Rice is a family of crop items and blocks added by Farmer's Delight. It consists of the Rice seed, the Rice Panicle crop, the Rice Bale and Bag of Rice storage blocks, and Wild Rice, a naturally generated plant. Rice is an ingredient in many Cooking Pot meals, and Cooked Rice is a low-cost source of the Nourishment effect.

Rice grows only in water. Every rice block must sit in a full water source block (water depth 8), so rice fields are built in shallow ponds or flooded plots rather than on dry farmland.

Obtaining

Rice is obtained by planting the Rice seed, by harvesting Wild Rice, by crafting from Rice Panicles or Bags of Rice, from chests, and from villagers.

Planting and growth

The Rice seed is planted on dirt in a full water source block. Growth is driven by random ticks and needs light: the plant only advances when the block above it has a light level of at least 6. It has four growth stages (age 0 to 3). At age 3 it grows a Rice Panicle block above itself, provided the space above is empty. A mature Rice Panicle is the harvest point for Rice Panicles and for straw. Bone meal advances a rice plant by 1 to 4 growth stages per use, and it can also advance the panicle above a mature plant.

Wild Rice

Wild Rice is a naturally generated plant. It is placed in wet overworld biomes (the c:is_wet/overworld tag) under a rarity filter of 1 in 20. It is a two-block-tall plant that grows in water on dirt or sand, and it can be placed only on a water source block with air above it. Bone meal succeeds on Wild Rice 30% of the time. Wild Rice is also a cutting board ingredient: a knife used on a cutting board with Wild Rice turns it into 1 Rice, with a 50% chance of also producing 1 straw.

Nine Rice Panicles craft into a Rice Bale, and nine Rice craft into a Bag of Rice. The reverse recipes return the nine items. A Rice Panicle also crafts into a single Rice, and a cutting board turns a Rice Panicle into 1 Rice and 1 straw.

Rice is common in village houses in desert, taiga and badlands villages, where each chest has a roughly 70% chance of containing rice. It also appears in abandoned mineshafts (about 40% per chest) and in the shipwreck supply chests added by Farmer's Delight (about 36%).

Straw is a second harvest from rice. A knife used on a mature Rice Panicle (age 3) drops straw, as it does on grass, tall grass, sandy shrubs and mature wheat. See straw for those sources.

Rice is sold by two of the trades that Villager Trades lists:

• The Farmer apprentice buys 20 Rice for 1 emerald per trade, up to 16 trades, for 5 experience.
• The Wandering Trader sells one Rice for 1 emerald per trade, for 12 experience.

Usage

Rice is a cooking ingredient and a storage crop. It has three main uses.

Cooking

Rice is an ingredient of the Cooking Pot, and Cooked Rice is the basic rice meal. Cooking a single Rice in the pot takes 100 ticks (5 seconds) and gives 0.35 experience. Cooked Rice gives 6 hunger points and 4.8 saturation, and it grants Nourishment I for 30 seconds, the shortest duration in the Nourishment system. While Nourishment is active, hunger exhaustion is held at zero, so the food bar does not drain, and the player can eat even when full.

Rice is also an ingredient in several multi-item meals, such as Fried Rice, Mushroom Rice, Stuffed Pumpkin, Unusual Fish Soup and Dog Food. Rolls such as the Salmon Roll and Kelp Roll use Cooked Rice as an ingredient, as described in Sandwiches, Wraps and Rolls. Storage

A Rice Bale is a 9-panicle storage block. It has a hardness of 0.5, is broken fastest with a hoe, and can be placed facing any of the six directions. It is flammable (flammability 20, fire spread speed 60), so it burns readily near fire. Landing on a Rice Bale deals only 20% of the normal fall damage. Rice Bales compost at 85%, which makes surplus bales a useful compost input. A Bag of Rice is the same kind of storage block made from Rice, with a hardness of 0.8.

Villagers

Rice is one of the items that villagers want to collect, and the pack adds it to the villager food list with a value of 2 food points. Onion, Tomato and Cabbage are each worth 1 food point, so Rice is the most valuable of the new crops for villager food. See Villagers.
