Born in Chaos Melee Weapons are the swords, axes, hammers, daggers, spears and maces added to Fear Nightfall by the Born in Chaos mod. Most of them carry an effect that triggers on hit, on right-click or while held, so they are more than damage upgrades. Ranged and magic weapons from the same mod are covered on Born in Chaos Staffs and Ranged Weapons.

Players obtain the weapons in three ways: crafting from Dark Metal and Bone Handles, finding them in chests in Born in Chaos structures, or getting them as drops from Born in Chaos mobs such as the Skeleton Thrasher, Zombie Clown, Door Knight, Pumpkinhead and Lord Pumpkinhead.

Crafting

Most of the weapons are crafted at a crafting table. Their ingredients are Dark Metal items (ingots, nuggets and blocks), Bone Handles and materials from other Born in Chaos items such as Nightmare Claws, Seeds of Chaos and Spiny Shells. Dark Metal comes from Dark Metal Deposits, which need an iron tool to mine.

Three weapons have no recipe and can only be obtained from chests or mob drops: the Pitchfork, Soulbane and Stop Hammer.

Two weapons are made by smithing. The Carrot Sword is a Smithing Table upgrade of a Sweet Sword that uses a Transformative Flower and a carrot. A Frostbitten Blade is used as the base of an Icy Sweetness food item in the same kind of upgrade (see Born in Chaos Food).

Loot and drops

Dark Tower structures (forest, plain and taiga variants) hold the Nightmare Scythe, Great Reaper Axe, Dark Ritual Dagger and Skullbreaker Hammer in their chests at chest_level_3. Clown Caravan structures (plains, savanna and taiga variants) hold the Intoxicating Dagger. The chance per chest for each weapon is in the table below.

Each mob drop is a single item. Skeleton Thrasher drops the Skullbreaker Hammer, Zombie Clown drops the Intoxicating Dagger, Door Knight drops the Pitchfork, Pumpkinhead drops the Soul Saber, and Lord Pumpkinhead drops the Soulbane. Persistent variants of the Skeleton Thrasher, Zombie Clown and Door Knight drop the same items.

Because the pack places Born in Chaos structures about 30% closer together, and gives them 6× weight where they share a structure set with other structures, Dark Towers and Clown Caravans appear more often than in the base mod. Both are horror structures, in line with the pack's theme.

Usage

Each weapon's effect is applied by its attack procedure, which runs when the weapon hits a living target. Several effects are conditional on the wielder's armour, the target's type or the target's health. The durations below are in game ticks (20 ticks per second).

On-hit effects

  • Nightmare Scythe. A hit applies Gaze of Terror and Wither to the target and Regeneration to the attacker. With the full Nightmare Mantle set worn, the target receives Gaze of Terror for 250 ticks and Wither III for 100 ticks, and the attacker receives Regeneration III for 40 ticks. Without the full set, the values are 100 ticks of Gaze of Terror, Wither II for 60 ticks and Regeneration III for 20 ticks.
  • Great Reaper Axe. Each kill starts a rampage. Consecutive kills raise the rampage through five tiers, named Light, Medium, Strong, Furious and Rampant Rampage. Each tier is a separate Born in Chaos effect.
  • Dark Warblade. The weapon is too heavy to swing without help. While it is held, the wielder receives the Overly Heavy Weapon effect for 10 ticks, refreshed every tick, unless they have Strength or any rampage tier. Overly Heavy Weapon lowers movement speed, attack speed and attack damage. A hit applies Bone Fracture for 200 ticks and Block Break for 360 ticks.
  • Stop Hammer. A hit applies Slowness at level X for 5000 ticks (about 4 minutes).
  • Skullbreaker Hammer. A hit made while the wielder is falling (not on the ground, in water or in lava) stuns the target for 25 ticks. The stun does not apply to a target that is already stunned or blocking.
  • Shell Mace. A hit on an aquatic mob applies Weakness for 160 ticks. Against targets in water or rain, aquatic mobs and drowned, the mace also applies Barbed Attack and deals extra damage based on the target's current health: 8 health from a target above 16 health, 4 from a target above 12, and 3, 2 or 1 from a target at exactly 12, 11 or 10 health.
  • Spirit Divider. A hit on an entity in the forge:spirit tag deals 15 extra damage and applies Barbed Attack for 10 ticks. While Barbed Attack is active, the bonus does not apply again.
  • Soul Saber. A hit applies Soul Stratification for 120 or 160 ticks, depending on the target and the world settings. When the effect ends, the target takes damage equal to 20% of its current health plus 1, provided it still has at least 4 health.
  • Intoxicating Dagger. A hit applies Poison III for 60 ticks and the Intoxication effect for 220 ticks.
  • Spider Bite. A hit applies Poison I for 300 ticks and infects the target. An infected enemy can leave a baby spider when it dies. While the sword is held, any baby spider the player summons is tamed automatically.
  • Frostbitten Blade. A hit applies Bone Chilling for 240 ticks. Repeated hits on the same target strengthen the effect, up to a cap set in the source.
  • Soulbane. A hit applies Soul Stratification. While the wielder wears Lord Pumpkinhead's Hat, the hit also envelops the target in infernal fire.

Right-click abilities

  • Frostbitten Blade. Right-clicking creates an icy splash that freezes all enemies around the player. The splash has a 240-tick (12-second) cooldown.
  • Sweet Sword. Right-clicking eats a bite that restores 3 hunger and 2 saturation, with a 200-tick (10-second) cooldown.
  • Dark Ritual Dagger. Right-clicking an animal, or one of the controlled minions in the source, sacrifices it. The target takes 100 damage and the player receives Regeneration and Strength for between 300 and 1,500 ticks. The level and duration depend on the sacrificed mob's maximum health, and on whether the full Nightmare Mantle set is worn. Animals with more than 15 maximum health cannot be sacrificed. Each sacrifice costs one point of durability, and the player then has a 30-tick Sacrifice effect that stops another sacrifice in that window.

Armour and set interactions

The Nightmare Mantle set changes the Scythe and Dagger effects described above. The Lord Pumpkinhead's Hat changes the Soulbane's fire effect. Hats and other armour are listed on Born in Chaos Armor and Hats.
