The Colored Sand and Sandstone family is a set of 34 blocks added by Biomes O' Plenty. It consists of four sand types (White, Orange, Black and Mossy Black Sand) and three sandstone types (White, Orange and Black Sandstone). Each sandstone type has chiseled, cut, smooth, stair, slab and, for most types, wall variants. The blocks serve mainly as building materials and as alternative ingredients for vanilla recipes, and they affect some mob and block behaviour in the pack.
Obtaining
The sand and sandstone blocks are obtained by crafting, smelting, stonecutting and trading. Sand blocks are mined with a shovel, and sandstone blocks require a pickaxe to drop. Sand and sandstone do not have a separate progression tier; they are available as soon as the player can craft them.
Crafting
Sandstone is crafted from four sand blocks of the same colour in a 2×2 grid. Mossy Black Sand is crafted from Black Sand and a Moss Block. Smooth variants are made by smelting the matching sandstone. The table below lists every recipe in the family.

The Wandering Trader can sell sand blocks. These listings are part of the trader's generic emerald trade pool, which is enabled by default and can be turned off in the Biomes O' Plenty configuration. The table below lists the trader's sand offers.

Usage
Sand
- White Sand, Orange Sand and Black Sand are falling blocks with a hardness of 0.5 and a blast resistance of 0.5. They can be used as the sand ingredient of a TNT alternative recipe: five Gunpowder and four sand blocks of any of the three colours make one TNT.
- All three smelt into Glass, as with vanilla Sand.
- Orange Sand is a spawn surface for Armadillos.
- Mossy Black Sand is a spawn surface for animals, and it is treated as a sand by the Sniffer, which can dig it.
- Mossy Black Sand is an overgrown variant of Black Sand. A random tick converts it to Black Sand when the space above it is a full fluid block or receives maximum light. When the space above is air, it can be bone-meal. Bone meal places short grass and a sprout plant on the block above.
- Sand blocks of all colours can be picked up by Endermen.
Sandstone
- White Sandstone, Orange Sandstone and Black Sandstone have a hardness of 0.8 and a blast resistance of 0.8. The stair, slab and wall variants share these values.
- Smooth variants have a hardness of 2.0 and a blast resistance of 6.0. They are made by smelting the matching sandstone for 200 ticks (10 seconds), which gives 0.1 experience.
- Cut sandstone is made from four sandstone blocks, and it can be stonecut from a single block. Cut sandstone slabs can be made from three cut blocks.
- Chiseled sandstone is made from two sandstone slabs of the same colour, or stonecut from a single sandstone block.
- Stairs are made from six sandstone blocks and yield four stairs, and slabs are made from three blocks and yield six slabs. Both can also be stonecut.
Null interaction
White Sand and White Sandstone are included in the tag that the Null Plant checks for survival. Because of a tag id mismatch in the mod, the tag that is actually read contains these two blocks, so Null Plants are able to survive on them.
