The Spider Webs and Spider Eggs are a group of cobweb-style and egg blocks added by Biomes O' Plenty. The group has five blocks: the Spider Egg, Hanging Cobweb, Hanging Cobweb Strand, Stringy Cobweb and Webbing. Natural generation is limited to the Spider Nest cave biome. Breaking or landing on a Spider Egg releases a Cave Spider, and the webs slow or trap anything that moves through them. In Fear Nightfall the Spider Nest is weighted 6× and spreads into neighbouring cave areas, so these blocks are a standing hazard in the pack's underground horror caves.

Obtaining

The five blocks generate only in the Spider Nest. Each chunk in that biome makes the following placement attempts:

Block Placement attempts per chunk
Spider Egg 35
Hanging Cobweb (with strands) 200
Stringy Cobweb 250
Webbing 20

Spider Eggs are placed on the top face of a solid block. Hanging Cobwebs hang from a ceiling as a column of strand blocks. Their strand length is weighted toward short lengths and is at most 15 blocks. Stringy Cobwebs are placed by searching down from air to a solid surface.

Among trader offers, the Spider Egg is a rare emerald listing for the Wandering Trader. No other block in this group appears in the trade table.

Mining

  • Spider Egg: drops itself only when broken with Silk Touch. Without Silk Touch it drops nothing, and breaking it spawns a cave spider at its position, provided block drops are enabled.
  • Hanging Cobweb and Hanging Cobweb Strand: drop a Hanging Cobweb only when broken with Shears.
  • Webbing: drops Webbing when broken with shears. The number of items depends on how many faces of the block are attached.

Usage

Spider Egg

The Spider Egg has 0.1 hardness and emits light at level 5. It is destroyed in three ways, and each one spawns a vanilla Cave Spider at the egg's position and removes the egg without dropping an item:

  • being hit by a projectile;
  • landing on it from a fall;
  • being caught in an explosion.

Silk Touch is the only way to collect the egg as an item, and it prevents the spider from spawning when the egg is broken by hand. Mobs do not path through a Spider Egg.

Hanging Cobweb and Hanging Cobweb Strand

Hanging Cobwebs form vertical strands that hang from ceilings. Each strand is a column of Hanging Cobweb Strand blocks ending in a Hanging Cobweb head. The head attaches to a solid face above or to another part of the same strand.

An entity that touches a Hanging Cobweb is stuck in place and moves at the reduced rate defined by the block's stuck-in-block vector (0.75 horizontally and 0.5 vertically). Both blocks have zero hardness, so they can be broken immediately.

Stringy Cobweb

Stringy Cobwebs form horizontal strands between surfaces. Each segment needs a sturdy block above it or a connected strand segment, and a sturdy block below it or a connected strand segment, in the direction it faces. A segment is set to one of three connection states: middle, bottom or top.

An entity inside a Stringy Cobweb keeps its vertical speed and has its horizontal speed multiplied by 0.75 each tick. Stringy Cobwebs are climbable, like vines. Breaking one segment also breaks the adjacent segments in its facing direction that rely on it for support.

Webbing

Webbing is a multi-face block that attaches to the faces of a solid block. Its spreading behaviour is disabled, so it does not grow into neighbouring blocks.

An entity inside Webbing has its horizontal velocity multiplied by 0.625 and its vertical velocity by 0.75 each tick. Webbing is the strongest of the slowing blocks in this group.

Flammability

All five blocks are flammable.

Fear Nightfall context

The Spider Nest is one of the biomes the pack weights 6× among its horror biomes, and the pack lets it spread into neighbouring cave areas. The Spider Nest's monster spawns include Spider (weight 100, group size 4) and Cave Spider (weight 50, group size 1–2), along with zombies, skeletons, creepers, slimes and witches. Because these blocks only generate inside the Spider Nest, players meet them in the caves the pack has extended the biome into.
