The Ice Spider is a hostile mob added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It is a large, armoured spider that hunts players and iron golems, pounces onto its targets, and casts frost spells. It is far tougher than a vanilla spider, with 50 health and an armour value of 20, and it appears in the overworld during rain. Its drops include Arcane Essence and the Icy Fang, and its eggs can be turned into a cooked food that is also a trap.

Spawning

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Ice Spiders do not appear in ordinary biome spawning. They enter the world in three ways:

  • Rain patrols. While it is raining in the overworld, a server spawner tries to start an Ice Spider hunt near a random player who is not in creative mode or spectator mode. Each check has roughly a 50% chance of proceeding, so a rainy spell usually produces a hunt within a few minutes. The spawner runs on a timer of about 8 minutes divided by the number of player groups, plus up to 3 minutes of random delay. The spawn point is 24 to 47 blocks away from the player on each axis, and it must be in a biome tagged for Ice Spider patrols, which covers snowy and icy biomes. If the first try fails, the spawner tries again up to three more times, and each retry must also land in a patrol biome. The patrols can be disabled in the mod's configuration with iceSpiderPatrols, which is true in Fear Nightfall.
  • Ice Spider Eggs. Breaking a frosted Ice Spider Egg summons a spider nearby. See the section on related items below.
  • Ice Spider Lure. When the Ice Spider Lure effect wears off, the mob runs a hunt spawn with eight placement attempts instead of four. The lure therefore draws Ice Spiders toward the player who had it, but only in the same patrol biomes.

The Ice Spider Den structure is a separate overworld structure placed in snowy and icy biomes, and it is described on its own page.

The Ice Spider Spawn Egg creates an Ice Spider when used, for players who want to place one directly.

Behavior

An Ice Spider is a hostile monster with 50 health (25 hearts), an armour value of 20, and an attack damage of 8. It moves at a speed of 0.35 and tracks targets from up to 32 blocks away. Its knockback resistance is 0.6, so it is hard to push back. Its size is 1.75 by 1.9 blocks, and it can step up 1.5 blocks at a time.

The spider's movement is unusual for a spider. When it meets a horizontal wall it climbs the face, and when it meets an overhang it crouches to fit under it. A crouching spider takes less space and moves more slowly, which makes it hard to predict in tunnels and cave entrances.

Targeting

Ice Spiders attack players and iron golems as their default targets. They also attack villagers and raiders. They retaliate against any mob that hurts them. Animals such as cows, pigs and sheep are a separate case: an Ice Spider only hunts animals while its satiation is low enough (see below).

Melee and spells

In melee, the spider uses one of three attack animations: a bite, a fang strike, or a right-hand swipe. It also has two spells, a snowball and ice spikes, which it uses at range with a spell quality of 0.75.

Pounce and grapple

Every 3 to 8 seconds, the spider can pounce on its target. The pounce is a 40-tick animation. The leap starts on tick 20, and the damage window is ticks 30 to 35. If the spider reaches its target during that window, the pounce hits and the spider latches on as a grapple. While it is grappling a target, the spider takes only 20% of the damage dealt by that target.

Leap back

When the spider is hit by a direct melee attack while it is aggressive, not crouching and not grappling, it may leap backward and cast spells instead of pressing the attack. The chance scales with the size of the hit. A hit of 12 damage or more gives the maximum chance of 70%, and small hits give about 2%.

Iron golems

The spider takes half damage from iron golems. This makes an iron golem a practical companion when fighting one, although the spider still treats golems as targets.

Satiation

Ice Spiders have a satiation value that governs hunting. Satiation falls by 1 every 45 seconds. Its hunger state works as follows:

  • The spider becomes hungry when satiation drops below 10.
  • A hungry spider keeps hunting animals until satiation reaches 18.
  • A spider that is not hungry only hunts animals while satiation is below 10.

Killing an animal raises satiation by the animal's maximum health, rounded up. Food items dropped by that animal are removed from the drops. When an Ice Spider is out of combat for 15 seconds, below full health and has satiation above zero, it regenerates 1 health every 2 seconds and loses 1 satiation for each point healed.

Drops

ItemAmountConditions
Arcane Essencex4.0-16.0 +looting bonus
Stringx2.0-5.0 +looting bonus
Icy Fang40% chance, killed_by_player

The Icy Fang drop is affected by the Looting enchantment. Without looting, it has a 40% chance to drop. With Looting I, the chance rises to 50%, and each additional level adds 5 percentage points.

Ice Spiders are tied to four items and one structure. Their recipes and uses are listed below.

  • Ice Spider Egg (Ice Spider Egg) is a rare block that can be placed in the world. A frosted egg summons an Ice Spider when the player breaks it, and the egg is left in place with the frosted state removed. Silk Touch collects the egg only when it is not frosted.
  • Prepared Ice Spider Egg (Prepared Ice Spider Egg) is made from an Ice Spider Egg in a crafting grid. It can be cooked in a furnace, a smoker or a campfire.
  • Cooked Ice Spider Egg (Cooked Ice Spider Egg) is the cooked form. Each time it is eaten, it restores 4 hunger and 1 saturation, and it applies the Frostbitten Strikes effect at level 10 for 45 seconds. Eating it again while the effect is active adds another 45 seconds. The egg has three bites. The fourth interaction removes the block.
  • Ice Spider Spawn Egg (Ice Spider Spawn Egg) creates an Ice Spider.
  • Icy Fang (Icy Fang) is a loot drop from the Ice Spider.
  • Arcane Essence and String are the other drops from the Ice Spider.

Tips

Pounces are the spider's most dangerous attack, because they grapple the target. Keep moving, and stay out of tight tunnels where the spider can crouch under overhangs and climb walls to reach you.

The spider's armour of 20 reduces the damage of most attacks, so use strong weapons or spells. Its leap-back behaviour can break up a melee combo, so plan for a short retreat after a heavy hit.

Iron golems deal half damage to the spider, so they are useful companions in a fight.

A frosted Ice Spider Egg summons a spider when broken. Break eggs in a place where you can handle the fight, and not beside a base or a sleeping area.

Cooked Ice Spider Eggs give strong food and a long debuff. Plan to eat them when you do not need to fight.
