Traveler's Backpack is a mod that adds wearable and placeable backpacks, sleeping bags, a fluid hose and a set of upgrade items. A backpack is worn in a back slot and gives the player extra storage, along with optional functions such as crafting, smelting, auto-pickup and item magnetism. Many backpack variants also carry a mob- or block-themed ability that gives a small passive bonus while worn. Players care about the mod in Fear Nightfall because its backpacks are a common reward from chests and mobs, and because one of its variants, the Creeper backpack, can save the wearer from a lethal blow.
Overview
The mod adds about 45 backpack variants across five storage tiers, sixteen colors of sleeping bag, a tank and hose system for carrying fluids, and the upgrade items that customize a backpack. It adds no mobs, no biomes, no worldgen, and no enchantments, potions or damage types. Its content is obtained through crafting, librarian trades, loot in vanilla and modded chests, and mob equipment. In Fear Nightfall it is a source of early and mid-game storage and survival gear, found in the chests of many structures.
Content
The standard backpack is the basic leather-tier item. Its variants are listed on the Backpacks page, and the functional and tier upgrades are described on Backpack Upgrades. Sleeping bags, which attach to a placed backpack, are covered on Sleeping Bags.
Backpacks come in these groups:
- Standard: the leather-tier backpack, with several recipe variants and a smithing recipe.
- Tier variants: Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite backpacks, created by applying a tier upgrade to a lower-tier backpack at a smithing table. See Smithing and Gear Upgrades.
- Material and block variants: Lapis, Redstone, Coal, Quartz, Bookshelf, Emerald, End, Nether, Sandstone, Snow, Sponge, Cake, Cactus, Hay, Melon and Pumpkin.
- Mob-themed variants: Creeper, Dragon, Enderman, Blaze, Ghast, Magma Cube, Skeleton, Spider, Wither, Warden, Bat, Bee, Wolf, Fox, Ocelot, Horse, Cow, Pig, Sheep, Chicken, Squid, Villager and Iron Golem. Each is made at a smithing table with a mob-part ingredient.
The mod adds no mobs of its own. Instead, some mobs spawn wearing a backpack; see Mob equipment under Mechanics.
Mechanics
Wearing and storage
Only one backpack can be worn at a time. A player who tries to equip a second one sees the message "Other backpack is already worn". With Accessories and Curios installed and back-slot integration enabled, the backpack goes into the back slot of that system. Otherwise it is equipped through the back slot button in the player inventory. Right-clicking a backpack equips it by default, and right-click removal is off.
Storage depends on tier. The leather backpack has 27 storage slots, 2 upgrade slots and 2 tool slots. The Iron backpack has 45, 3 and 3. The Gold backpack has 63, 4 and 4. The Diamond backpack has 81, 5 and 5. The Netherite backpack has 99, 6 and 6. Each tank row holds 1000 units at every tier. A Blank Upgrade, applied to a placed backpack by shift-clicking it, resets the backpack to leather and drops its contents.
The two tool slots accept a diamond pickaxe and any item in the #c:tools tag, but not shulker boxes unless the server enables them. The keybind for swapping tools places the tool slots into the hotbar while the backpack is open.
Upgrades
Upgrades sit in the right-hand upgrade slots. Each installed upgrade is switched on or off with a keybind for the first to fourth upgrade slots. The functional upgrades are:
- Tanks: two fluid tanks, used by the hose.
- Crafting: a crafting grid inside the backpack.
- Furnace, Smoker and Blast Furnace: smelting inside the backpack.
- Pickup: collects matching items from the ground into the backpack and cancels the vanilla pickup for them.
- Jukebox: plays music discs. Its volume follows the Note Block and Jukebox sliders.
- Magnet: pulls items within 5 blocks, checked every 10 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Void: a trash slot, and filters that destroy items entering the backpack from pickup or from hoppers.
- Feeding: eats food from the backpack, checked every 100 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Refill: moves selected items from the backpack back into the player's inventory, checked every 5 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Lantern: a light source. It only shows dynamic light when the client has LambDynamicLights installed.
Each functional upgrade can be disabled in the configuration.
Hose and tanks
The Hose works with a Backpack Tank and a Hose Nozzle. It has three modes: Suck, which picks up fluid; Spill, which releases it; and Drink. The nozzle selects which tank the hose uses. The hose's fluid actions fire the mod's own pick-up, spill and drink events, which other mods can cancel. Tough As Nails water canteen and potion effects plug into the same fluid hook when that mod is installed.
Sleeping bags
A sleeping bag is attached to a placed backpack by shift-clicking the backpack with it. The "Use Sleeping Bag" button in the backpack screen places the bag next to the backpack. Quick sleeping bag, which is on by default, removes the deployed bag when the player wakes up if the backpack is no longer there. Setting a spawn point to a sleeping bag is blocked by default.
Abilities
Worn backpack variants can have an ability. An ability is turned on and off with its keybind, and it is forced on by default. Abilities can be disabled in the configuration. The main abilities are:
- Netherite, Diamond, Iron and Gold: +4, +3, +2 and +2 armor.
- Emerald: +1 Luck.
- Enderman: +1 block and entity interaction range.
- Pumpkin: cancels Enderman anger aimed at the wearer.
- Warden: +4 maximum health. Melee hits apply Slowness II for 2 seconds.
- Fox: +10% movement speed, and changed flying speed.
- Lapis: 15% of experience orbs picked up are doubled.
- Creeper: when a lethal hit would kill the wearer and the ability is off cooldown, the wearer survives at 1 health. Effects are cleared, the wearer gains Regeneration I for 450 ticks, Absorption II for 100 ticks and Fire Resistance for 400 ticks, and a power 3.0 explosion goes off at the wearer's position without damaging blocks. The cooldown is 1200 to 1800 ticks.
- Blaze: fireballs that hit the wearer are removed, and falls of 3 blocks or more are reset.
- Ghast: Ghasts do not retarget the wearer unless the wearer has hurt them.
- Wither: melee hits apply Wither II for 3 seconds, and the wearer's Wither effect is removed each tick.
- Bee: each melee hit deals 1.0 extra damage and applies Poison I for 4 seconds.
- Spider: lets the wearer climb walls, and stops elytra flight on collision.
- Cow: clears harmful effects, grants 20 food and Regeneration I for 10 seconds. The cooldown is 480 to 540 ticks.
- Chicken, Cake and Melon: cooldowns of 360 to 600, 360 to 480, and 120 to 480 ticks.
- Hay: a 15% chance to add a carrot, potato or beetroot when the wearer breaks grass, and a 40% chance to double the drop from a fully grown crop.
Several other abilities apply temporary effects from a configuration list, lasting 250 to 300 ticks. These are Bat (Night Vision), Magma Cube (Fire Resistance), Squid (Water Breathing and Night Vision), Dragon (Regeneration and Strength), and Fox (Jump Boost). The Quartz backpack's Haste is not in the default list of allowed abilities, so it is inactive by default.
Mob equipment
Zombies, skeletons and endermen can spawn with a backpack in their chest slot in the overworld. Piglins and wither skeletons can do so in the Nether. Each eligible spawn has a 0.5% chance of receiving one, and only if the chest slot is empty. A spawned backpack gets a random sleeping bag color, a 50% chance of a Tanks upgrade, and a 75% chance of random dye. The backpack drops on death only when a player kills the mob.
Death
With Keep Inventory enabled, the backpack is kept. Otherwise the backpack is placed as a block where the player died. If there is no room, it drops as an item, and the player receives a chat message. With Curios or Accessories integration, the backpack stays in the back slot, and a backup is saved that can be restored with the /tb restore command. Server operators can use /tb access, /tb clear, /tb remove and /tb unpack.
Slowness
The mod can apply Slowness to players carrying too many backpacks. This is off by default. When enabled, a player with more than 3 backpacks in the worn slot, main inventory or offhand gets Slowness, one level per extra backpack, to a maximum of level 10.
Changes to vanilla
- Backpack item entities cannot be damaged, are fire immune, are not destroyed by explosions, and do not despawn.
- Backpack item entities are protected from the void. Void Protection makes them float back up with dragon-breath particles.
- Backpack blocks are added to the Wither and Ender Dragon immunity tags, so those mobs' explosions do not destroy them.
- The standard backpack is added to the dyeable item tag.
- A librarian trade sells a Traveler's Backpack for 48 to 111 emeralds, once per restock.
- Vanilla chests in Abandoned Mineshaft, desert pyramids, Dungeon, Woodland Mansion, Bastion Remnant, nether bridges, End City and Shipwreck receive backpacks or tier upgrades. The pillager outpost loot table has a 75% chance to add an Iron Golem backpack. See Loot and Chests.
- Enderman anger is cancelled for a player wearing a Pumpkin backpack.
- While a backpack is worn, the pick block action sends a server request to pick an item that is stored in the backpack but not in the player's normal inventory.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack's YUNG's Better Structures replace several vanilla structures, and their chests do not contain every item that the vanilla chests did. The pack extended Traveler's Backpack loot to those replacement chests, so backpacks and tier upgrades appear in the replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds. The mod only adds loot to a chest table when the table name matches the vanilla name exactly. The pack therefore mirrors the same items and chances into the other structure mods' chest tables.
The pack also changes the mod's network behaviour. Once an hour, the mod fetches a supporter list from a remote gist on a dedicated server. In Fear Nightfall the request is pointed at localhost, so the server does not contact the external address.
The Creeper backpack's lethal-damage ability works against any attacker, so it is a survival item at night in the pack. The Wither and Bee variants change the wearer's melee hits, which affects combat against any mob in range.
