Toxic Lair is an underground horror structure added by Dungeons and Taverns. It is a large, decayed lair built from a central entrance and a set of outside houses, underground rooms and spawner rooms. It is populated with spiders, zombies, skeletons, slimes and witches, and its deepest rooms hold boss spawners and a reward vault. Players care about it because it has a dedicated boss encounter, two lair-specific keys, and a boss vault with enchanted books, storage blocks and froglights. Fear Nightfall counts it among its horror structures.

Generation

The structure generates in the Overworld, in the swamp biome collection (#nova_structures:collections/swamps). Biomes that qualify include Swamp, Mangrove Swamp, Willow Swamp, Bayou, Marsh, Fen, Wetland, Bog, Floodplain and Fungal Fen. It is placed in the underground_decoration generation step, so its rooms are built into the terrain. The lair's entrance anchor sits at a fixed height of Y 67.

Placement uses a random-spread set with a spacing of 84 chunks and a separation of 21 chunks. The lair is one of four structures in the nova_structures:swamp_structure set. It has a weight of 1 out of a set total of 4. The spacing is already scaled by the pack's sparse-structure factor. In a 26 km² survey of swamp terrain, no lair was observed, so it should be treated as rare. As a horror structure, it is subject to the pack's horror placement changes, and horror structures concentrate in humid, temperate-to-cool forests and swamps rather than in deserts, jungles or peaks.

Layout

The lair is built from a start pool that places the main entrance. A jigsaw of up to six levels (size 6) then connects the rest of the structure. The template pools include:

  • Outside houses: the toxic_lair_outside_house_* templates, which make up the above-ground part of the lair.
  • Ruins: a ruins pool of broken structures.
  • Foundations: cobblestone, log and stone-brick foundation pieces that support the outside houses.
  • Underground rooms: several variants, including a standard room, a room without a door, a decorated room, and a fallback room.
  • Mob rooms: a pool that adds hostile mobs to the rooms (see the Inhabitants section below).
  • Spawner rooms: rooms with a boss spawner and a vault. Each spawner room picks either a normal vault or an ominous vault, with the normal vault weighted twice as heavily as the ominous one.

The lair's blocks pass through the toxic_lair_degradation and toxic_lair_surface_degradation processors, which give the structure its decayed look. The structure scan found 145 templates in total.

Inhabitants

While a player is in the lair, the structure's monster spawn overrides spawn the following mobs. Each entry lists its relative weight and the group size used when it spawns.

Mob Weight Group size
Spider 100 4
Zombie 95 4–16
Zombie Villager 5 1
Skeleton 100 4
Creeper 100 4
Slime 200 4
Enderman 30 1–4
Cave Spider 200 1–16
Drowned 95 4
Witch 400 1
Bogged 200 1
Pufferfish 200 1

The witch has the highest weight of any entry. Cave spiders and slimes come next. The template scan also found spiders, cave spiders, slimes, witches and zombies placed directly in the structure.

Spawner rooms hold a boss spawner. There are two boss variants, a slime boss and a spider boss, and each has an ominous version.

Loot

The lair's chests draw on several loot tables. The strongest loot is in the boss vault. It always contains a bow (100%). It also has a block of emerald, iron or gold (58–60%), an enchanted book (43%), an ominous bottle (57%), arcane essence (46%), a golden apple (28%), and froglights (27–32%).

The other chest tables are a generic chest, a brewing chest and a kitchen chest. The brewing chest is the source of splash potions (100%), scrolls, ancient knowledge fragments and ink. The generic chest holds moss blocks, emeralds, diamonds and iron ingots, along with a trial key (10%) and a smithing template (2%). The kitchen chest holds baked potatoes, onions and cooked fish.

Two lair-specific keys exist. The Toxic Key is a Trial Key renamed for the lair. The Toxic Boss Key is an Ominous Trial Key renamed for the boss room. The spider boss spawner's reward loot is the Toxic Boss Key.

The lair also has its own archaeology and pot loot tables (nova_structures:archaelogy/archeology_toxic and nova_structures:pots/pot_toxic). Completing the approach advancement, "Approach the toxic lair," is a child of the find-all-illager-structures advancement.

Tips

The mob rooms spawn groups of up to sixteen zombies and cave spiders. Fight from a narrow corridor or doorway so that only a few enemies can reach you at once. Witches are the most heavily weighted spawn in the lair, so deal with them early.

The boss vault has the strongest loot in the lair, so check it first when you are in the boss room. The Toxic Boss Key is the boss spawner's reward, so the key is only obtained through the boss encounter.

Because the lair is rare and sits in swamp biomes, it is worth locating one before committing to a long fight.
