The Fractured Savanna is a warm, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a hilly variant of the savanna, with broken, uneven ground and sparse, tall savanna trees. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the rarest biomes in the pack, and it is also one of the places where the pack's horror mobs can appear. Players who want to find it should use Nature's Compass, since it is unlikely to turn up during ordinary exploration.

Description

The biome is hot and completely dry. Its downfall value is 0 and it has no precipitation, so it never rains or snows. Its colours are dusty and muted: the foliage is a dry brown-olive (#9e814d), the fog is pale beige (#e2d7c3), the sky is a washed-out tan (#e2d3b3), and the water is a murky brown (#927c66). The overall effect is a bleached, dusty landscape with little colour.

The terrain is shaped by Terralith's shattered-savanna features. Several sizes of savanna trees are placed side by side, along with tall grass, patches of grass, and short "teeth" rock formations. Flowers are the warm variety, and mushrooms and glow lichen appear in small numbers. Sugar cane and pumpkin patches also grow here, which makes the biome useful for food and for pumpkin supplies, but these patches are scattered and do not cover large areas.

Because it is tagged as a hill biome and shares tags with windswept biomes, the ground rises and falls more than in a standard savanna.

Generation

The biome belongs to Terralith's warm, lukewarm reference group, and it borders other savanna and hill biomes in the pack's biome layout. Fear Nightfall's custom biome source gives every eligible biome a share of each climate cell by weight. Fractured Savanna has a very low weight, so it covers only about 0.08% of the land surface. Players are unlikely to meet it by chance over a short trip.

The biome is not one of the pack's six-times-weighted horror biomes, so it does not receive extra weight. The horror content in its mob list comes from mods that add monsters to every biome, not from a biome-specific boost.

Features

The biome's placed features are a mix of vanilla and mod-added content:

  • Trees and plants: Savanna trees in tall, medium, small and tiny sizes from Terralith, plus the vanilla savanna trees, tall grass, grass patches, warm flowers, sugar cane, pumpkins, and small brown and red mushrooms.
  • Ore: Vanilla ores are generated at every standard height band, including extra diamond veins. Pack mods add their own ores here: Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, Sulfur ore from Butchery, and extra diamond ore from Born in Chaos. Black Argillite, the Born in Chaos building stone, is also placed as a feature.
  • Caves: Lava lakes, a monster room, and an amethyst geode can appear underground. Monster rooms are generated underground as well.
  • Surface: Gravel and sand discs and a small amount of extra gravel. Underwater magma also appears in the biome's water.
  • Structures: The biome has 168 possible structures. Many come from the pack's horror mods, including Born in Chaos's Clown Caravan and Infernal Pumpkin Patch, Dungeons and Taverns outposts, camps and crypts, and Nova Structures' Firewatch Towers and illager camps. The structure table below shows the full list.

Mobs and structures

Fractured Savanna's monster list starts with the usual vanilla mobs: spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes, and zombies. Many horror mobs follow, including Dread Hounds, Nightmares, Necromancers, Pumpkin Dunces, Mutant Creepers and Mutant Zombies. The horror mobs are spread across the monster pool. Their weights are much lower than the vanilla ones, so vanilla mobs make up most of the spawns, but a horror mob is likely to appear on any longer walk. Monster spawns are in the table below. Passive mobs are sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, armadillos, wolves, horses and donkeys. Wolves here use the spotted variant. Frogs spawn with the warm variant. Bats are ambient mobs, and glow squids and fish live in the biome's water.

The biome has 168 possible structures, and the table below shows the structures, their biome spawn data, and their chest loot. Because the list is long, use it to plan routes rather than to check every entry.

Tips

  • Use Nature's Compass to find this biome. Its rarity makes random exploration a poor way to find it.
  • Bring light and a full set of torches before you travel here at night. The monster list is dense, and horror mobs such as Dread Hounds and Nightmares can appear in groups.
  • The uneven hills break up sight lines, so check around a ridge before you cross it.
  • The biome has no rain or snow, so it offers no weather cover. Carry water before you go deep into the biome.
  • Check the structure list before you explore. Many structures are horror sites with dangerous mobs and loot that is worth the risk.
