The Tomato is a crop and food item added by Farmer's Delight. It is grown as a multi-stage vine, harvested for 1–2 tomatoes per mature plant, and used in the mod's cooking system, most often as Tomato Sauce in the Cooking Pot. The mod also adds the Tomato Seeds, the Tomato Crate storage block, the Rotten Tomato throwable, and a wild Tomato Shrub that grows naturally in hot biomes. Tomatoes are one of the vegetables that villagers buy and eat, so they are a steady source of emeralds for players who set up farms.

Obtaining

Tomatoes come from three sources: planting and harvesting Tomato Seeds, breaking the Tomato Shrub or cutting it on a Cutting Board, and trading with villagers. Tomato Seeds can also be found in village chests.

Growing and harvesting

Tomato Seeds are planted on farmland. The plant then grows through a budding stage, which is a Budding Tomato Vine that can be bone-meal boosted, and then into a Tomato Vine with four growth stages (age 0 to 3). A plant grows only when it has a light level of at least 9. On each random tick at that light level it has a 1 in 6 chance to advance one stage.

A mature Tomato Vine is harvested by right-clicking it. The harvest yields 1 or 2 Tomatoes (an equal chance of each), and the plant resets to age 0. Each harvest also has a 5% chance to drop one Rotten Tomato. Harvesting does not remove the plant, so one set of seeds can supply a repeating crop.

Tomatoes can also grow hanging on a rope. The Tomato Vine on Rope is a variant that grows on a Rope block, and the vine climbs tagged ropes when the config option is on (it is on by default). Rope permanence is also on by default: if a Tomato Vine on Rope is broken, a Rope block is left behind in its place.

Mature Tomato Vines and the Budding Tomato Vine both respond to bone meal. On Rich Soil, the soil itself has a 20% chance per random tick to bone-meal the crop above or below it. This chance is configurable from 0.0 to 1.0.

Wild Tomato Shrub

The Tomato Shrub (wild tomatoes) is a small-flower plant that generates in hot overworld biomes that are not tagged as wet. Each placed patch has a rarity filter of 1 in 100. The shrub can be composted, and it can be cut on a Cutting Board.

Cutting a Tomato Shrub on a Cutting Board yields 1 Tomato Seeds, a 20% chance of 1 Tomato, and a 10% chance of 1 Green Dye.

Usage

Food

A Tomato restores 1 drumstick and 0.6 saturation. Villagers count it as food worth 1 food point, which affects breeding. Pigs also accept Tomatoes as food through the vanilla pig food tag.

Tomato Sauce

Two Tomatoes cooked in a Cooking Pot produce one Tomato Sauce. The recipe takes 100 ticks and grants 0.35 XP. Tomato Sauce restores 4 drumsticks and 3.2 saturation, which is more than a single Tomato.

Tomato Sauce is a common ingredient in several mod meals, including pasta with meatballs, fish stew and fish and chips.

Rotten Tomato

A Rotten Tomato is a throwable item. Using it throws a Rotten Tomato entity at a speed of 1.5 and consumes one item per throw. On hit it applies 0 damage and is discarded. A Dispenser placed in front of a Rotten Tomato can fire it as a projectile. The item can be composted at 85%.

Tomato Crate

The Tomato Crate is a storage block with a hardness of 2 and a blast resistance of 3. It stacks to 64 and is mined with an axe.
