Hay Golem is a passive golem added by Golem Overhaul. It is built from hay and wooden fences under a carved pumpkin, or it spawns in villages alongside the common iron golem template. It never attacks, and it has no natural biome spawns, so it is not a horror threat. Players mainly use it as a farm guardian, because it protects nearby farmland from trampling, and as a source of carved pumpkins through shearing.
Spawning
Hay Golems are not found in the wild. They appear in two situations: when a player builds one, and when a village places one.
Construction
A Hay Golem is built with the Golem Construction pattern. The carved pumpkin is placed on top of a hay block, with wooden fences on the left, right and below the hay block. The four corner spots of the pattern stay empty. The pattern is checked every time a carved pumpkin build attempt happens, so placing the pumpkin last completes the golem. The golem is green or red, chosen at random. Its colour is cosmetic.
The same pattern crafts a
Hay Golem Spawn Egg, which produces one egg per craft.
Village generation
When a village places the minecraft:village/common/iron_golem template, the game also tries to place a Hay Golem at the template's position. The attempt uses the same spawn checks as natural spawning and is controlled by the allowSpawning and spawnHayGolems config options, both of which default to enabled. Construction is not affected by these options.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Behavior
The Hay Golem has 40 health (20 hearts), a movement speed of 0.18 and a size of 0.75 × 2 blocks. It is a passive mob that wanders at random and turns to look at players within 6 blocks.
- No combat. The Hay Golem has no melee attack and no targeting goals, and it does not fight back when hit. Its listed attack damage of 3 has no effect.
- Ignored by golems. Iron golems, snow golems and other golems from this mod never target it.
- Farmland protection. Farmland cannot be trampled within 10 blocks of any Hay Golem. This applies to any entity, so farmland in that range stays intact even when stepped on.
- Repair. Right-clicking the golem with wheat heals 10 health (5 hearts) and consumes one wheat. The repair sound is the vine-break sound.
- Shearing. Shears can be used on a Hay Golem once. The golem drops one carved pumpkin and is marked as sheared. A sheared Hay Golem cannot be sheared again.
- Death. A Hay Golem plays its own hurt and death sounds. Killing one awards 8 experience.
Drops
A Hay Golem drops between 0 and 4 wheat on death, with the count rolled uniformly. The table below lists the drop as generated from the game data.
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Wheat | x0.0-4.0 |
Tips
- Build the golem next to farmland. The 10-block trampling protection covers the whole field, so the crops stay safe from careless feet.
- Keep wheat in your inventory. Each wheat restores 10 health to a damaged Hay Golem.
- Do not rely on a Hay Golem to defend you. It will not attack hostile mobs, so you must protect it from them.
- Shear the golem only when you need the carved pumpkin, because shearing can be done once.
