The Organic Compost and Rich Soil are soil blocks added by Farmer's Delight that form a two-step upgrade path for farmland. Organic Compost is crafted from common materials and slowly transforms itself, through eight stages, into Rich Soil. Rich Soil is a fertile block that bone-meals the crop planted above or below it, can be tilled into a Rich Soil Farmland, and supports mushroom colonies. Both blocks are stackable to 64 and are mined with a shovel.

Obtaining

Organic Compost is crafted. Both of its recipes yield one block and use Dirt, Bone Meal and Straw; one uses Tree Bark and the other uses Rotten Flesh. The recipes are listed in the crafting table below.

Rich Soil has no crafting recipe. It is the finished product of Organic Compost: once a compost block completes its eighth stage, it turns into Rich Soil. Rich Soil is an ingredient in one recipe, the Planter. Rich Soil Farmland is not crafted; it is made by tilling Rich Soil (see below).

Village compost heaps are also generated in villages. The mod adds five compost-pile structure pieces to the house template pools of the plains, snowy, savanna, desert and taiga villages, with pool weights of 5, 3, 4, 3 and 4 respectively. Generation is controlled by the generateVillageCompostHeaps config option, which is enabled by default.

Usage

Organic Compost

Organic Compost is a randomly ticking block with eight composting stages, numbered 0 to 7. Each random tick it has a chance to advance one stage. At stage 7, a successful tick converts the block to Rich Soil instead. Starting from stage 0, a block therefore needs eight successful ticks to become Rich Soil.

The chance per random tick is calculated from the 3×3×3 area around the block:

  • Light: 0.05 if the brightest sky-light value above a neighbouring position is 12 or lower, or 0.10 if it is higher than 12.
  • Water: +0.10 if any water source or flowing water is in the area.
  • Compost activators: +0.02 for each activator block in the area, up to 26 blocks.

The chance therefore ranges from 0.05 to 0.72 per random tick. A block in a bright, watered location surrounded by activators advances far faster than one in a dark, dry place. The compost activators are brown mushroom, red mushroom, podzol, mycelium, Organic Compost, Rich Soil, Rich Soil Farmland and the mushroom colony tag.

A comparator reading a composting block outputs a signal of 8 minus its stage, so a fresh block (stage 0) gives a signal of 8 and a block one tick from completion (stage 7) gives a signal of 1. Organic Compost emits mycelium particles while it is active.

Organic Compost counts as a valid mushroom grow block (minecraft:mushroom_grow_block) and as a valid spot for mushroom colonies.

Rich Soil

Rich Soil is a randomly ticking block that performs two actions on each tick:

  • Mushroom conversion: if the block directly above is a brown or red mushroom, that mushroom is replaced by the matching mushroom colony.
  • Bone-meal boost: otherwise, with a chance of 0.2 per random tick, the block tries to bone-meal a plant. The chance is set by the richSoilBoostChance config option, which accepts values from 0.0 to 1.0; a value of 0.0 disables the boost. The block above is boosted first. If the block above is a plant that is not in the planted_from_below tag and can receive bone meal, it is boosted. Otherwise, if the block below is in the planted_from_below tag, that block is boosted instead. Plants that cannot be boosted, such as those in the unaffected_by_rich_soil tag, are skipped. Blocks in that tag include grass, short grass, ferns, twisting vines, big dripleaf, pink petals, sandy shrub and wild crops.

Rich Soil is a dirt-type block for the purposes of bamboo planting (minecraft:bamboo_plantable_on) and the vanilla minecraft:dirt tag. It is a valid mushroom grow block, so mushroom colonies can grow on it. Trees do not replace it with dirt or podzol when they grow, and tree trunks do not overwrite it.

Rich Soil Farmland

Rich Soil Farmland is created by tilling Rich Soil with a hoe, provided that the block above is air. It behaves as farmland for crop purposes: it has the same moisture system, with moisture values 0 to 7, and it hydrates from nearby water. Trampling does not turn it into dirt, and it keeps its state. Villager farmers treat it as farmland, so they will tend crops planted on it.

Plants and mushroom colonies

The main use of Rich Soil is growing crops. Each random tick gives a 20% chance (at the default config value) to bone-meal the crop above, so crops on Rich Soil receive extra growth compared with ordinary farmland. The boost applies to any crop that accepts bone meal, including the Farmer's Delight crops such as Rice.

A fully mature mushroom colony requires Rich Soil to grow, and shearing a colony yields mushrooms.
