The Branches and Shrubs are decorative plant blocks added by Regions Unexplored. A branch is a thin block that attaches to the side of a log, and a shrub is a two-block-tall plant that grows on dirt. Each wood type has its own branch and shrub, and they are purely decorative. Branches are made from logs and placed on trees during generation. Shrubs are made from saplings and placed in biomes by the mod's shrub features. Players mainly use them to add detail to forests, and crafting a shrub back into saplings gives a second source of saplings.
The page covers the branches and shrubs for the eight vanilla wood types (oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, cherry and mangrove), along with two wood-free plants: the Steppe Shrub and the Small Desert Shrub.
Obtaining
Branches are obtained in two ways:
- Crafting. Each branch is made from one log of its wood type and one stick, giving two branches. See the recipes below.
- Natural generation. Tree decorators place branches on tree trunks. The random branch decorator attaches a branch to a log with a chance set by its probability value, and only where the required number of blocks above the log are empty. Whether branches are placed at all is controlled by the
branch_modeconfig option. The default,place_branches, places branches. The alternatives areplace_logs, which places logs in their place, anddont_place.
Shrubs are obtained in two ways:
- Crafting. Two saplings of a wood type make one shrub. The reverse recipe turns one shrub into two saplings.
- Natural generation. Shrubs are placed by the mod's shrub features. With the default
common_shrubssetting, shrubs are added to 13 vanilla biomes, including Taiga, Jungle, Forest, Birch Forest, Dark Forest, Mangrove Swamp, Cherry Grove and Windswept Forest. The Small Desert Shrub is placed by desert patch features on grass and on sand,

Usage
Branches
A branch is a horizontal block that attaches to the face of a log. It takes the horizontal direction of the face the player clicks, so it has four facings: north, south, east and west. Its shape is a thin bar a quarter of a block thick and five-sixteenths of a block tall, running the full block length along the axis it faces.
A branch can only be placed against a full block of the #minecraft:logs block tag. Branches have a hardness of 1 and a blast resistance of 1.5, so they are harder to break than a shrub. They are flammable.
Shrubs
Shrubs are two blocks tall, with a lower and an upper half. The lower half must sit on a block of the #minecraft:dirt block tag. Shrubs have a hardness of 0, so they break instantly with any tool. They are flammable, and their compost chance is 65%.
The mangrove shrub is a variant that can be waterlogged. It will not place where its upper half would sit in water, and it cannot be replaced by another block while it stands.
Small Desert Shrub
The Small Desert Shrub is a single-block dead-bush style plant. It can only be placed on the #minecraft:dead_bush_may_place_on block tag. Its compost chance is 30%, and it has a recipe that turns it into one brown dye. It is not used for saplings.
Steppe Shrub
The Steppe Shrub is a single-block plant that belongs to the regions_unexplored:grass item tag. It has a compost chance of 30%.
