The Scarlet Mountains is a cold mountain biome added by Terralith. Its ground mixes crimson nylium with patches of snow, and its grass and fog are tinted dark red and grey, so the snowy peaks stand out against a red-tinted landscape. It is very rare in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.02% of the land surface, so most players will find it only by exploring far from their starting area.

The biome is not weighted for horror by the pack, but its monster list is full of the pack's horror mobs, such as Revenant, Necromancer and Nightmare. Players crossing it at night should expect hostile mobs from many mods at once.

Description

The biome is made of steep mountain terrain. Crimson nylium forms part of the ground, and snow blocks are placed over it in patches. The biome also places patches of snow over stone, replacing netherrack, blackstone and deepslate with snow blocks at chances of 40%, 40%, 50% and 60% in each patch. The result is bare red ground and white snow mixed on the same slopes.

Scattered crimson roots grow on the surface, with twelve placement attempts per chunk. Snow layers are thinned by two removal passes, so some slopes are left bare. The grass is dark red (#901222). Water is blue (#3F76E4), the fog is pale grey (#D7D8E1), and the sky is a muted blue-grey (#A5B0BD).

The biome plays the underground ambient cave sound about every five minutes, and it uses the stony peaks music track with a pause of 12000 to 24000 ticks between tracks.

Generation

Scarlet Mountains has a temperature of 0.1 and a downfall of 0.4, and it has precipitation that falls as snow. Terralith tags the biome as a mountain, a snowy biome and a mountain peak, so mods that check those tags can also place structures and mobs here.

The biome is one of Terralith's rarest. Its share of land is about 0.02%, which makes it a small pocket in most worlds. It uses the standard cave, deep cave and canyon carvers, so canyons can cut through the ground and open into underground caves.

The pack's spookier-world changes did not add this biome to the list of 6× horror biomes. Horror in this biome comes from its own spawn list and from structures that the pack's shared sets place here. Up to 189 structures can generate here, drawn from the mods listed below. Villages come from the pack's shared village set, so vanilla, Luki's, CTOV, Towns and Towers, D&T, Villages and Pillages and Terralith fortified villages can all appear here.

Features

  • Ores: the biome has the usual stone-layer ores, including coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond. Diamond has four placements: a standard set, a medium vein, a large vein and a buried vein. Infested stone is also placed here.
  • Mod ores: Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is placed in this biome. Born in Chaos adds black argillite and infected diamond ore in both stone and deepslate. Butchery adds sulfur ore in deepslate and a salt disk generation.
  • Liquids: lava lakes appear both underground and on the surface. Spring water and spring lava appear in the stone, and underwater magma is placed in the water.
  • Caves and dungeons: amethyst geodes, and monster rooms in the shallow and deep stone. Monster rooms contain a spawner and chests.
  • Plants: glow lichen grows on the stone, crimson roots grow on the surface, and wild potatoes from Farmer's Delight appear in patches. Wild flax from Supplementaries and cave urns from Supplementaries are also placed here.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables below are generated from the biome. Spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes are the most common monsters, followed by zombies. Horror mobs make up a large share of the rest of the monster list. Revenant, Slime Golem, Skeleton Creeper and Necromancer are regular spawns. Nightmare, Dread Hound, Krampus and the rarer Mutant Skeleton, Mutant Creeper, Mutant Zombie and Mutant Enderman are rare.

The biome has aquatic spawns. Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish spawn in open water, and Shima Enaga spawns on land. Glow squid spawn in underground water.

Notable structures include the Catacombs and Evoker Fort from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, the Firewell from Born in Chaos, the Glacial Hut and Igloo from Terralith, and the vanilla igloo. Nova Structures' bunker and Structory Towers' ancient temple also generate here.

Tips

  • Carry a strong weapon and light source before crossing this biome at night. Hostile mobs from several mods spawn here, and the rarest ones can be dangerous to a low-level character.
  • Lava lakes appear on the surface as well as underground. Look at the ground before walking off a ledge in the dark.
  • The monster rooms in the stone are small dungeons with a spawner and chests. Clear them with care, because the spawner keeps producing mobs while it is active.
