The Terracotta Golem is one of nine golem mobs added by Golem Overhaul. It is a passive golem with 30 health (15 hearts) that spawns in badlands biomes and in mesa mineshafts, and that can also be built from a Clay Golem Statue. Terracotta golems come in three subtypes: a melee golem with a thorns-style counterattack, a plain melee golem, and a ranged golem that fires mud balls. A player is most likely to meet one while crossing badlands, where the golems are a common source of ranged fire.
Spawning
Natural spawns use the biome tag #c:is_badlands together with the vanilla structure tag for mesa mineshafts (minecraft:has_structure/mineshaft_mesa). Two more biomes are added when their mods are installed: Terralith's savanna badlands and Biomes We've Gone's Atacama Outback. Each natural spawn has a weight of 6 and appears in groups of one or two. The full biome list is in the table below.
| Biome | Mod | Weight | Group | Category | Biome share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Badlands | Minecraft | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.46% |
| Snowy Badlands | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.40% |
| Outback | Regions Unexplored | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.21% |
| Savanna Badlands | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.24% |
| Wooded Badlands | Minecraft | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.23% |
| Eroded Badlands | Minecraft | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.15% |
| Bryce Canyon | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.16% |
| White Mesa | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.04% |
| Red Oasis | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.03% |
| Painted Mountains | Terralith | 6 | 1–2 | creature | 0.00% |
Natural spawns are placed on the ground, with the surface check ignoring leaves. They also require the mod's master spawn switch and the Terracotta toggle in the mod config to be enabled.
Each natural spawn is given a random subtype, normal, cactus or dead bush, with a one-third chance for each. The subtypes are described under Behavior, below.
Clay Golem Statue
Terracotta golems can also come from the Clay Golem Statue block. A statue turns into a golem in one of two ways:
- when it receives a redstone signal from a neighbouring block, or
- on a random tick, when either the block light at its position is greater than 11 minus the statue's light-blocking value, or the biome's base temperature is above 1.
When a statue converts, it is replaced by a Terracotta Golem marked as player-created, and that golem always starts as the normal subtype. The statue's tooltip says it can be melted like ice into a Terracotta Golem, but the mod has no melting logic, so these two triggers are the only ways a statue converts.
Behavior
Terracotta golems share the golem AI used by all of the mod's golems. They have a melee attack, a hurt-by-target goal that makes them retaliate against whatever damages them, and a target search for hostile mobs (creepers excluded). Natural golems therefore attack hostile mobs and fight back against any attacker, including players. Golems marked as player-created, such as those from a statue or from a spawn with natural spawning disabled, do not attack players, but they still retaliate when hit.
A golem moves at a speed of 0.2 with a follow range of 16 blocks and a step height of 0.6 blocks, so it can walk up single-block ledges. Its attack damage depends on its subtype.
Normal
The normal subtype is the default and the only subtype a statue creates. It has an attack damage of 2 and no knockback resistance, and it uses melee attacks only.
Cactus
The cactus subtype has an attack damage of 6 and a knockback resistance of 1, which makes it hard to push back. It is melee-only. When it takes damage from a direct living attacker, that attacker takes 6 thorns damage. Thorns damage from other sources does not trigger the reflection, and projectiles do not trigger it either, because they are not living entities.
Dead bush
The dead bush subtype is the ranged variant. It has an attack damage of 4 and cannot melee. It shoots at targets within 15 blocks, with a 20-tick interval between shots and a 2-tick delay before each shot. Each shot is a mud ball, a thrown projectile that deals 4 damage on a direct hit to an entity. The mud ball is launched with a velocity of 1 and an inaccuracy of 5.
Changing subtype
A normal terracotta golem can be given a subtype by right-clicking it with an item. A cactus (any item in the cactus item tag) makes it a cactus golem, and a dead bush makes it a dead bush golem. Only normal golems accept this, so a golem that already has a subtype must be sheared before it can be changed.
Shearing a golem with a subtype using shears returns the equipped cactus or dead bush and resets the golem to the normal subtype. A normal golem cannot be sheared and is not affected.
Repair
A Terracotta Golem is repaired by right-clicking it with a clay ball. Each clay ball restores 4 health and uses one item.
Drops
A killed Terracotta Golem drops terracotta, from 0 to 2 blocks, and gives 6 experience points.
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Terracotta | x0.0-2.0 |
Tips
- Keep your distance from a dead bush golem. It cannot melee, so closing in only means taking shots until you reach it. Use a ranged weapon when you can.
- Avoid hitting a cactus golem with melee attacks unless you have health to spare. Each direct hit from a living attacker takes 6 thorns damage back, which is a large share of a player's health.
- Shear a subtyped golem to remove its cactus or dead bush and make it a normal golem again. The equipped item is returned to you.
- Repair a damaged golem with clay balls before a long fight, since each ball restores only 4 of its 30 health.
