Alpine Highlands is a cold, rainy overworld biome added by Terralith. It is an open, grassy region with stone features and scattered pine trees, and it has a full hostile mob spawn list. It is rare in Fear Nightfall, so most players will find it only when exploring unfamiliar land or when searching for ore on higher ground.

Its climate values are a temperature of 0.45 and a downfall of 0.1, so it rains rather than snows. Terralith tags the biome as cold, and it is also tagged as plains, which affects which other mods' spawns and structures can use it.

Description

The biome's ground is covered in short grass and ferns, with bushes and grass patches spread across it. Pine and spruce-style pine trees grow among the bushes, but they are less common than the bushes. Lichen and vines grow on stone, and stone pillar formations stand as terrain features.

Water is a deep blue (#3F76E4) and fog is a pale blue-white (#C0D8FF). The sky is a clear blue (#78A7FF). The biome's ambient cave sound plays every 6000 ticks (five minutes), which gives it a quiet feel.

Each bush placement rolls a pine with 12% chance, a spruce-style pine with 8% chance, a medium bush with 70% chance, and a small bush with the remaining 10%. The result is mostly bushes, with pine trees as occasional clusters.

Generation

Alpine Highlands is a rare biome in Fear Nightfall. It makes up 0.63% of land surface, and only 0.01% of the cave layer at y = -30. It uses Terralith's cave, deep cave and canyon carvers, so canyons can cut through its ground.

The biome is not one of the pack's 6× horror-weighted biomes, so it does not gain extra horror content from the spookier-world changes. Its hostile mobs come from its own spawn list. The biome carries Graveyard's nightmare and skeleton-creeper spawn tags, which allow Nightmare and Revenant spawns, and Dread Hound from Born in Chaos is also in its monster table.

Features

The biome's placed features are these.

  • Trees: pine and spruce-style pine trees, placed through the bush roll described above.
  • Bushes and grass: small and medium bushes, short grass and fern patches, and an extra grass pass.
  • Stone and climbing plants: stone pillar formations, lichen on stone walls and floors, and vines.
  • Gravel and cliffs: gravel disks, and canyon cliff grass.
  • Ores: coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis lazuli, redstone and diamond, with several diamond placements including buried and large veins. Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is placed here, and Born in Chaos adds an infected diamond ore.
  • Plants: wild carrots and wild onions from Farmer's Delight, wild flax from Supplementaries, and sugar cane, pumpkin and berry patches from vanilla.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables below show weights for the biome. The most common monsters are spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes, each at weight 100, with zombies at 95. Horror mobs appear at lower weights: Revenant (25), Necromancer (18) and Slime Golem (25) are regular spawns, while Nightmare and Dread Hound are rare at weight 7.

Passive mobs are sheep (12), pigs (10), chickens (10) and cows (8). Horses, wolves and ferrets appear less often. Water spawns include small fish such as bluegill and perch, and glow squid appear in underground water.

The biome can generate 190 structures. Several come from horror-themed mods, including Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, Evoker Fort, and Dark Tower from Born in Chaos. Terralith's fortified villages can also generate here.

Tips

  • Watch for Nightmare and Dread Hound at night. They are rare, but they are part of the biome's monster table.
  • Bring a light source for caves. The cave layer here is very small, so underground travel is uncommon.
  • Diamond, iron and lapis are all placed here, including buried and large diamond veins, so the biome is useful for mining.
  • Pine trees are less common than bushes, so bring wood from elsewhere if you plan to build here.
