The Mutant Creeper is a hostile boss-like creeper added by Mutant Monsters. It has 120 health (60 hearts). Unlike a vanilla creeper, it hunts players, leaps at them, charges at them, summons smaller tamable creepers to fight beside it, and explodes when it dies. It spawns naturally in every biome where vanilla creepers can spawn, so players meet it in the pack's dark, horror-themed biomes as well as in ordinary terrain.

Its explosions do not hurt it. Any explosion that reaches it heals it instead, so explosives are a poor choice against it. Its behaviour changes when it is low on health or struck by lightning, and its death is a large explosion that pulls nearby entities toward it first.

Killing a Mutant Creeper with a player can leave a Creeper Minion Egg behind, which hatches into a tamable companion.

Spawning

Mutant Creepers spawn naturally in the Monster category. They are added to the monster spawn list of every biome that has a vanilla creeper spawn entry, which is 277 biomes in this pack. In each of these biomes the spawn weight is 0.05 times the vanilla creeper weight, with a minimum of 1, so a biome where vanilla creepers have weight 100 gives the Mutant Creeper weight 5. The weights per biome are listed in the table below.

  • Group size: always 1. Mutant Creepers never spawn in groups.
  • Monster cap: a Mutant Creeper counts toward the monster cap and competes with vanilla zombies, skeletons, creepers and endermen for the same slots. The pack already halved the spawn weights of Born in Chaos mobs because they crowded vanilla monsters out of the cap, so the Mutant Creeper shares the slots that remain.
  • Time and light: spawning follows the normal rules for hostile mobs, so it appears in darkness and at night.
  • Lightning: a thunderstorm can turn an existing Mutant Creeper into a charged one (see Behavior).

Behavior

Movement and targeting

The Mutant Creeper has 120 health, a melee attack of 5 damage, a movement speed of 0.26 and a follow range of 16 blocks. It is immune to knockback. It targets the nearest player and also targets cats and ocelots. It keeps attacking a player it has lost sight of for up to 200 ticks. Each melee hit knocks the target back. Cats and ocelots run away from it.

Jump attack

When it has a target within 32 blocks and is standing on the ground, it has a 0.9% chance per tick to leap toward the target. The leap explodes on landing. When it touches the ground or lands in a fluid, it explodes with a radius of 4 blocks, or 6 blocks if it is charged. The explosion damages blocks only when mobGriefing is enabled.

Charge

A charge starts when all of these are true:

  • its target is between 5 and 32 blocks away;
  • it has lost at least 20 health, so it is at 100 health or less;
  • a random roll at 70% succeeds.

While charging it stands still and runs for up to 100 ticks (5 seconds). Each damaging hit it takes during the charge reduces a counter that starts at 3 to 5 hits. When the counter reaches zero the charge ends. Each melee attacker takes 2 thorns damage during the charge. Ranged attacks do not trigger thorns. After each charge the counter is reset to 4 to 6 hits.

A charge that runs its full 100 ticks heals the Mutant Creeper by 30 health. When a charge starts, there is a 1 in 6 chance to summon lightning, or 1 in 2 during a thunderstorm, as long as it is not already charged. If the target is within 5 blocks and the sky is open above the Mutant Creeper when the charge ends, a lightning bolt strikes at its position instead, and the charge does not heal it.

Charged state

A Mutant Creeper becomes charged when lightning strikes it. A charged Mutant Creeper:

  • is immune to fire;
  • makes its jump explosion radius 6 instead of 4;
  • makes its death explosion power 12 instead of 8;
  • summons charged Creeper Minions.

Minion summoning

When it has a target within 32 blocks and is not charging or jumping, it has a 90% chance per check to summon Creeper Minions. The chance drops to 60% while it is moving along a path and its last damage was not from a projectile. The number of minions is its health fraction times 4, rounded up, so it summons 4 at full health and fewer as it is damaged. The minions appear around it, are aimed at its target and are owned by it.

Explosions and healing

Explosion damage does not hurt a Mutant Creeper. Instead it heals the Mutant Creeper by half of that damage, up to its maximum health. Explosions caused by its own jumps and deaths do not heal it. Creeper explosions, TNT, Creeper Shard explosions and any other explosion all count.

The Mutant Creeper is immune to fire only while charged.

Death

When it dies, it does not disappear at once. For 100 ticks (5 seconds) it pulls nearby entities toward itself, within a radius of 12 blocks, or 18 blocks if it is charged. The pull grows stronger over the 5 seconds. At the end of the countdown it explodes with power 8, or 12 if charged. If a player killed it with mob loot enabled, a Creeper Minion Egg appears at its position.

Drops

The table below lists the Mutant Creeper's loot. The Creeper Minion Egg is not part of that table. It appears only when a player kills the Mutant Creeper with mob loot enabled, as described under Death.

Variants

The Mutant Creeper has a charged state, described above. Two related entities are tied to it.

Creeper Minion

The Creeper Minion is a tamable creeper with 4 health and a movement speed of 0.25. It can sit on its owner's shoulder. It swells when a target is within 3 blocks and visible, and its explosion has a radius of 4 blocks, or 6 blocks if it is charged. Creeper Minions can destroy blocks only if the owner enables that option in the Creeper Minion Tracker. They do not spawn naturally. They come from Mutant Creepers and from hatched eggs.

The Creeper Minion Tracker is a remote that controls tamed minions. It has these options: Blast Radius, Destroy Blocks, Explosion (Continuous or One-Time), Health, Ride On Shoulder and Always Show Name.

Creeper Minion Egg

A Creeper Minion Egg appears when a player kills a Mutant Creeper. It hatches into a tamed Creeper Minion after 60 to 99 minutes, chosen at random when the egg is created. The egg only hatches if it has an owner. If it is hurt, it explodes like TNT and breaks, and it may drop gunpowder or a Creeper Shard.

The Mutant Creeper Spawn Egg and the Creeper Minion Spawn Egg are the spawn eggs for this page. The Creeper Shard is used in the Creeper Minion Tracker recipe and in the Chemical X brewing recipe. Chemical X can also turn a vanilla creeper into a Mutant Creeper.

Tips

  • Do not use explosives against it. Every explosion heals it, and a Creeper Shard explosion heals it as well.
  • Use ranged weapons where possible. Each melee hit on it during a charge costs the attacker 2 health through thorns, while ranged attacks take no thorns damage.
  • Count its charge hits. Below 100 health it starts charging, and each damaging hit taken during the charge brings the charge closer to ending.
  • Step out of the way when it leaps. The landing explosion has a radius of 4 blocks, or 6 blocks when charged.
  • Keep your distance when it dies. For 5 seconds it pulls nearby entities toward itself, then it explodes with power 8, or 12 when charged.
  • If you want a Creeper Minion Egg, kill the Mutant Creeper yourself and keep the egg away from explosions and TNT, because hurting the egg breaks it.
  • Keep clear of it during thunderstorms. Lightning charges it, and its lightning strikes land at its position, so players close to it are at risk.
