The Ice Marsh is a cold, wet biome added by Terralith. It combines a swamp's water, mangrove-type trees and dark ground with a snowy climate, so snow falls on the marsh instead of rain. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the rarer biomes on the map, and its monster spawns are weighted heavily toward the pack's horror mobs, so a player crossing it at night should expect a steady stream of hostile spawns.

Description

The Ice Marsh is a low, waterlogged basin. The ground is mostly grass block, with patches of gray concrete, mud and podzol that give the surface a dark, uneven look. Shallow water and water lilies fill low areas, and dead bushes grow on drier patches. The water, grass and foliage colours follow the swamp palette, but the air is cold: the temperature is 0.14, so precipitation is snow.

Trees are mangrove-type, with mangrove logs and mangrove leaves. Most use jungle-style foliage, and some of the smaller trees have pine-shaped foliage instead. Vines hang from some trunks. Glow lichen, swamp flowers, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane and pumpkin patches are scattered across the surface.

The biome plays the swamp music track, and its mood sound is the cave ambience. The fog and sky are pale grey-blue, which makes the marsh feel colder and more overcast than a normal swamp.

Generation

The Ice Marsh is a cold, very humid biome. Its temperature (0.14) and downfall (0.9) place it in cold, wet climate cells, and it is tagged as both icy and wet. In Fear Nightfall the pack's custom biome table decides which biome fills each cell, and biomes of the same type sit next to each other. The Ice Marsh therefore borders other cold and swamp-type biomes.

The biome covers about 0.21% of the land surface, one of the smallest shares of any biome in the pack. It is not one of the biomes given 6× horror weight in the pack's biome table. Its monster spawns are still weighted toward horror mobs (see below), and the pack's horror structures are concentrated in humid swamp-type areas.

Features

The Ice Marsh has a set of terrain features that are not found in most swamps.

  • Lava lakes: lava lakes can be placed both on the surface and underground. This is unusual for a cold biome, so lava can appear on the same marsh as snow.
  • Ores: the standard overworld ore set is placed here, including coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond in its normal, medium, large and buried forms. The pack's mods add Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, Black Argillite and infected deepslate diamond ore from Born in Chaos, and deepslate Sulfur ore from Butchery.
  • Springs, geodes and clay: spring water, spring lava, amethyst geodes and clay disks are generated in the biome.
  • Fossils and monster rooms: upper and lower fossils appear in the terrain, along with standard and deep monster rooms (dungeons with spawners).
  • Snow: snow falls on the biome, so snow layers form on exposed surfaces.
  • Water life: the marsh's water is populated by fish from the pack's fishing and aquaculture mods, and Corpse Fish from Born in Chaos.

Mobs and structures

The generated table below lists the biome's monster, creature, ambient and water spawns. The monster list is led by vanilla zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers and slimes, and it includes a large number of pack mobs.

The most dangerous of these include:

Frogs spawn here as the cold variant, and white rabbits also appear. Glow squid spawn in underground water.

The biome also generates structures from several mods. The Ice Spider Den and the Impaled Icebreaker from Iron's Spells, and igloos from the vanilla set and the pack's village mods, are cold-climate sites. Graveyard structures such as the Altar (The Graveyard) also generate here, so one marsh can hold several different hostile sites.

Tips

  • Carry a light source and a sword or ranged weapon through the marsh after dark. Monsters spawn in large numbers, and visibility is poor between the trees.
  • Watch for surface lava lakes, especially close to snowfields.
  • Monster rooms contain spawners, so approach them with a full health bar and a clear escape route.
  • The mangrove-type trees drop mangrove wood. Monsters spawn in darkness, so gather wood and do other work on the marsh in daylight.
