The Caldera is a temperate mountain-slope biome added by the Terralith mod. Its defining feature is a sunken crater basin filled with water and cobbled deepslate, with pockets of lava and magma below the surface. Caldera is rare on the surface of a Fear Nightfall world (see the infobox for its share of land), but its many structures and its horror mobs make it a dangerous place to explore after dark.

Description

A caldera has a bowl-shaped floor below the surrounding slopes. The crater floor is paved with cobbled deepslate, which replaces the stone of the floor in patches. Water pools collect in the cobbled deepslate basins across the crater. Grass is tinted #c6d097, a dry olive green, and water is tinted #77e0f7, a pale turquoise. Fog is #e0e9ff and the sky colour is #77a8ff.

The surrounding slopes are covered in the ordinary temperate surface of the overworld: grass, trees and the occasional flower. Ore veins of coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond generate in the stone, and the biome has its own andesite, diorite, granite and tuff veins. Caves and cave ambience follow the normal overworld rules, with the standard ambient cave sound.

Generation

Caldera is a mountain biome that sits on slopes and is classed as temperate, with a temperature of 0.45 and a downfall of 0.8, so it receives rain rather than snow. It is placed on mountain slopes.

Its share of land is recorded in the infobox as 0.00% for this pack, so a player should not expect to find it by chance on a normal walk. Travel to a mountain slope and search there.

The biome is not one of the biomes that Fear Nightfall weights six times more heavily for horror content. That weighting is applied to the Dark Forest, Spider Nest, Sleepy Hollows, Deep Dark and similar biomes. Caldera's horror content comes from its structures and from the mob pool that the pack's horror mods add to nearly every biome.

Features

  • Crater basins. The crater floor is cut into a basin by the biome's terrain modifier. The basin is flooded with water in lakes that the biome places in cobbled deepslate, with water up to about 8 blocks from each pool's centre.
  • Lava lakes. Vanilla underground and surface lava lakes can generate here, so lava may sit beneath the water or in the open crater floor.
  • Magma and vents. Magma blocks are placed on the floor of water, two to three patches per chunk. Lit campfires are placed at vent sites where magma blocks lie beneath water.
  • Geodes. Vanilla amethyst geodes are placed in the stone.
  • Monster rooms. Both the standard and deep monster rooms (dungeons with spawners) are placed in the stone.
  • Plants. Flowers, large ferns, berry bushes, sugar cane and pumpkin patches grow on the slopes. Wild carrots and onions from Farmer's Delight also appear here, along with wild flax from Supplementaries.
  • Caves. The biome uses vanilla cave and canyon carvers,

Mobs and structures

The tables below list every hostile, passive and water mob that can spawn in Caldera and every structure that can generate here. Caldera can generate 217 different structures, drawn from Terralith, Fear Nightfall's horror mods and vanilla.

Caldera has a long monster list. Its hostile spawns include the standard vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, each with a high weight. Horror mobs from Born in Chaos and the spellcasters from Iron's Spellbooks appear among them, including the Necromancer, which has a weight of 18, the Dread Hound, and the pumpkin family such as Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin. Rarer bosses appear too, including Krampus and the Lifestealer, each with a weight of 1.

Structures include horror sites such as the Dark Tower, the Firewell and the Catacombs, as well as Fortified Villages and illager hideouts.

Tips

  • Carry a full set of torches and a sword before you enter a Caldera at night. Monster spawns are dense, and horror groups such as Dread Hounds arrive in packs.
  • Watch the water and the floor. Lava lakes and magma blocks sit in and around the crater's pools, and magma blocks hurt anyone who stands on them.
  • The crater's stone is cobbled deepslate, which is not a useful block for building. Bring stone from elsewhere if you need a building material.
  • If you are looking for Caldera on purpose, check the mountain slopes near water. The biome is uncommon, so a long search can be needed.
