The Alpine Grove is a cold, snowy biome added by Terralith. It is tagged as a mountain and mountain-slope biome with dense vegetation, and it has snowfall with a temperature of -0.2. In Fear Nightfall its monster spawn list mixes the vanilla overworld monsters with horror mobs from Born in Chaos, the Graveyard mod and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, so it is a dangerous biome to cross at night.

Description

The Alpine Grove has a sky colour of #a5b0bd and a fog colour of #d7d8e1, so the air looks pale grey-blue and distant terrain fades quickly. Its water colour is #3938c9, a deep blue. The biome plays the vanilla grove music and uses the vanilla cave mood sound with a tick delay of 6000.

The ground is covered in snow. Terralith's snowy layer features and its grass and snow fix place snow over the surface blocks of the biome. The trees come from a tree feature that picks tiny pine trees 80% of the time and tiny spruce trees 20% of the time. Sugar cane and pumpkin patches are placed as plant features, and the Supplementaries wild flax is added as well.

Generation

The Alpine Grove generates in cold, humid, mountainous climates. It is picked by any feature that asks for mountains or cold forests. In Fear Nightfall's biome table it covers about 0.07% of the land surface. It sits among several other Terralith mountain and snowy biomes, which are themselves part of the mod's share of about 31% of land in the pack.

The pack does not weight the Alpine Grove as a horror biome. It is not on the list of biomes that Fear Nightfall weights at 6×, so its horror content comes from the mod tags that add mobs to the biome. The Graveyard mod adds the Ghoul, Revenant and Nightmare through its ghoul and nightmare spawn tags. Born in Chaos adds the Dread Hound, Krampus and other mobs. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds the Necromancer.

Features

The biome adds the following features beyond the vanilla overworld set:

  • Ores: the vanilla overworld ores, including coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, emerald and diamond. Diamond ore is placed in four ways: normal, buried, medium and large. The biome also places the infested stone ore.
  • Mod ores: Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and infected deepslate diamond ore. Butchery adds sulfur ore in deepslate, and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds Mithril ore. Butchery's salt disc generation and sulfur regeneration features are also placed here.
  • Terrain layers: the granite, diorite, andesite, dirt, gravel and tuff ore-vein layers from the vanilla stone set, and black argillite from Born in Chaos.
  • Plants and decoration: sugar cane and pumpkin patches, wild flax, and cave urns from Supplementaries.
  • Cliffs: the cliff feature from Stony Cliffs Are Cool.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables below list every monster, animal and water creature the biome can spawn, with its relative weight. Among the monsters the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper and slime have weight 100 each, and the zombie has 95. The horror mobs follow. The Ghoul and Revenant have weight 25 each. Necromancer has weight 18, Nightmare and Dread Hound have weight 7 each, and Krampus has weight 1.

The animals are sheep (12), pigs (10), chickens (10), cows (8), wolves (8), foxes (8), rabbits (4) and Shima Enaga (3). Bats spawn as ambient mobs, and glow squid spawn in underground water. The water creatures are Corpse Fish (weight 3) and Glutton Fish (weight 1), along with a long list of ambient fish. The fish with the highest weights are the Bluegill and Perch at 20 each.

The biome allows 221 structures, drawn from many mods. Villages and outposts from Luki's Grand Capitals, Towns and Towers and CTOV can generate here, along with the Terralith Spire and the Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. The horror-set structures in its list include the Graveyard's dead trees and ruins, the Firewell and the Clown Caravan from Born in Chaos. Fear Nightfall places horror structures about 30% closer together than other structures, so they appear more often than the normal spacing would allow. The placement table below lists every structure the biome can generate.

Tips

  • Carry light and a melee weapon before dark. Monster spawns here include the horror mobs listed above.
  • The Ghoul and Revenant are neutral until they are angered, so they can be avoided if the player does not attack them first.
  • The diamond, emerald and Mithril ore features are all placed in this biome's stone, so it is a source of those ores.
