The Boreal Taiga is a cool, forested overworld biome added by Regions Unexplored. It takes over part of the vanilla taiga climate band and is covered by larch trees rather than spruce. In Fear Nightfall it is a regular place for undead and other night threats, so players will meet horror mobs here often.
Boreal Taiga is the non-snowy boreal taiga. Golden Boreal Taiga is a separate biome with golden larch trees. The snowy and old-growth boreal taigas are separate biomes as well.
Boreal Taiga has rolling terrain under a dense canopy of larch trees. Its ground is mostly peat, a dark dirt family that Regions Unexplored adds, with grass blocks, coarse dirt, and podzol mixed in. The grass is a muted green (#88af64) and the foliage is a slightly darker green (#7ba64e). Water is blue-tinted, and the fog and sky are pale blue.
Larch trees come in four forms: plain larch, larch-pine, golden larch, and golden larch-pine, with a few birch-aspen trees mixed in. Larch shrubs and golden larch shrubs grow between the trees, and fallen larch logs lie on the ground. Larch wood is available as a full wood set, see Larch Wood.
Generation
Boreal Taiga takes the climate of vanilla Taiga, with temperature 0.5 and downfall 0.4, so it rains rather than snows. It belongs to the boreal taigas group, which splits vanilla taigas by climate and gives the group a shared weight of 75. Its share of the land in Fear Nightfall is in the infobox.
Boreal Taiga is not one of the biomes given 6× horror weighting. That weighting covers Blackwood Taiga and other horror forests. The pack does, however, place horror structures about 30% closer together across the cool, humid forests and taigas, and Boreal Taiga is in that group.
Features
Boreal Taiga's terrain features are mostly vanilla ore and decoration sets, with additions from other mods:
Ores: vanilla coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis, redstone, and diamond, along with granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, dirt, and gravel patches. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore. Butchery adds deepslate sulfur ore (see Sulfur). Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore (see Mithril).
Plants: large ferns, sugar cane, common berry bushes, pumpkin patches, azure daisy patches, and short grass patches. Supplementaries adds wild flax.
Terrain: lava lakes above and below ground, amethyst geodes, monster rooms, and stony cliff features. Supplementaries adds cave urns.
The surface uses the peat rules, and Boreal Taiga is in the peat biome tag. Trees rooted on peat get peat dirt under their trunks. Sheep grazing turns peat grass into dirt. Crops grow on peat farmland. Wolves and snow layers can sit on peat.
Mobs and structures
Boreal Taiga's hostile mob list is long. The most heavily weighted are the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper, slime, and zombie, along with the horror mobs Ghoul, Revenant, and Necromancer. Rarer horror mobs include Dread Hound and Nightmare Stalker. Passive animals include sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, wolves, foxes, and rabbits. Fish and other water life spawn in the lakes.
The biome's structures include the Catacombs, a Dark Tower and Clown Caravan from Born in Chaos, and Firewell structures. Graveyard ruins, large graveyards, and dead trees are common. Illager camps, villages, and castle ruins also generate. The full list of structures and mobs is in the tables below.
Check the mob list before travelling through the biome at night. Ghouls and revenants are among the most heavily weighted horror mobs here, so carry a sword and light.
Peat supports crop farming and tree growth, so a base in this biome can grow its own food.
Fallen larch logs are a ready source of wood on the forest floor.
Lakes in this biome hold water life, so fishing is possible here.
