The Ghouling is a companion creature added by The Graveyard. It is not a hostile mob: it never spawns in the world, and every Ghouling is summoned by its owner with one of five Bone Staffs. Once summoned, it follows its owner, fights for them, and can carry a coffin or sarcophagus as a portable storage chest. Each staff is bound to a single Ghouling at a time, and the Ghouling it summons is bound to the player who used the staff. Ghoulings are unrelated to the hostile Ghoul mob, which appears in the Graveyard's nightly horde and in biome spawns.

Spawning

The Ghouling has no biome spawn entries and is not placed by any structure, so it cannot be found naturally. The only way to obtain one is to use a Bone Staff. Because it is never generated in the world, the Fear Nightfall changes to Graveyard structure placement and biome weights do not affect it.

To summon a Ghouling, the player right-clicks a block with a Bone Staff. The Ghouling appears on the block above the clicked position, plays a summoning animation for 50 ticks (2.5 seconds) with an emergence sound, and displays the message "I hear and obey..." on the first summon. A staff belongs to the player who first uses it. Using the staff on a block has no effect for any other player.

A staff summons a new Ghouling only when the previous one has died. While a staff's Ghouling is alive, including when it is unloaded because its chunk is not loaded, using the staff again does nothing. When the Ghouling dies, its entry is removed from the owner mapping, and the next use of the staff summons a replacement with full health and the message "Death... is a mere inconvenience." The owner and Ghouling pairing is saved to the world folder on each level unload and reloaded when the level loads, so it survives server restarts.

The five staffs each summon a Ghouling of a different colour variant:

The staffs have no crafting recipe. The Lich, summoned at an altar, drops one of the five staffs when it is killed. The Lich's loot table makes a single roll over the five staffs, so each one has an equal 1 in 5 chance.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

Stats

A Ghouling has 50 health (25 hearts), 5 armour, 2 armour toughness, 6.5 attack damage, a movement speed of 0.31, a follow range of 35 blocks and 0.5 knockback resistance. It is 0.7 blocks wide and 2 blocks tall. It heals 0.01 health per tick (0.2 health per second) whenever it is below its maximum health.

Combat

A Ghouling attacks in melee. Each swing has a 20-tick cooldown, and the damage is applied on tick 12 of its 14-tick attack animation, so one swing takes about one second from start to finish. Its swing deals its 6.5 attack damage to the target, reduced by the target's armour.

It does not seek out targets on its own. It takes a target in three cases, in this priority order:

  1. A creature that last hurt the owner.
  2. The target the owner last attacked.
  3. A creature that hurts the Ghouling itself.

It never attacks its owner, creepers, ghasts, or other creatures owned by its owner. When it is on fire or freezing, it panics and runs away instead of fighting.

Following and commands

By default the Ghouling follows its owner. It starts moving toward the owner when more than 10 blocks away, stops when within 2 blocks, and teleports to the owner's area when more than 12 blocks away. Commands use the Bone Staff:

  • Right-click the Ghouling with a Bone Staff while not crouching. This toggles sitting. A sitting Ghouling displays "I shall stay here.", stays in place, stops following, and stops attacking the owner's targets. It still fights back when hurt. Right-clicking again displays "I follow." and resumes following.
  • Right-click the air with a Bone Staff. The Ghouling attacks the living creature in the player's crosshair within 100 blocks. Creatures owned by the player, such as their tamed animals and minions, are not targeted. The Ghouling is set to stop sitting before it attacks.
  • Crouch and right-click the air with a Bone Staff. The Ghouling clears its target and teleports to the owner, with a soul-particle effect and a 15-tick teleport timer.

If a non-owner tries to use a staff on the air, the message "I don't obey your orders, you are no master of mine!" appears and the use fails.

Coffin storage

A Ghouling can be equipped with a coffin or sarcophagus. The owner right-clicks it with the item, which is consumed unless the owner is in creative mode, and the Ghouling gains a 54-slot inventory with the same layout as a double chest. The following items are accepted:

  • Sarcophagus
  • Oak, Dark Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Acacia, Mangrove, Warped and Crimson coffins

Bamboo and cherry coffins are not accepted. A Ghouling holds only one coffin at a time. The owner crouches and right-clicks it to open the inventory. The inventory is accessible only to the owner. Equipping the first coffin awards the advancement "The dead shall serve".

No item drops.

Tips

  • Sit the Ghouling to hold it at a fixed spot, such as a gate or a storage container. Crouch-teleport it to recall it after it has wandered off following a target.
  • Use the air-target command against a dangerous creature, such as a Revenant or a Ghoul from a nightly horde. The command only reaches a Ghouling within 100 blocks of its owner.
  • Items in a Ghouling's coffin storage are at risk in a fight. On death, the coffin and every stored item drop where the Ghouling died, except items with the prevent-equipment-drop enchantment.
  • After a Ghouling dies, using its staff summons a replacement at full health. Using the staff while the Ghouling is alive does nothing.
