water, or by rain. Once its health falls below 33%, it can no longer be lit, so a damaged unlit golem stays in melee mode until repaired.
Sitting
Right-clicking the golem with an empty hand (without sneaking) toggles sitting. A sitting golem cannot move, has knockback resistance of 1, and takes only 10% of incoming damage. Sitting is the simplest way to keep a golem in place as a stationary guard.
Targeting and repair
Mobs that are set to attack iron golems also attack Candle Golems under Golem Overhaul's changes to targeting. Golems do not attack other golems, iron golems or snow golems. A Candle Golem can be healed by right-clicking it with any item in the wax tag, which includes honeycomb. Each use restores 5 health and consumes one item.

Candle |
A Candle Golem always drops exactly one candle. The drop is not affected by looting, and it is not given bonus rolls. The golem also gives its standard experience reward when killed.
Related items
- Candle Golem Block (
Candle Golem Block) is the item used to create the golem. It is placed like a block, lit with flint and steel or a fire charge, and released by right-click or redstone. The block's light level is 12 while it is lit. - Candle Golem Spawn Egg (
Candle Golem Spawn Egg) summons a Candle Golem directly, without a block. - Candle Flame is the projectile fired by a lit golem. It is not an item and cannot be collected.
The recipes that make the Candle Golem Block are shown below.
Tips
- Light the block only when you want the ranged attack. An unlit golem is a weak melee guard, and it cannot be lit again once it drops below 33% health.
- Keep the golem out of rain and water if you need its fire to last, since both extinguish it immediately.
- Fire damage and lava light a golem, so a golem standing near a fire source switches to ranged mode without any action on your part.
- Sitting a golem with an empty-hand right-click gives a stationary guard with reduced damage taken, which suits a fixed defensive post.
- Repair with honeycomb to restore 5 health per item. Use it before a golem falls under 33% health, because a golem below that threshold cannot be lit.
