Scorching Caves (Removed) is a hot, underground-style biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is one of the mod's fourteen retired biomes. The biome is registered and its data is complete, but it is not placed in the Fear Nightfall overworld, so a player cannot find it through normal exploration. Its terrain, colours, sounds and mob tables are still defined, and they describe a dangerous cave biome that would be a hard place to spend a night if it were ever enabled.

Description

Scorching Caves is a hot, dry biome with a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0. It never rains or snows. Its grass is a dull olive-brown (#7c7260) and its foliage a grey-olive (#776f66). Water is blue (#3f76e4), fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the sky a clear blue (#79a6ff). Underwater fog is a very dark blue (#050533).

The biome's atmosphere is set by its effects. Its ambient sound is the cave ambience, played about every 6000 ticks, and its background music is the dripstone caves track. Occasional white ash particles drift through the air, with a probability of 0.003 per tick.

Generation

Scorching Caves is tagged as removed and as a cave biome. It is missing from the overworld biome table, it is hidden from the world creation biome list, and the mod's default configuration does not place it. The biome therefore has no weight and does not appear in the pack's biome layout, and it has no share of the land.

The biome's carvers are the vanilla cave, extra underground cave and canyon carvers, so the biome would be dug out by the same tunnels as other caves if it were placed. The mod's configuration could place the biome again by adding it to its biome placements. This has not been tested, and it is not part of the pack's default setup. Players who want a cave biome should look in the live Redstone Caves or Inferno biomes instead.

The biome has no horror weighting, because it is not placed. Its mob list, however, is full of Fear Nightfall horror mobs, so a re-enabled Scorching Caves would be a dangerous night biome.

Features

Scorching Caves has the terrain features of a cave biome, plus surface features borrowed from the plains and other biomes:

  • Underground ores of every common type, including coal, iron, gold, redstone, copper, lapis lazuli and diamond, along with the extra diamond and buried variants. The mod's Born in Chaos and Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks ore features are also placed here.
  • Lava: underground and surface lava lakes, lava falls and overworld lava deltas. The lava is the main hazard of the biome.
  • Underwater magma, amethyst geodes, and monster rooms (both the normal and the deep variant).
  • Sand, clay and gravel disks, and the mod's ash vent feature.
  • Surface vegetation: plains-type trees and grass, flowers, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane, pumpkin patches and glow lichen.
  • Cave urns and wild flax from the Supplementaries mod, and a cliff feature from a separate worldgen mod.

The lava features are the most dangerous part of the biome, since lava lakes and falls sit in the same caves as the ores and monster rooms.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables below are generated from the biome's data. The monster list is the largest and the most dangerous part of the biome. The most common monsters are spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and the Ashen, each with a weight of 100. Zombies follow with a weight of 95. Several of the Fear Nightfall horror mobs are also in the list, including the Dread Hound (weight 7), the Necromancer (weight 18) and the Krampus (weight 1). The ambient and water tables add a few coal golems, bats and fish, and the water creature table includes Corpse Fish.

A Slime Golem has a weight of 25 in the monster list, and the list holds 55 monster entries in total, so the spawn tables are wide rather than dominated by one mob.

Tips

  • Scorching Caves does not appear in the world, so the tables above are for reference only. A player who wants a cave biome should use the live biomes listed above.
  • If the biome is ever enabled, bring fire protection and a supply of food before going down into the lava caves.
  • The mob list is dense. Keep light near the spawn areas, and avoid travelling through the biome at night.
