The Better Desert Temple is a large multi-room structure added by YUNG's Better Desert Temples. It takes the place of the vanilla desert pyramid in Fear Nightfall, where vanilla pyramids are blocked. Each temple is a complex of puzzle and trap rooms with a boss, mob rooms, tomb chambers and chests. Until its boss, the Pharaoh, is killed, players inside the temple are slowed by Mining Fatigue whenever they are in survival mode.

Generation

The temple generates in desert biomes. The mod's biome tag covers vanilla deserts and several modded desert and savanna-style biomes, including Terralith and Biomes O' Plenty lush deserts and Project Vibrant Journeys desert shrubland and verdant sands. The structure table below lists the six biomes that resolved in this pack.

The structure is placed in the surface step, with a start height between Y -24 and Y -4 and placement projected to the world surface. It is never placed within 48 blocks of an ocean or river biome. It keeps at least 6 chunks away from villages.

The mod's default placement spacing is 30 chunks with a separation of 20. Fear Nightfall's sparse-structure tuning scales this to a spacing of 57 chunks and a separation of 38, so temples are much rarer than the mod default. In the 26 km² sample used to balance the pack, no temple generated. Temples are not horror structures, and deserts stay mostly normal in the pack's horror distribution, so they are not tied to the night-time horror biomes.

Vanilla desert pyramids are disabled by default in the mod's config (the "Disable Vanilla Pyramids" option). The /locate structure minecraft:desert_pyramid command fails with a message that points to /locate structure betterdeserttemples:desert_temple instead.

Layout

A temple is built from a start piece called temple_anchor and a set of template pools that together contain 313 pool elements drawn from 198 structure templates. Pieces are grouped into hall rooms, puzzle rooms, tomb rooms, statues and mob rooms. The largest groups are the hall rooms (5×5 halls and hall doorways), the big puzzle rooms and the main corridor pieces.

Named rooms include:

  • a throne room;
  • a crushing corridor and a drowning trap;
  • a water maze;
  • parkour and wipeout hall rooms;
  • four tomb rooms (tomb_0 to tomb_3), the chambers that hold the tomb chests;
  • seven statues;
  • a pharaoh mob room, a slime room and a creeper room, described under Inhabitants below;
  • a set of pillar pieces.

Blocks inside the temple are changed at placement by about 27 processors registered under the mod's namespace. Placeholder orange stained glass turns into sand, sandstone, stairs or cut sandstone. About 1% of those placeholder spots become suspicious sand that uses the vanilla desert pyramid archaeology table. Item frames and armour stands are filled with random equipment and storage items at fixed chances, such as stone and golden swords and axes (5% to 10%), chainmail and golden armour stand helmets (30% and 20%), and bread, potatoes, honey and seeds in storage frames (1% to 20%). These chances can be changed in the mod's JSON files under config/betterdeserttemples/neoforge-1_21/.

Inhabitants

Each temple piece has a set of spawn overrides that apply only inside that piece's bounding box. Husks spawn in the monster category at 10 to 32 per piece. Cats and rabbits spawn in the creature category at 4 each per piece. Husks are common desert monsters, so the temple's husks add to normal desert spawns and can exceed the monster cap in dense areas.

Creepers and slimes appear only as template mobs in their own rooms. Each mob-room pool roll chooses one of creeper, slime or the Pharaoh with equal weight.

Pharaoh

The Pharaoh is the temple's boss. It is a husk with a fixed player-head skin, and the mod identifies it by that head texture. Its template attributes are:

  • maximum health of 60;
  • attack damage of 3;
  • armour of 2;
  • movement speed of 0.23.

Its template equipment is a golden sword, a golden chestplate, golden boots, leather leggings, and a player-head helmet with the skin. The mod does not give it any custom AI or goals, so it uses standard husk behaviour. The Pharaoh stores the position where it spawned, so the temple can still be identified if it wanders away from the room.

Killing the Pharaoh, or removing it with a discard, marks the temple as cleared. The clear is written to the region file straight away, so it survives a server restart. Players inside the temple lose the mining penalty, and the killer hears a sound. The "Eternal Slumber" advancement is granted for this, and the "An Ancient Tomb" advancement is granted when the temple is first discovered.

Note: The pack's Halloween event helmets used to overwrite the Pharaoh's head and break the boss. The pack now skips mobs that already wear a helmet, so the Pharaoh keeps its skin.

Loot

Each temple has ten chest loot tables, and its suspicious sand uses the vanilla desert pyramid archaeology table. The generated tables below show every item and chance. The highlights are:

  • Pharaoh hidden chest (pharaoh_hidden): guaranteed Arcane Essence, a Golden Sword and Sand. It also has the best rare items in the temple, including Legendary Ink (10%), a Poisonward Ring (9%) and a Frostward Ring (8%).
  • Pharaoh tomb chest (tomb_pharaoh): Diamond (43%), Enchanted Golden Apple (42%), Diamond Horse Armor (37%) and an Enchanted Book (43%).
  • Library (library): Enchanted Books at 52% and the Ancient Knowledge Fragment at 79%.
  • Statue (statue): the only source of an Amulet of Concentration (1%) and a Rotten Spell Book (2%). The Standard Traveler's Backpack appears at 7%.
  • Food storage (food_storage): Golden Apple (13%) and Enchanted Golden Apple (12%).

Temple chests are not injected into other structures. The pack excludes trims and the Blazing Fishing Rod from these chests. Loot from Tide, Iron's Spells and Traveler's Backpack is added on top of the mod's items.

Tips

  • The mining penalty is the main danger. Mining Fatigue III slows digging, and it is reapplied every 5 seconds while you stay inside an uncleared temple. Drinking milk removes it, but it is reapplied on the next check while you are still inside. Clear the Pharaoh before you spend long periods digging in the temple.
  • The penalty only affects survival players. Creative players can explore freely.
  • The Pharaoh has 60 health and deals 3 attack damage in its template. Bring food and a sword.
  • Husks are numerous inside the temple's pieces. Fight them in a corridor or a doorway, not in the open hall rooms.
  • Once the temple is cleared, the mining penalty does not return, so you can loot the chests at your own pace.
  • To find a temple, use /locate structure betterdeserttemples:desert_temple.
