Deep Caves is an underground biome added by Terralith. It is a dark, damp cave biome with one of the longest hostile spawn tables in Fear Nightfall. Players mining for ores or searching for cave structures will meet it often, and it is one of the places where the pack's horror mobs from Born in Chaos appear underground.

The biome has a near-black fog, a dark blue-grey sky colour and deep blue water. Ambient cave sounds play regularly, and the biome can rain.

Description

Deep Caves is a cave biome with lakes of water and lava, glow lichen on its cave walls and a freeze top layer feature. Spring water and spring lava sources appear in the stone, so pools form in unexpected places. Underground water in the biome holds its own set of fish and water-dwelling mobs.

The biome uses a dark colour palette: a fog colour of #101419, a sky colour of #1F242D and water of #3F76E4. Its mood sound is the standard cave ambience, which can play every 6000 ticks when the player is within 8 blocks of the biome's blocks.

Generation

Deep Caves is a cave biome in the Terralith climate system. It has a temperature of 0.6 and a downfall of 0.3, and it uses rain as its precipitation. In Fear Nightfall it covers 7.58% of the cave layer at y=-30.

The pack's horror weighting does not cover Deep Caves. The 6× cave weights in the pack's changes apply to Infested Caves and Frostfire Caves, and Deep Caves is not on that list. The biome still holds many horror mobs in its spawn table, so it is dangerous at any time of day.

Deep Caves can hold 105 structures in Fear Nightfall. They come from several mods, including Terralith, Mutant Monsters, Dungeons and Taverns, Graveyard, Born in Chaos, Nova Structures and Stony Cliffs. The structure table below lists the full set.

Features

Deep Caves uses the standard vanilla ore set and adds several modded ores. Vanilla ores include coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond (including buried, medium and large diamond clusters), and gravel, dirt, tuff, granite, diorite and andesite patches. The pack adds Born in Chaos black argillite and infected diamond ore, Butchery sulfur ore, and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks mithril ore. See Ores and Mining for the full list of ores in the pack.

Other features include:

  • Amethyst geodes, lava lakes and vanilla monster rooms (both the standard and the deep variant).
  • Wild carrot and wild onion patches from Farmer's Delight, and wild flax from Supplementaries.
  • Cave urns from Supplementaries.
  • Cliff features from Stony Cliffs Are Cool.
  • Spring water and spring lava sources.
  • Glow lichen on cave walls and a freeze top layer feature.

Mobs and structures

Deep Caves has 54 hostile mob types in its monster list. The most heavily weighted are the vanilla cave mobs (spider, skeleton, creeper and slime, each with a weight of 100, and zombie with a weight of 95). The rest of the list comes mainly from Born in Chaos, Mutant Monsters, Graveyard, Golem Overhaul and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Notable examples include Dread Hound, Dark Vortex, Krampus, Necromancer, Mutant Creeper and Mutant Zombie. Slime Golem also spawns in the monster list. Coal Golem spawns as an ambient mob.

Water in the biome has its own spawn tables. Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish spawn as water creatures, and glow squid spawn in underground water. The ambient water list includes a range of fish types.

The tables below list the spawns and structures generated for this biome.

Tips

  • Bring a light source before entering. Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, and the biome is dark, so torches or lanterns are necessary for safe travel.
  • The monster list is long and includes mobs with dangerous attacks. Fight in narrow tunnels so that fewer mobs can reach you at once, and keep an escape route open.
  • Check water pools before swimming through them, since water creatures spawn in the biome's underground water.
  • Diamond ore is common here, including the pack's infected diamond ore. Mining deep in the biome is productive, but lava lakes are common, so check the area before digging into open space.
