The Spider Pig is a tamable, saddleable pig variant added by Mutant Monsters. It is a neutral mob with 40 health (20 hearts) that attacks spiders and pigs, leaps at nearby targets, and leaves cobwebs at the spot where it strikes. Those cobwebs can hold a player in place, and a wild Spider Pig will hunt pigs and spiders in its area.

It does not generate naturally in the world. A player obtains one from its spawn egg, by applying Chemical X to a pig that has Unluck, or by breeding tamed Spider Pigs. A tamed Spider Pig can also be saddled and ridden, and it jumps by charging forward.

Spawning

The mod adds no natural biome spawn entries for the Spider Pig, so it does not appear in the spawn table below. The table lists any structure or summon that places one.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Players obtain Spider Pigs in four ways:

  • Spawn egg. The Spider Pig Spawn Egg (Spider Pig Spawn Egg) summons a Spider Pig. The egg stacks to 64.
  • Chemical X conversion. Drinking or throwing a Chemical X potion spawns a Skull Spirit on each eligible mob. The spirit converts a pig into a Spider Pig with a 3/4 chance, but only if the pig has the Unluck effect. Unluck is applied by right-clicking a pig with a Fermented Spider Eye, which gives 600 ticks (30 seconds) of the effect and uses one item. Baby pigs are never converted. The pack uses the default conversion mapping, so minecraft:pig converts to mutantmonsters:spider_pig.
  • Breeding. Two Spider Pigs can be bred with carrots, potatoes, beetroot, porkchops or spider eyes. Each offspring is a plain pig with a 1 in 20 chance. Otherwise it is a Spider Pig tamed to the same owner as its parent.
  • Taming. A wild Spider Pig that kills a Creeper Minion owned by a player becomes tame to that player, and the minion is removed. If the taming event is cancelled, the minion survives.

A wild Spider Pig is removed when no player is near it, as with most mobs that are not persistent. A tamed Spider Pig stays in place.

Behavior

A Spider Pig's melee attack deals 3 damage, with a melee speed of 1.1 and a maximum attack timer of 16 ticks. When the target is standing inside a cobweb, the attack deals 4 extra damage, for a total of 7. Spiders and other Spider Pigs do not receive this bonus.

Each melee hit has a 50% chance to place a cobweb at the target's position, provided that the space is not solid, not liquid and not already a web. A placed web also raises the Spider Pig's vertical speed to at least 0.25 blocks per tick and resets its fall distance. A web lasts 1200 ticks (60 seconds), or 600 ticks (30 seconds) if the Spider Pig was charging when it placed it. A Spider Pig tracks up to 12 webs at once and removes the oldest when a thirteenth is added. All of its webs are removed when it dies. Placing and removing webs requires the mobGriefing game rule to be enabled.

The leap attack has a cooldown of 15 ticks. It starts when the target is within 8 blocks, with a 1 in 8 chance per check, or whenever the target is within 2.5 blocks. The leap launches the Spider Pig toward the target at a horizontal speed of 2.0 to 2.2. It ends once the Spider Pig has landed after its first 10 ticks, or after 40 ticks at most.

Targeting depends on the Spider Pig's state:

  • A tamed Spider Pig attacks whatever its owner attacks, and retaliates against any attacker.
  • A wild Spider Pig attacks spiders and pigs. When it is attacked, nearby Spider Pigs are alerted.
  • A Spider Pig that a player has hurt becomes angry at that player for 20 to 39 seconds.
  • A baby Spider Pig runs away when damaged rather than fighting.

A Spider Pig is immune to the Poison effect and to fall damage. It can climb walls. It belongs to the arthropod tag, so effects such as Bane of Arthropods apply to it.

Tamed Spider Pigs heal 1 health every 600 ticks (30 seconds). A player can also feed a Spider Pig food items from the breeding list to heal it by the item's food value.

Riding

A saddle can be placed on a tamed adult Spider Pig, and the saddle drops when the Spider Pig dies. A saddled Spider Pig can be ridden. It cannot jump while it is pressed against a wall or while it is exhausted.

Jumping charges the Spider Pig. Each jump adds exhaustion equal to half the jump's power percentage, which is 50 at full power. Once exhaustion reaches 120, the Spider Pig cannot jump until exhaustion falls back to zero, which happens at 1 point per tick. A full-power jump charges for 8 ticks. While charging, the Spider Pig deals melee damage to every living entity in its bounding box except its owner and its own riders. Its jump launches it forward at 1.6 times the jump power. Cobwebs placed while charging last 600 ticks instead of 1200. A ridden Spider Pig's step height is raised by 0.4 blocks.

Drops

The Spider Pig's loot table has one roll, and it picks one of two sub-tables at random: the vanilla pig table or the vanilla spider table. A saddled Spider Pig also drops its saddle on death. When a Spider Pig kills a spider or a pig, the victim is converted into a Spider Pig instead of dying, so it leaves no drops.

Tips

  • Avoid standing in cobwebs near a Spider Pig. Its hits deal 4 extra damage to a target that is inside a web.
  • A saddled tamed Spider Pig is a mount. Wild ones despawn when no player is near, so tame one before you leave it unattended.
  • One way to tame a wild Spider Pig is to let it kill a Creeper Minion that belongs to you.
  • To make a Spider Pig with Chemical X, right-click a pig with a Fermented Spider Eye first, then apply the potion while the Unluck effect is active. The effect lasts 30 seconds.
  • Pigs run from players who hold a Fermented Spider Eye within 10 blocks, so hold the eye only when you are ready to apply it.
