The Grappling Hook is a utility item added by Critters and Companions. It is a projectile that is thrown in the direction the player is facing. When it strikes a block it sticks, and the player can then be pulled toward that point or tethered to it. The hook is a fast way to cross gaps, climb ledges and close distance on a target. It is crafted from silk and iron, so silk is the main requirement for obtaining it.
The hook uses the mod's default settings in Fear Nightfall. The values are listed in the configuration section below.
Obtaining
The Grappling Hook is crafted. Its only ingredients are silk and iron, and silk comes from two sources:
- Jumping Spider mobs drop silk when they are killed.
- Silk Cocoon blocks drop silk among other items when they are broken. They generate in forest and jungle biomes and in lush caves.
Crafting
The recipe uses four silk and one iron ingot in the pattern shown in the grid above, and yields one hook. The hook has a stack size of 1.
Usage
Using the hook has two stages: throwing, and then either pulling or tethering. Right-clicking with no hook out throws one. Right-clicking while a hook is out pulls the player to it and removes the hook.
Throwing
A thrown hook is launched from the player's eye height in the direction the player is facing, at 1.5 blocks per tick. Throwing does not cost durability and plays a bobber-throw sound.
The hook flies until it strikes a block. It then sticks and plays a slime squish sound. The hook attaches only to blocks. The mod checks only block collisions when deciding whether the hook sticks, so it does not latch onto mobs or other entities.
A hook that is out is removed in these cases:
- the player moves more than 32 blocks away from it;
- the hook item is no longer in either of the player's hands, for example after switching items or dropping the hook;
- the player right-clicks to pull.
Tether
While the hook is stuck, the player is tethered to it. If the player moves farther from the hook than the distance at which it stuck, each tick the game adds velocity toward the hook. The added speed is 0.01 blocks per tick for each block of distance, capped at 2.0 blocks per tick. The hook's own velocity is held at zero while it is stuck.
The tether pulls the player back toward the hook but does not hold the player in place. Within the tether distance the player moves freely.
Pulling
Right-clicking while a hook is out performs a pull, after which the hook is removed:
- If the hook is stuck, the player is launched toward it. The speed is the configured launch speed divided by 4 (0.25 blocks per tick at the default), multiplied by the distance to the hook, and capped at 2.0 blocks per tick. The pull is therefore faster over longer distances.
- If the hook is within 1.5 blocks of the player's height, the pull adds 0.25 blocks per tick of upward velocity, which helps the player clear ledges.
- If the hook is not stuck, the pull only removes the hook and does not move the player.
A pull costs one point of durability whether or not the hook was stuck, so right-clicking to cancel a throw still wears the hook.
Falling
When the pull or the tether turns a downward vertical velocity into zero or upward movement, the player's accumulated fall distance is reset. Otherwise the accumulated fall distance is scaled down in proportion to the change in vertical speed. This reduces fall damage after a hook drop.
Durability and repair
The hook has 256 durability by default. Each pull costs one point, and throwing and the tether cost none. When durability reaches zero the hook breaks. Silk is the repair material for the hook, so it can be repaired in an anvil with silk. The hook can be enchanted, and its enchantability value is 1.
Configuration
The mod's grapplingHook settings control the hook's behaviour. Fear Nightfall uses the default values:
| Setting | Default | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Launch speed | 1.0 | Scales the pull speed (divided by 4 per tick) |
| Max speed | 2.0 | Caps the speed of the pull and the tether, in blocks per tick |
| Max distance | 32.0 | Distance from the player at which the hook is removed, in blocks |
| Enable durability | true | When off, the hook has no durability bar and does not break |
A restart is required for changes to take effect.
Tips
- Pulling toward a hook stuck on a block at the same height or slightly above gives the upward lift that helps clear ledges. A hook stuck far above the player pulls the player up with little extra lift.
- Do not right-click to cancel a throw. The cancellation still costs one durability point.
- Keep spare silk for repairs.
- Hostile mobs are a risk when the hook is used at night in horror biomes. The tether does not stop the player from being attacked during travel.
