Wintry Forest and Wintry Lowlands are two snow-covered biomes added by Terralith. Both are cold, snowy taiga-type biomes that share the same climate, colours, ground layers and spawn data, and differ mainly in how much of the world they cover and where they are placed. In Fear Nightfall they are a small part of the land, but they are one of the places where horror mobs, horror structures and cold-weather hazards meet, so a player who travels north or into the frozen regions will meet them.
Wintry Forest is a snowy forest of spruce trees. Its ground is covered with snow layers of varying height, and snow blocks and powder snow appear under the trees. The water is dark blue (#3938C9), the fog is pale grey-blue (#D7D8E1) and the sky is a muted grey-blue (#A5B0BD). Rare white ash particles drift through the air, and the biome plays the cave ambient sound at intervals.
The vegetation is mostly the Terralith snowy tree set. Spruce trees are placed in four groups, from small trees at the edge to giant spruce in the centre, and the centre of the biome also gets mega and max spruce trees. Other plants include large ferns, grass, flowers, sugar cane, pumpkins, common berry bushes, and red and brown mushrooms. Grass that lies under snow cover is replaced by snowy grass blocks.
Wintry Lowlands
Wintry Lowlands uses the same colours, sky, fog, ambient sound, snow layers, tree groups, plant features, ores and spawn tables as Wintry Forest. The two biomes differ in their tags, their share of the land and the structures that can generate in them, described below. They look alike, and a player crossing between them will notice little change in the terrain.
Generation
Both biomes are cold, humid and snowy: their temperature is -0.5 and their downfall is 0.4, and they rain as snow. Wintry Forest covers about 0.23% of the land in Fear Nightfall and Wintry Lowlands about 0.10%, so together they cover about one third of a percent of the world.
Terralith's biomes make up about 31% of the land in Fear Nightfall. Neither wintry biome is weighted up as a horror biome: they are not among the biomes the pack weights 6×, such as Dark Forest or Sleepy Hollows. Their mob spawns and structures are nonetheless heavily horror-themed (see below).
Wintry Lowlands carries the vanilla stronghold-biased biome tag, which makes it a preferred location for strongholds. Both biomes are included in the Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks ice spider patrol biomes, which cover snowy and icy biomes but not oceans.
Features
Trees: the Terralith snowy spruce set, described under Description. The trees are placed on snow blocks and powder snow.
Ores: the standard overworld ore set (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, and their deepslate variants) plus ores added by the pack. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore, and Butchery adds sulfur ore. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore.
Liquids: lakes of lava appear underground and on the surface, and springs of water and lava appear in the ground.
Caves and dungeons: the biome has the vanilla cave and canyon carvers, amethyst geodes, and the regular and deep monster rooms.
Snow: the biome places layers of snow of heights 2 to 7 across the ground, and snow fills the gaps in the surface where needed.
Structures: both biomes can hold about 200 or more structure types, including horror structures from the pack. See the list below.
Mobs and structures
The tables below show the mobs that spawn in these biomes and the structures that can generate in them. Monster spawns are the largest group, with 58 monster types, and many of them come from horror mods such as Graveyard, Born in Chaos and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Water spawns include the Born in Chaos Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish (the table lists the exact weights).
Powder snow slows movement and can freeze the player, so keep to the snow layers and solid ground where possible.
The most heavily weighted monsters are spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, each at weight 100 in the monster table. Many horror types from the pack spawn alongside them, so treat the biome as hostile at night.
Ice spiders patrol these biomes. The Ice Spider is the mob to expect, and the Ice Spider Den is the structure where they gather.
