The Charms are a set of five rare, durable items added by Born in Chaos: the Charm of Strength, Charm of Resistance, Charm of Stealth, Charm of Endurance and Charm of Fury. Each one grants a timed status effect when used, but only while an Ethereal Spirit is in the player's inventory, and each use consumes that Ethereal Spirit. A sixth item, the All Charm, shares the name but has no effect. The charms are dropped by the Missioner and Missionary Raider mobs, so they are obtained by fighting horror-themed enemies rather than by crafting.

Obtaining

Each of the five active charms is dropped by both the Missioner and the Missionary Raider, with a count of exactly one per drop. The loot tables are shown below. All five charms carry the Born in Chaos rareloot item tag and have the Rare rarity.

Charms cannot be stacked, so each one occupies its own inventory slot. Each charm has 5 durability and is fire resistant, so fire and lava do not damage them.

Usage

Right-clicking a charm activates it. The charm checks the player's inventory for an Ethereal Spirit. If none is present, the activation does nothing and the charm is not used up. If one is present, the activation proceeds in the following order:

  1. One Ethereal Spirit is removed from the inventory.
  2. The charm loses durability. If the charm has any level of Unbreaking, it loses 1 durability with a 50% chance per use. Without Unbreaking, it loses 1 durability on every use.
  3. The charm enters a 1200-tick (60-second) cooldown, shown on the item. The cooldown applies to that charm type only.
  4. The charm's status effect is applied to the player for 1800 ticks (1 minute 30 seconds). The main or off hand plays a swing animation, and a charm-specific sound plays.

The Ethereal Spirit is therefore a per-use cost. Because a charm lasts 5 durability, a charm without Unbreaking can be activated 5 times, and with Unbreaking it lasts about 10 activations on average. Each activation requires a fresh Ethereal Spirit, so the Ethereal Spirit supply limits how often the charms can be used.

Effects

Charm Effect granted Level Duration Notes
Charm of Strength Strength III 1800 ticks Increases melee and other damage
Charm of Resistance Resistance II 1800 ticks Reduces incoming damage
Charm of Stealth Invisibility III 1800 ticks Makes the player invisible
Charm of Endurance Speed III 1800 ticks Also sets the player's saturation to 20, which fills hunger
Charm of Fury Medium Rampage (Born in Chaos) I 1800 ticks Also grants Regeneration IV for 20 ticks (1 second)

The duration in the table is taken from the code. The in-game tooltip for each charm reads 1:50 for the duration, which does not match the 1800-tick value in the code. Players should expect the code value of 1 minute 30 seconds.

Charm of Fury grants the Medium Rampage tier of the Rampage effect, which is one of the five tiers of the Rampage effect in the pack. Rampage normally builds up through consecutive kills with the Great Reaper Axe, and the Charm of Fury grants a fixed tier without that requirement. See Born in Chaos Effects for the full Rampage ladder.

Ethereal Spirit

The Ethereal Spirit is a separate item, stackable to 64, that every active charm requires. Its use takes 30 ticks. The item is consumed by the charms, not by its own use.

Items

  • Charm of Strength: grants Strength III. Requires an Ethereal Spirit.
  • Charm of Resistance: grants Resistance II. Requires an Ethereal Spirit.
  • Charm of Stealth: grants Invisibility III. Requires an Ethereal Spirit.
  • Charm of Endurance: grants Speed III and fills saturation. Requires an Ethereal Spirit.
  • Charm of Fury: grants Medium Rampage and a brief Regeneration IV. Requires an Ethereal Spirit.
  • All Charm: a common item that stacks to one and has no use behaviour in the source code. It is not an active charm and does not need an Ethereal Spirit.
