The Savanna Badlands is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. It combines the open, grassy ground of a savanna with the terracotta of a badlands, so the surface is patched with terracotta blobs and savanna grass rather than the bare red sand of a vanilla badlands. It is one of the rarest biomes in the pack, and its hostile spawn table is one of the largest in Fear Nightfall, so it is a dangerous place to be after dark.
The biome has no precipitation, so it never rains or snows there. Its sky, fog and water colours are pale blue, with the water a deep blue (water colour #4d76bc).
Description
The ground is built from terracotta in bands and blobs. Terralith's terracotta feature places blobs of terracotta with white terracotta cores, and grass patches sit on grass blocks mixed with granite and gravel. Between these patches the land is open and sparsely covered, with savanna trees, tall grass and flowers scattered over the ground.
Vegetation follows the savanna side of the biome. Savanna trees, tall grass, warm-climate flowers, glow lichen, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane and pumpkin patches all generate here. Pumpkin patches matter for the pack, because several pumpkin-themed horror mobs spawn in this biome (see below).
Water is sparse. The biome has spring water and spring lava sources in the ground, and it has underwater magma, so caves and lakes can contain lava as well as water. Under the surface there are also lava lakes, both underground and at the surface. The biome plays the ambient cave sound about every five minutes.
Generation
The biome is warm (temperature 1) and dry (downfall 0). Terralith tags it as both savanna and badlands, so it can appear in both kinds of terrain. It is also in the stronghold-biased biome tag, which means strongholds are biased toward it during placement.
In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.24% of the surface land, which makes it one of the rarest biomes in the pack. Its cave share at the y=-30 level is about 0.04%. The pack's biome table gives each climate cell a set of eligible biomes that share the cell by weight. This biome is not one of the biomes given extra weight for the pack's horror theme, so its rarity comes from its place in the climate layout and not from a setting.
Features
- Terracotta and grass patches: the terracotta blobs and grass patches are the defining surface features. Their radii and placement come from Terralith.
- Ores: the biome has the full set of standard overworld ores: coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, along with granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, dirt and gravel veins. The diamond ores include the buried and large variants.
- Pack ores: Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite here. Butchery adds deepslate sulfur ore, salt disc generation and sulfur regeneration. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore. These are placed alongside the vanilla ores.
- Pack plants and decoration: Farmer's Delight places wild tomato patches, and Supplementaries places wild flax and cave urns. A Stony Cliffs cliff feature is also placed here.
- Water and lava: the spring water and spring lava sources are placed underground, and the biome has underwater magma. Lava lakes appear both underground and on the surface.
- Sand, clay and gravel: sand, clay and gravel disks are placed in the ground.

The tables above are generated from the game data. The monster table is the largest and most dangerous part of this biome, with 56 hostile monster types. Some notable hostile mobs here are the Dread Hound, which has a weight of 7, the Nightmare and Nightmare Stalker, the Necromancer (weight 18), the Skeleton Creeper (weight 20), the Corpse Fish in water, and the Bonescaller, Pumpkin Bruiser and Pumpkin Dunce from the pumpkin mobs. The weights are relative within each spawn group, so the most common hostiles are the vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, each with a weight of 95 or 100.
Passive animals (sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, llamas, wolves, armadillos, horses and donkeys) and bats also spawn here. Sheep have the highest creature weight at 12. Terracotta Golems spawn as a creature with a weight of 6.
The biome can contain 184 structures. Some notable ones are:
- the Clown Caravan, a Born in Chaos structure that also generates in plains and taiga;
- the Firewell, a Born in Chaos structure that is placed using the stronghold-biased biome tag;
- the Catacombs, an Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks structure;
- the CTOV mesa and savanna village variants;
- several cabins, towers, castle ruins and camps from the Terralith and Nova Structures sets.
In the pack, the horror structures from Born in Chaos are placed about 30% closer together than their default spacing, so they appear more often than in a vanilla setup.
Tips
- Arrive with full health and a light source. The spawn table has 56 hostile types, so the biome is busy at night.
- Expect lava. The biome has both underground and surface lava lakes, and spring lava. Check the ground before walking onto open terrain in the dark.
- Use the terracotta patches as landmarks. They are the most distinctive surface feature and make it easier to find your way back to a camp.
- Look for the pack ores here. Infected diamond ore and mithril ore are placed in this biome, so it is worth a search for players who want those materials.
- Because the biome is rare, plan a route through it rather than expecting to find it near spawn.
