The Maple Woods is a cool, humid forest biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a red-maple forest with a dense canopy and a cold rainy climate. In Fear Nightfall it is a forest biome with a heavy mix of undead, spider and horror mobs and several horror structures, so it is dangerous at night.
A colder variant, the Snowy Maple Woods, shares most of the spawn and structure tables described below.
The Maple Woods has a temperature of 0.25 and a downfall of 0.5, and its precipitation is rain rather than snow. Its water colour is #3f76e4, its fog colour #c0d8ff and its sky colour #7da3ff, which gives the biome a pale blue-grey tint.
The biome is forested with red maple trees. Its tree feature picks one of three tree types for each placement: a plain red maple (about 40%), a tall spruce (about 30%) or a large red maple (about 30%). The feature tries to place 12 trees per chunk, and 13 in a small share of chunks. Red maples drop red maple leaf piles, and the biome adds six more leaf piles per chunk. Grass and fern patches, snowy flowers, berry bushes, wild flax, wild potatoes and pumpkin patches cover the ground.
The canopy is dense, so the forest floor is shaded. Most of the biome's hostile mobs spawn in that shade at night.
Generation
The Maple Woods covers 0.53% of the land surface in the Fear Nightfall world and 0.07% of the cave layer at y=-30. It is one of the rarer forest biomes in the pack.
The pack's biome table gives each biome a share of its climate cell by weight. The Maple Woods is not one of the biomes given 6× weight, so it is not a horror hot spot on its own. Horror structures are placed about 30% closer together than in vanilla spacing, however, so the horror structures listed below turn up more often here than in ordinary woods.
Features
Trees. Red maple trees, large red maple trees and tall spruce trees. The maple logs and planks come from these trees.
Leaf piles. Red maple leaf piles, six extra per chunk on top of the piles that fall from the trees.
Plants. Grass and fern patches, snowy flowers, berry bushes, wild flax and wild potatoes. Pumpkin patches also generate on the ground.
Ores. The standard vanilla ore placements (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond and the andesite, diorite, granite and tuff veins), plus ore placements from Born in Chaos (infected diamond and black argillite), Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks (mithril) and Butchery (sulfur).
Cave urns. Cave urns from Supplementaries generate in the biome.
Underground. The biome uses the vanilla underground features of overworld biomes, including lava lakes, amethyst geodes and monster rooms.
Mobs and structures
The biome has 198 structures that can generate in it. Horror structures are the most prominent: Graveyards (dead trees, haunted houses and large graveyards), Born in Chaos taiga sites such as the Clown Caravan and the Dark Tower, Born in Chaos grave and ritual sites, and ruined catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Vanilla villages and outposts, along with towers, camps and cabins from other structure mods, also generate here.
The monster spawns are led by Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime at weight 100, and Zombie at weight 95. Horror mobs follow. Ghouls and Revenants from the Graveyard mod each have weight 25, the Slime Golem has weight 25, the Necromancer has weight 18, the Dread Hound has weight 7, the Bonescaller has weight 5 and Krampus has weight 1. The passive animals are sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, foxes, wolves and rabbits. Bats and glow squids spawn underground, and bluegill, perch, minnow and brown trout spawn in the water.
Carry light and a sword at night. The canopy blocks the sky, so the forest floor goes dark early and the hostile mobs spawn in numbers.
The Ghoul, the Revenant and the Slime Golem are the most common horror mobs here, and the Necromancer and Dread Hound appear less often but are more dangerous.
Check the structure table above before you explore. The Graveyard and Born in Chaos sites are the most hazardous, so visit them in daylight at full health.
Maple wood is one of the 13 wood sets that the Biomes O' Plenty mod adds, so the biome is a convenient place to collect maple logs for building.
