The Kelp Golem is a water-bound golem added by Golem Overhaul. It has 30 health, is classed as a creature, and has no natural spawns: players create it by building a pattern of dried kelp blocks and a sea lantern. Once built, it is a player-created ally that guards the area around it, attacks hostile monsters, and does not attack players.

Its main role is as a guardian for water-based builds. It moves most freely while it is in water, and it gains strong combat buffs whenever it is in water or rain inside an active conduit's range. Out of water it slowly loses air and takes damage, so it has to be kept near water.

Spawning

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

The Kelp Golem is never generated naturally. It has no biome spawn entries, does not appear in villages or structures, and has no spawn configuration option, because it cannot spawn naturally at all. Because it has no natural spawns, the pack's horror biome weighting does not change how often it appears.

It is created with the golem construction pattern shared by the other golems of the mod (see Golem Construction). The pattern uses three dried kelp blocks and one sea lantern:

  • The middle row is a dried kelp block, a sea lantern, and a dried kelp block, from left to right.
  • A third dried kelp block sits centred below the sea lantern.
  • The top row and the two bottom corners beside the lower kelp block must be air.

The pattern is matched in any horizontal orientation. When the final block of a matching pattern is placed, the mod checks for the pattern one tick later, and if it matches, the blocks are cleared and a Kelp Golem appears in the air above the sea lantern. Any player can trigger this, on any server level, so accidental placements can create a golem.

The Kelp Golem Spawn Egg is listed in the Golem Overhaul creative tab and stacks to 64.

Behavior

Movement. The Kelp Golem has two navigation modes. It uses water navigation when the block two above its position is water, and ground navigation otherwise. In water it swims with a custom move control that drifts it slightly upward when its target is above it, and it does not float at the surface. Outside water it walks at a movement speed of 0.085, which is slow. It also wanders, swims randomly while in water, and looks at nearby players.

Air. When the golem is not in water, its air supply drains. When the air runs out, it takes 2 damage from drowning. The damage then repeats about every 200 ticks (10 seconds) for as long as it stays out of water. Returning it to water refills the air supply.

Targeting. It scans for targets within its follow range of 16 blocks and requires line of sight. It targets hostile monsters, meaning mobs that count as enemies, such as zombies and skeletons. It never targets creepers, other golems, iron golems, snow golems, or players. Because it is always player-created, it also never attacks players.

Melee. Its attack deals 8 damage. The attack animation lasts 18 ticks, with a 6-tick delay before the hit. Its attack box is widened by 2 blocks on each horizontal axis.

Conduit Power. Every 60 ticks, the golem checks whether it has Conduit Power. A conduit applies Conduit Power to Kelp Golems within its range when they are in water or rain. While the check passes, the golem enters a charged state, shown by a spinning animation, and receives the following effects, each for 5 seconds (100 ticks) and refreshed on each check:

Repair. Right-clicking the golem with a kelp item heals it for 5 health and uses up one kelp.

Death. On death, the golem plays its own death sound and drops the items listed below, along with 14 experience points.

Drops

ItemAmountConditions
Kelpx1.0-3.0
Prismarine Crystalsx1.0-3.0

The golem has two separate loot pools, and each is rolled on death:

  • Kelp, 1 to 3
  • Prismarine Crystals, 1 to 3

Tips

  • Keep the golem in water whenever possible. Its air runs out outside water, and it then takes repeated drowning damage.
  • A conduit is the only source of the golem's buffs. Place the golem within the conduit's range and keep it in water or rain. Rain alone does not grant the buffs.
  • Kelp is the golem's repair item. Keep a stack of kelp on hand to top up its health after a fight, since each kelp heals 5 health.
  • Because the golem is player-created, it is safe to keep near a base or a water farm. It will not turn on the player, but it will attack hostile monsters that approach.
  • Before building the pattern near other kelp or sea lantern blocks, check the layout. Placing the final block of a matching pattern creates a golem immediately, and that can take blocks that were not meant for it.
