The Mutant Snow Golem is a boss-scale version of the snow golem added by Mutant Monsters. It has 80 health (40 hearts) and fights at range: it throws blocks of ice at hostile mobs and at any mob or player that attacks it. It has no melee attack. Each ice block deals heavy damage to everything near its impact point, and the golem changes the ground around it as it moves.

The golem has no natural spawns. It appears only when a player places one with its spawn egg (Mutant Snow Golem Spawn Egg) or when a vanilla snow golem is converted by Chemical X.

Spawning

The mob has no biome spawn entries and does not appear in any structure. Its sources are:

  • The Mutant Snow Golem Spawn Egg, which places one at the target location.
  • A vanilla snow golem hit by Chemical X, which converts it into this mob.

An unowned golem can be tamed by a player (see Ownership below). Summoned golems start unowned.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The golem's AI runs these goals, in priority order:

  1. Swim-jump when in water (see Water below).
  2. Flee rain at speed 1.1, moving to a nearby position that is not raining.
  3. Ranged attack at speed 1.1, with a 30-tick interval and a range of 12 blocks.
  4. Ice throw (see below).
  5. Move back toward its restriction area, stroll, and look at players and mobs.

Its movement speed is 0.26 and its follow range is 16 blocks.

Targeting

The golem targets hostile mobs it can see, meaning any mob in the Enemy class. It also targets any mob that attacks it. A Mutant Creeper or other creeper is only a target when that creeper is already targeting the golem. Untamed creeper minions are valid targets. Players are not targeted unless they attack the golem.

Ice throw

When the golem has a target, it stops moving and starts a 20-tick throw animation. At tick 7 it launches a block of ice at the target, with an upward arc of half the distance to the target and a launch speed of 0.9. The ice shatters on the first thing it hits.

  • A direct hit does 4 damage to the struck entity.
  • Each mob within 2.5 blocks of the impact point takes 4 to 6 damage (4 plus a random value from 0 to 2).

Each throw is followed by the 30-tick attack interval before the next one.

Healing and damage sources

  • A snowball that hits the golem heals it by 1 health and does no damage.
  • While it stands in snowfall with open sky above it, it heals 1 health every 80 ticks.
  • In an ultra-warm dimension, or in a biome tagged as snow golems melting, it takes 1 fire damage every 60 ticks.
  • It is immune to freezing.

Water

When the golem is in water, it leaps out with a vertical velocity of 1.5 and a random horizontal push. The jump starts with 16 drowning damage (8 hearts), so every time the golem enters water it loses that much health. The golem is also marked as sensitive to water.

Terrain changes

While the golem is on the ground and the mobGriefing game rule is enabled (and the dimension is not ultra-warm), it changes the blocks in a 5 by 5 area around its position on every tick. The corners of the area are skipped.

  • Flowing water in the area is replaced with ice, at the block itself and at the block above it.
  • Empty air above solid ground receives snow layers. The chance is lower on the outer edge of the area than next to the golem.
  • The surface of water receives ice, again with a chance that drops toward the outer edge.

With mobGriefing disabled, the golem does not change any blocks.

Ownership

An unowned golem can be tamed by right-clicking it with any item except a snowball. The player who tames it becomes its owner. The owner can release it by right-clicking it again. An owned golem stays within 8 blocks of its owner, or within 16 blocks while it has a target. A tamed creeper minion is not a valid target for its ice.

Drops

The golem's loot table drops 32 to 48 snowballs on death. Nothing else drops from death.

A jack-o'-lantern comes from shearing. The golem starts with a jack-o'-lantern on its head. A player who uses shears on it removes the jack-o'-lantern and drops one jack-o'-lantern at the golem's position. The golem can only be sheared while it still has its jack-o'-lantern.

Tips

  • Fight from a distance and step out of the impact area after each throw. Each ice block that lands within 2.5 blocks of you deals 4 to 6 damage.
  • Snowballs heal the golem, so do not use them as a weapon against it.
  • Lure the golem into water only if you want it to take 16 damage at the start of each jump.
  • Tame the golem with any item except a snowball if you want it to stay near you. An owned golem will not follow you beyond 8 blocks.
  • Turn off mobGriefing if you do not want the golem to freeze water or cover ground in snow.
