Scroll Forge and Inks covers the Scroll Forge, the crafting block that writes spell scrolls, and the five rarity tiers of ink that it consumes. Both are added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Every scroll made at the Scroll Forge needs one ink, so a player who wants scrolls needs a supply of ink first. Ink is also used at the Arcane Anvil to merge with an existing scroll and raise its level.

The ink rarities are Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic and Legendary. Each ink is a stackable item with a maximum stack size of 64. The rarity of the ink used in the Scroll Forge sets the level of the scroll it produces. Uncommon through Legendary inks can be brewed from the tier below in the Alchemist Cauldron.

Inks are found in chests and from the wandering trader, and the higher tiers can be brewed in the Alchemist Cauldron.

The Scroll Forge is made from Polished Deepslate and Crying Obsidian, as shown above. It requires a pickaxe to mine. Breaking it drops the items in its three input slots (ink, paper and focus). The result slot is not dropped.

Brewing an ink tier uses an ingredient and the tier below it. An Uncommon ink brew uses a Copper Ingot and 1000 mB of Common ink to make 250 Uncommon ink. A Rare brew uses an Iron Ingot and 1000 mB of Uncommon ink, an Epic brew uses a Gold Ingot and 1000 mB of Rare ink, and a Legendary brew uses an Amethyst Shard and 1000 mB of Epic ink. Each brew yields 250 bottles of the new tier. Ink can also be bottled one bottle at a time, with 250 mB of ink and a Glass Bottle giving one bottle of the same tier.

Loot and drops

Common ink is the most widespread. It appears in many of the mod's structure chests, with chances of about 60 to 80 percent per chest in the Evoker Fort, the Catacombs and the Citadel. The higher tiers are concentrated in the deeper vaults:

  • Rare ink is found in the Citadel vault (about 67 percent per chest) and in the Dead King vault of the Catacombs (about 58 percent).
  • Epic ink is found in the Citadel vault (about 85 percent) and the Dead King vault (about 73 percent). The captain's quarters of the Impaled Icebreaker always contain Epic ink (100 percent per chest).
  • Legendary ink is found in the Citadel vault (about 82 percent) and the Dead King vault (about 75 percent). Smaller chances come from the Trial Chambers reward vaults and the Pharaoh hidden chest of the desert temple.

The wandering trader offers five ink buy-back trades and five ink sell trades in its generic pool, along with three random scroll trades. These trades are controlled by the mod's additional wandering trader trades setting, which is enabled by default.

Usage

The Scroll Forge is a four-slot menu, opened by right-clicking the block. The slots are:

  • an ink slot, which accepts any ink;
  • a paper slot, which accepts paper;
  • a school focus slot, which accepts a school focus item;
  • a result slot, which shows the finished scroll and cannot be filled by hand.

The player selects a spell from the forge's spell list. A result appears only when all three inputs are present and the spell meets two conditions: the spell must allow crafting, and the focus must belong to the spell's school. Taking the result removes one ink, one paper and one focus.

The scroll's spell level depends on the ink's rarity relative to the spell. Ink at the spell's minimum rarity gives level 1, and each higher ink tier raises the level, up to the spell's maximum level. See Scrolls for how scrolls are cast and upgraded.

Inks are used in the Alchemist Cauldron brewing steps listed above. Each tier above Common requires the tier below it, so no tier can be skipped.

Scroll merging

Ink can also be applied to an existing scroll in the Arcane Anvil to raise its rarity and level. This is controlled by the mod's scroll-merging setting, which is enabled by default.

Bloody Vellum

Bloody Vellum is a crafting material with no function on its own. It is an ingredient in the Greater Conjurer's Talisman and the Vampiric Spell Book, as shown in the uses table above. It is not a scroll or an ink.
