Undergrowth is a Nether biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a hot, dry forest of hellbark trees on Nether terrain, with blue water, a dark olive fog and a population dominated by ghasts, hoglins and striders. The mod classes it as hostile-leaning. Fear Nightfall places it in the same Nether regions as the other Biomes O' Plenty Nether biomes, so it is not limited to a single corner of the Nether.

Description

Undergrowth uses the ordinary Nether terrain shape, with netherrack, nether vines and the ores and fire patches listed under Features. Its colours are a blue water (#3f76e4), a dark olive fog (#1c2109) and a blue sky colour (#6eb1ff). The Nether ceiling normally hides the sky, so the blue sky has little visible effect. Water comes from the springs that the biome places.

The biome has its own sound design. Its music is music.nether.undergrowth, which is not replaced by the current music when it starts. Its ambient loop is the warped forest loop, and its mood sound is the crimson forest mood sound, played every 6000 ticks. The biome also emits spore blossom particles at a low rate.

Undergrowth has no precipitation, a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0.0. The Tough As Nails mod tags it as a hot biome.

Generation

Undergrowth is a Nether biome, so it generates only in the Nether. The pack's Nether layout keeps Nether Wastes at the centre of the common region. At four other points, the Biomes O' Plenty biomes replace the vanilla Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest and Basalt Deltas slots, and Undergrowth takes one of those slots. The rare Nether region places Withered Abyss at its centre and reuses the same four slots. Because of this, most vanilla non-wastes Nether biome space is replaced by Biomes O' Plenty biomes. Its share of the Nether is shown in the infobox.

Fear Nightfall's horror weighting does not apply to this biome. It is not one of the biomes the pack weights 6× for horror. Undergrowth's features have no height limit: its placement spans the full height of the Nether, from the bottom to the top.

Its monster spawn table is dominated by the ghast, which has a weight of 50, far above any other monster in the biome.

Features

Undergrowth's features are added on top of the standard Nether ore and fire decorations.

  • Hellbark trees. The trees are chosen from the Hellbark tree set. Each one has a 40% chance of being a big hellbark tree and otherwise a standard hellbark tree. Hellbark wood is listed under Hellbark Wood. The biome places 40 or 41 tree attempts per chunk, with 41 being the less common outcome.
  • Burning Blossom. The biome places patches of burning blossoms with up to 96 attempts per patch, spread over a 7-block radius. A burning blossom sets entities on fire while they stand next to it, except for hoglins and piglins, which are immune to its ignition. See Tips for its damage.
  • Bramble. The biome places 50 bramble bushes per chunk. Bramble hurts players on contact. See Tips.
  • Sprouts and dead grass. Sprouts and dead grass fill out the ground cover. Nether vines also grow in the biome.
  • Ores and decorations. The biome adds magma, gravel, blackstone, gold, quartz, glowstone, small and large ancient debris, and the Nether mushrooms. Patches of fire and soul fire also appear, and the biome adds springs.
  • Nether Expansion features. The biome also receives blotted netherrack, netherrack speleothems, pyroclast crusts, silt replacement and silt flint ore from the Nether Expansion mod.

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster spawns are led by ghasts, in groups of four, with a weight of 50. Hoglins spawn in groups of three or four, and magma cubes in groups of four, with a weight of 2. Striders are the only creature spawns, in groups of one or two, with a weight of 60. The monster table also includes the Born in Chaos mobs such as Dread Hound, Restless Spirit, Pumpkin Dunce, Zombie Lumberjack and Krampus. Undergrowth's water spawns include Corpse Fish, along with several Biomes O' Plenty fish from the ambient water category.

Undergrowth can host 88 structure types. Most are Nether structures, including the vanilla Nether fortress and bastion remnant, and mod structures such as Nether Keep and Port, Nether Skeleton Towers and Camps and Chapel and Sanctum.

The generated tables below list the spawn table and the structure placements for this biome.

Tips

  • Bramble damage. Bramble deals 1.0 damage on each tick that a player is inside it. Walk around bramble patches rather than through them.
  • Burning Blossom fire. Burning blossoms set most entities alight. Their fire damage appears to still apply to fire-immune mobs, based on the mod's code path, which has not been tested in play. Hoglins and piglins are not set alight by them.
  • Ghast groups. Ghasts are the most common monster here, and they arrive in groups of four. Expect fireballs in the open, and move through the biome under cover where possible.
  • Hoglins. Hoglins are not affected by burning blossoms, so they can walk through the flower patches without catching fire.
  • Striders. Striders are the only creature spawn, so the biome's passive mobs are limited to them.
