Desert Canyon is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a desert variant that is cut by deep canyons. Its spawn lists include many of the horror mobs that the pack's other mods add, so it is a common place to meet them.

Description

The biome is a sandy, sandstone-heavy landscape. Its surface includes the Terralith desert sandstone feature, so the ground reads as layered sand and stone rather than flat dunes. The canyon carver cuts the terrain into deep ravines, so walls of exposed stone rise between open sand floors. Caves are carved by the usual cave carvers as well, which means the canyon walls often open into underground passages.

Vegetation is sparse and desert-themed. Cacti, dead bushes, sugar cane and pumpkin patches appear on the surface. Glow lichen, mushrooms and small flower patches add a few colours to the lower, shaded areas. Water is rare on the surface. Springs of water and lava are placed underground, and small lava lakes can appear both at the surface and below it.

The biome has no precipitation. Its temperature is hot, so it counts as a hot, dry, sandy biome for mods and tags that depend on those categories. The fog and sky are pale blue, and the water is a light cyan. The ambient music is the vanilla desert track, with a cave ambience played at intervals.

Generation

Desert Canyon is a Terralith biome that generates in hot, dry climate cells. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.11% of the land surface. That share is small on its own, but the pack's biome table divides land between the mods' biomes, so Terralith biomes in general take a large share of the overworld. Desert Canyon is one of the many Terralith options that compete for each hot, dry cell.

The biome is not horror-weighted. The pack's 6x weight applies to forest, swamp and taiga biomes, and deserts are left near their normal weight. Monsters still appear here in large numbers, because several horror mods add their own mobs to the biome's spawn lists. The spawn tables below list them.

The biome can generate 167 structures from many mods, so it is a good place to find varied structures in one area. The structure table below lists them.

Features

The biome's generated features are mostly vanilla and Terralith terrain, plus a few additions from other mods:

  • Ores. Coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond and the vanilla deepslate and stone ore variants generate throughout the biome. Diorite, granite, andesite and tuff are placed as stone-variant patches. Gravel and dirt patches are scattered at the surface.
  • Infected ores. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite to the biome. Butchery adds sulfur ore in the deep layers, and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore.
  • Underground features. Amethyst geodes, fossils, monster rooms and deep monster rooms are placed underground. Lava lakes appear both underground and on the surface.
  • Plants and crops. Cacti, dead bushes, sugar cane and pumpkins are placed on the surface. Farmer's Delight adds wild tomato patches, and Supplementaries adds wild flax and cave urns.
  • Desert well. The vanilla desert well is placed here.
  • Water. Springs of water and lava are placed underground, and underwater magma and sand, clay and gravel disks are placed in the water.

Monsters from the biome's spawn lists are the main hazard. The spawn tables are listed in the section below.

Mobs and structures

The monster spawn list is one of the longest in the pack. The vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper and slime have the highest weights, followed by husk. Slime Golem and Skeleton Creeper are also common. Among the horror mobs, Dread Hound and Nightmare have a moderate weight, and Krampus and Lifestealer are among the rarest. Many Born in Chaos mobs are skeleton and pumpkin variants, so those enemy types make up a large share of the monsters here.

The other spawn lists are smaller. Rabbits spawn here as the gold variant, and camels can appear at a low weight. Bats and glow squids spawn at the surface and underground. Water creatures include Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish from Born in Chaos, along with a range of other fish.

Notable structures that can generate here include:

Vanilla desert pyramids and desert wells, and the Terralith fortified desert village, also generate here. The structure table below gives the full list.

Tips

Bring a melee weapon and a shield, because the monster spawns are mostly close-range enemies. Light the canyon floors and the areas under overhangs, since the deep walls are shaded and monsters spawn in darkness.

Surface water is rare. Carry enough water before going deep into the canyons, since the underground springs are the only other source.
