Sandstone Valley is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. Its ground is sand and sandstone, cut by canyons and dotted with shallow lakes. It covers about 0.12% of land in Fear Nightfall, so it is uncommon and usually found by travelling away from spawn.
The biome has one of the longest monster spawn lists in the pack. It mixes vanilla desert mobs with Born in Chaos and Graveyard monsters, and night is the main danger here. Sandstone Valley is not on the pack's list of biomes weighted 6× for horror.
Description
Sandstone Valley is a canyon biome. The canyon carver cuts deep, winding gorges into the sandstone terrain, and the canyon walls are built from sandstone and smooth sandstone columns. Sand covers much of the floor and the ground around the lakes.
The lakes are shallow basins of water with sand banks. Patches of clay, moss block and moss carpet sit on the sand and sandstone, and small dripleaf plants grow along the water edges.
Palm trees are the only trees in the biome. Palms of several sizes grow across the valley floor, and medium palms stand on moss blocks over rooted dirt and may have vines hanging from their leaves.
The biome colours are unlike a typical desert. Grass is green (#77b338), foliage is a slightly bluer green (#4eb338), and the fog and sky are pale blue (#cde6ff and #b1d1ff). Water is teal. The biome has no rain or snow. It uses the desert music track and the cave ambient sound.
Generation
Sandstone Valley is a hot biome with a temperature of 2 and a downfall of 0, so it has no precipitation. It makes up about 0.12% of land in Fear Nightfall. It can spawn structures from several mods (see below).
Features
Sandstone Valley has no unique trees beyond its palms. It has a short list of plants and ore placements:
- Plants: cactus patches, dead bushes, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, and grass patches.
- Ores: the standard overworld ores (copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, and diamond). Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks also generates here (see Mithril). Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite. Butchery adds sulfur ore in deepslate.
- Terrain: sandstone patches replace stone underground, and the canyon carver shapes the valley floor.
Mobs and structures
Sandstone Valley's monster spawns are led by the vanilla desert-and-cave mobs: Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime, each with a weight of 100, and Husk with a weight of 80. The table below lists the full spawn and structure data, including the Born in Chaos and Graveyard monsters with weights from 1 to 20. The weight is the chance of that mob being picked in a spawn attempt relative to the others, so a low-weight monster is rare on any given night.

Among the notable horror monsters in this biome are the Dread Hound (weight 7), the Nightmare (weight 7), the Bonescaller (weight 5), the Spirit of Chaos (weight 4), and the Krampus (weight 1). The Skeleton Creeper (weight 20) is a Graveyard mob with a higher weight than the other horror monsters named here.
Peaceful and ambient spawns are sparse. Rabbits and camels spawn on land, bats spawn in the air, and glow squid spawn underground in water. Corpse fish and other water mobs spawn in the lakes.
The biome can generate 167 structures from several mods. Terralith's Desert Outpost and fortified desert villages appear here. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds catacombs and evoker forts, and Nova Structures adds illager hideouts and bunkers.
Tips
- Plan trips through Sandstone Valley for daylight. Night spawns include the dangerous horror monsters listed above, and the biome's large monster list makes the valley more dangerous after dark.
- Cactus patches hurt players who walk into them. Stay on sand paths or go around them.
- Mithril ore generates here, so the biome is a useful place to look for it when no other source is nearby.
