Dark Metal is a family of metal items added by Born in Chaos for the Fear Nightfall modpack. It covers the raw materials (Piece of Dark Metal, Pile of Dark Metal, Dark Metal Nugget, Dark Metal Ingot), the storage block, an ore block, a full armour set, a sword, and the Smithing Template and Armor Plate used to craft the armour. The material comes from the mod's horror structures and from its mobs.
Obtaining
Dark Metal is obtained in three ways: mining the Dark Metal Deposit ore, looting structure chests, and killing the mod's mobs. Crafting and blasting then turn the raw pieces into ingots, nuggets and blocks.
The Dark Metal Deposit is an ore block with hardness 4 and blast resistance 17. It requires an iron-tier pickaxe or better. Breaking it in Survival with Silk Touch gives the deposit block itself. Breaking it in Survival without Silk Touch gives a Piece of Dark Metal, which is affected by Fortune, and releases 2 to 4 experience orbs worth 2 experience points each. The Piece of Dark Metal is the entry point for every other Dark Metal material.
Crafting
The conversion chain is 1 Pile of Dark Metal = 9 Piece of Dark Metal, 1 Dark Metal Ingot = 9 Dark Metal Nugget, and 1 Dark Metal Block = 9 Dark Metal Ingot. Piles and pieces are blasted in a blast furnace. A Piece of Dark Metal blasts into a Dark Metal Nugget in 100 ticks for 1 experience point, and a Pile of Dark Metal blasts into a Dark Metal Ingot in 400 ticks for 7 experience points. Dark Metal appears in structure chests, most of them in the horror structures of Born in Chaos. The Dark Tower structures in the forest, plains and taiga biomes are the main source, with the Firewell and the clown caravan chests also containing some pieces. Mob drops come from the Skeleton Thrasher, Fallen Chaos Knight, Door Knight, Bonescaller, Barrel Zombie, Spirit Guide and Missionary. The chances per chest and the drop counts are listed in the table below.
In Fear Nightfall, the Born in Chaos structures, including the Dark Tower and Firewell, are placed about 30% closer together than in the original mod, and they receive 6 times the weight where they share a set with other structures.

Usage
Dark Metal's uses are armour, a weapon, a storage block and a crafting ingredient for the mod's own recipes.
Armour set
The Dark Metal armour set is made of four pieces: helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots. Each piece is crafted at a smithing table from a netherite piece of the same type, a Smithing Template and a Dark Metal Armor Plate. The Armor Plate is made from 4 Monster Skin and 5 Dark Metal Ingot. The Smithing Template is made from 7 Seed of Chaos, an existing Smithing Template and a Dark Metal Ingot, which produces 2 templates. The material's armour values are 3 for boots, 7 for leggings, 10 for the chestplate and 4 for the helmet. The armour toughness is 5.0, the knockback resistance is 0.1 and the enchantability is 20. Dark Metal Ingot is the repair material. Durability is listed in the table below.
Wearing all four pieces at once gives the set bonus:
- Wither removal: the Wither effect is removed from the wearer on each check while the full set is worn. This is the "Wither resistance" stated in the set's tooltip.
- Rampage at low health: when the wearer's health is 6 or less (three hearts), the wearer gains Rampant Rampage for 5 seconds and Hunger III for 5 seconds. Rampant Rampage is the top tier of the Rampage effect ladder, which the Great Reaper Axe builds with consecutive kills.
The Rampage bonus only applies at low health, so the set's strongest effect is a late-fight effect rather than a constant one.
Sharpened Dark Metal Sword
The Sharpened Dark Metal Sword is made from 2 Dark Metal Ingot and a Bone Handle. It has 1100 durability, an attack damage of 7 and an attack speed of 1.7. Its special property applies only to undead mobs, and only when the mob is not already affected by the Barbed Attack effect:
- Against undead mobs, the sword deals 14 damage.
- If the attacking stack has the Smite enchantment, the sword deals 20 damage instead.
- Each hit applies the Barbed Attack effect to the target for 10 ticks (half a second). While that effect is active, the bonus does not trigger again on the same target.
The sword is tagged as a weapon for enchanting and as an acceptable tool for Traveler's Backpack.
Crafting ingredient
Dark Metal Nugget and Dark Metal Ingot are crafting ingredients in many of the mod's recipes. Dark Metal Nugget is used in 34 recipes, including the Dark Ritual Dagger and the Phantom Bomb. Dark Metal Ingot is used in 37 recipes, including the Dark Metal Block and the Dark Metal Armor Plate. The full list is in the table below.

The Dark Metal Block is a storage block with hardness 7 and blast resistance 100. It requires a stone-tier pickaxe or better. It is crafted from 9 Dark Metal Ingot, and it crafts back into 9 ingots.
