Golem Construction is the set of methods that Golem Overhaul uses to create its golems from blocks and items instead of natural spawning. Golem Overhaul adds nine golem mobs. Several of them are built in the world from a pattern of blocks, converted from a block, or thrown from a crafted item. A player who wants a golem that cannot spawn naturally needs to know which pattern or trigger produces it.

The mod adds two build blocks, the Candle Golem Block and the Clay Golem Statue. Five golems use a construction recipe, and the Hay Golem and Netherite Golem patterns are also checked on every carved pumpkin build attempt, so a pumpkin placed in the right spot can produce a golem even when no iron golem is formed.

Obtaining

The Clay Golem Statue, the Candle Golem Block and the Coal Golem item are made at a crafting table. Hay Golems, Netherite Golems and Kelp Golems are not crafted. They are built in the world by placing their pattern from the blocks listed in the Usage section.

The Clay Golem Statue uses two clay blocks and two clay balls. The Candle Golem Block uses six honeycomb and one string. Eight coal makes four Coal Golem items. These are the only crafting recipes that the mod adds for golems, and it does not change any vanilla recipe.

Usage

Each construction method has its own trigger. The golem's own page gives its health, attacks and behaviour.

Build patterns

  • Hay Golem: a hay block in the centre, wooden fences, and a carved pumpkin on top. The pattern is checked on every carved pumpkin build attempt. Hay Golems can also spawn in villages built from the iron golem template. See Hay Golem.
  • Netherite Golem: a carved pumpkin on top of four ancient debris blocks. See Netherite Golem.
  • Kelp Golem: a pattern of dried kelp blocks and a sea lantern. Kelp Golems are water-bound and cannot spawn naturally. See Kelp Golem.
  • Candle Golem: a Candle Golem Block. Right-clicking it with any item, or sending it a redstone signal, turns it into a Candle Golem. Flint and steel or a fire charge lights an unlit block first. See Candle Golem.
  • Coal Golem: not a build pattern. The Coal Golem item is thrown, or fired from a dispenser, and it becomes a Coal Golem. See Coal Golem.

Clay Golem Statue

The Clay Golem Statue is a random-ticking block that becomes a Terracotta Golem. It converts in one of two ways:

  • when it receives a redstone signal from a neighbouring block, or
  • on a random tick, when the block light at its position is above 11 minus the block's light-blocking value, or when the biome's base temperature is above 1.

When a statue converts, it is removed and replaced by a Terracotta Golem that is marked as player-created and always starts as the normal subtype. The statue's tooltip says that it can be melted like ice into a Terracotta Golem, but the mod has no melting behaviour. The two triggers above are the only ways a statue turns into a golem.

Because the random-tick check runs on its own, a statue in a bright area or a warm biome can convert without any player action. A statue in a dark area with a normal temperature stays a statue until a redstone signal reaches it.

Player-created golems

A player-created golem does not attack players, but it still fights back when hit. Construction golems are player-created in the following cases:

  • Netherite, Kelp and Candle golems are always player-created, because they cannot spawn naturally.
  • A golem that can spawn naturally, such as the Hay, Coal or Terracotta golem, is player-created when the mod's spawn switch for its type is off.
  • Statue conversions are always player-created.

Server notes

  • A datapack that removes or overrides the golem construction recipes causes an error each time a matching pumpkin or placement event happens. The Hay, Kelp and Netherite golem patterns look up their recipe without a fallback, so these recipes should be left in place.
