The Golem Overhaul mod adds nine new golem mobs to Minecraft 1.21.1 through NeoForge, each built or spawned in its own way and each with its own behaviour, from a passive Barrel Golem that trades items to a Netherite Golem that summons Coal Golems. Its build blocks and throwable items are small by comparison, but the mod also changes how existing mobs interact with golems. It is a content add-on rather than a worldgen mod: it adds no dimensions, no structures, no ores and no vanilla recipe changes.
In Fear Nightfall the mod is one of the sources of hostile mobs in the Overworld. Slime Golems join the Overworld monster pool, and several golems can appear in the horror biomes and village-style structures that the pack spreads across the map. Its effect on iron golems and bees is also visible in ordinary play, so players who know vanilla behaviour will notice the differences.
Overview
Golem Overhaul is a single mod with a shared base for its golems. Every golem extends the same base class, which gives it a GeckoLib animation, a melee goal, a repair item and a rule about which targets it attacks. The mod adds nine golem types, two build blocks, two throwable items and nine spawn eggs. It requires NeoForge, Architectury API, ResourcefulLib, ResourcefulConfig and GeckoLib. JEI and REI are optional recipe-viewer integrations.
Each golem appears in the world in one or more of these ways:
- Construction. The player builds it from blocks in a pattern, the way vanilla builds an Iron Golem. See Golem Construction.
- Natural spawning. The golem spawns in certain biomes or chunks, or in a village.
- Item or block use. The player turns a block into the golem, or throws, dispenses or summons it.
The golem list below gives the route or routes for each golem.
Content
The nine golems are listed below. Each has its own page with the stats, drops and behaviour in full.
- Barrel Golem: a passive golem that spawns only in villages. It never attacks, opens and closes on a timer, and barters items for emeralds.
- Candle Golem: a passive golem built from a Candle Golem Block. It fires flames when lit and can be made to sit still.
- Coal Golem: an ambient golem that lives in caves. It attacks only when lit, and it dies on contact while setting its target on fire. It is also sold as a throwable item.
- Hay Golem: a passive golem built from a carved pumpkin, or spawned in villages. It does not attack, and it keeps farmland from being trampled around it.
- Honey Golem: a passive golem that spawns in forests. It keeps bees, stores their honey, and shoots honey blobs.
- Kelp Golem: a water-bound golem built from dried kelp blocks and a sea lantern. It is powered by a Conduit.
- Netherite Golem: a large hostile-targeting golem built from ancient debris. It can be ridden, makes a jump attack, and summons Coal Golems.
- Slime Golem: a hostile golem that spawns in the Overworld and in slime chunks. It splits into smaller golems when it dies.
- Terracotta Golem: a golem made from a Clay Golem Statue. It spawns in badlands biomes and has three subtypes.
Two build blocks and two throwable items support these golems:
- Clay Golem Statue (
clay_golem_statue): a block made from two clay blocks and two clay balls. It turns into a Terracotta Golem when it receives a redstone signal, or on a random tick when its surroundings meet the block's light or temperature conditions. - Candle Golem Block (
candle_golem_block): a block made from six honeycomb and one string. It emits light when lit and is the trigger for a Candle Golem. - Coal Golem (item): a stack of 16 that can be thrown. Eight coal produce four of them. See
Coal Golem. - Honey Blob (item): a throwable item that fires the honey projectile used by the Honey Golem.
Each golem has a spawn egg. The mod places all of its items in a creative tab named Golem Overhaul.
The mod has no enchantments, status effects or damage types. Its advancements are recipe unlocks only.
Mechanics
Shared golem behaviour
Golems attack hostile mobs, which the mod defines as enemies, but not creepers. A golem that is hit by another golem of the mod targets its attacker. Golems do not attack other golems, iron golems or snow golems. A golem that is marked as player-created does not attack players. Repairs work the same way for every golem: the player right-clicks the golem holding the repair item, the golem heals by a fixed amount, and one item is used. The repair items and amounts are listed on each golem's page.
Targeting
The mod changes the way vanilla golems and mobs choose targets. Iron golems and snow golems cannot target any of this mod's golems. Hostile goals that normally target iron golems also fall back to this mod's golems, so hostile mobs can attack them.
Spawning
Natural spawns use Architectury biome modifiers. The mod adds the following:
- Coal Golem in cave biomes, at weight 20, in groups of three to five.
- Honey Golem in forest biomes, at weight 6, in groups of one or two.
- Slime Golem in every Overworld biome, at weight 25, in groups of one or two. It also adds weight 1 in swamps.
- Terracotta Golem in badlands biomes and in mineshaft structures in the badlands, at weight 6, in groups of one or two.
The other golems do not spawn in biomes. Barrel and Hay golems spawn in villages. Each golem also has a check of its own rules, such as the depth and surface requirements listed on its page.
Construction
Several golems are built with the same pattern-matching system that vanilla uses for iron golems. A carved pumpkin on top of the right blocks produces a Hay Golem or Netherite Golem. Dried kelp blocks around a sea lantern produce a Kelp Golem. The Candle Golem and Terracotta Golem are triggered by their blocks instead of patterns. All patterns are described on the Golem Construction page.
Throwing and dispensing
The Coal Golem item can be thrown by holding the right-click button and releasing it. Throwing more than one golem uses a power curve, and a lit golem is created when the player offhands flint and steel or a fire charge. A dispenser fires one Coal Golem. It is lit if the block it faces is fire.
Summoning
The Netherite Golem can summon Coal Golems while it has a target, and the player can make it do so while riding it. The summon key is bound to the period key in the pack. See Controls and Keybinds.
Changes to vanilla
The mod changes behaviour for bees in several ways:
- Every bee, including wild bees, gets two new goals that let it find and return to a Honey Golem.
- A wild bee within 128 blocks of a Honey Golem becomes owned by that golem.
- An owned bee does not enter its hive while its golem has a target. At night it may enter the hive while the golem exists.
- An owned bee deals six times its normal attack damage and does not die after stinging.
- Every bee saves the UUID of its golem owner.
Other changes to vanilla behaviour are:
- Piglins become angry at any visible netherite golem that is not gilded.
- Carved pumpkins try the Hay Golem and Netherite Golem patterns each time they are built, in addition to the iron golem check.
- Villages that use the vanilla iron golem template also try to spawn a Barrel Golem and a Hay Golem.
- Farmland does not trample within 10 blocks of a Hay Golem.
- Shears interact with the mod's golems only. Shearing a Hay Golem returns a carved pumpkin, shearing a Honey Golem at honey level 4 or more produces honey blobs and honeycomb, and shearing a Netherite Golem removes its gilding.
- Placing a dried kelp block or a sea lantern in the world can build a Kelp Golem.
- Conduits give Kelp Golems in water or rain the Conduit Power effects.
- Netherite Golems ignore projectiles, cactus damage and indirect magic damage.
- The mod adds Netherite Golems to the vanilla fall-damage-immune entity tag.
The mod does not change any vanilla loot table, recipe or advancement. Its loot tables and recipes all live under its own namespace.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack keeps all of the mod's spawn switches on: the master switch for natural and village spawns, and the per-golem switches for the Barrel, Coal, Hay, Honey, Slime and Terracotta golems. The mod's defaults are the same, so the pack's configuration is the default configuration.
The pack has made two changes to the mod's bee behaviour. Honey Golems used to keep the bees they had released after they died, and they used to take any bee within 128 blocks as their own. The pack has patched both behaviours, so released bees are no longer owned by a dead golem.
The mod's default key for summoning a Netherite Golem is R. The pack moved it to the period key to resolve a key conflict with another mod. The change is in the pack's default keybinds, so players who keep the defaults will find the summon key on period. See Controls and Keybinds.
The Slime Golem is part of the Overworld monster spawn pool at weight 25 in every Overworld biome. The Terracotta Golem spawns in badlands biomes, including the badlands biomes added by Terralith. The Honey Golem spawns in forest biomes, and the Coal Golem spawns in cave biomes, including the cave biomes added by Terralith when that mod's cave tags are present.
