Gargoyle Statues are a family of ten two-block-tall decorative blocks added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. Each variant can be duplicated by crafting, and most are found as wall decoration in the Chapel and Sanctum structure in Soul Sand Valley. The statues are also the only blocks that Apparition will seek out and possess.
Four variants (Ossified, Trample, Phase and Ghoul) are possession targets. The other six have no interaction with Apparitions and exist only as decoration. Any statue can be salted with honeycomb, which makes it immune to possession.
Obtaining
The statues are not dropped by mobs, sold by villagers or placed in loot chests. Players get them in two ways.
Crafting
Each variant is crafted from eight Wraithing Flesh surrounding one statue of the same variant, which yields two statues of that variant. The recipe duplicates the statue in the centre and cannot change its variant. The recipes unlock once the player first obtains Wraithing Flesh.
Natural generation
The Chapel and Sanctum structure in Soul Sand Valley places statues as wall decoration. The Ghoul Gargoyle Statue is placed from a separate set of pieces, and the Treacherous Gargoyle Statue is placed in a brazier chest piece. Both are part of the wall-decor pool, where each piece has equal weight with the other wall pieces, so the statues appear only when that pool selects them.
Advancement
Obtaining any one of the ten variants grants the Lorekeeper challenge advancement, which is part of the Soul Sand Valley advancement tree. The advancement requires only one statue of any variant in the player's inventory.
Usage
Placement and breaking
A statue is two blocks tall. Placing the lower half requires a solid top face beneath it and free space above for the upper half, which is placed automatically. The statue faces the opposite direction from the player who placed it. Each block has hardness 1 and blast resistance 5. No tool is required to break them, and each stack holds 16 items.
Only the lower half drops an item. Breaking the upper half destroys the whole statue without a drop, in both survival and creative mode. The lower half can also drop its item when an explosion destroys it. Each half has a collision box 14/16 of a block wide and deep, so the statue does not fill a full block.
Salting
Right-clicking the upper half of a statue with honeycomb salts it. Salting is one-way, and a salted statue cannot be salted again. A salted statue is not a valid target for any Apparition, so it is safe from possession.
Possession by Apparitions
When an Apparition first ticks, it is assigned a random personality from 1 to 4. The personality determines which statue the Apparition seeks:
| Personality | Statue | Mob it becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ossified | Vessel |
| 2 | Trample | Stampede |
| 3 | Phase | Ecto Slab |
| 4 | Ghoul | Banshee |
An Apparition with a matching personality moves to the nearest unsalted statue of its type within 8 blocks. When it comes within about 1.35 blocks of the statue, it converts into the mob listed in the table. The statue remains in place. Possession only happens when the Apparition is not salted and its possession cooldown is zero. The cooldown lasts 300 ticks after each possession. Apparitions with personality 2 do not attack players, while the other personalities do.
These behaviours are controlled by the mod's configuration. Possession of statues is enabled by default, and Apparitions can be salted by default. Apparitions spawn in Soul Sand Valley.
Items
The variants differ only in rarity, appearance and whether an Apparition can possess them:
- Ossified, Trample, Phase and Ghoul are the four possession targets, listed in the table above.
- Treacherous is the statue placed in the brazier chest pieces of the Chapel and Sanctum structure. It has no possession behaviour.
- Wretched, Sealed, Cirripedia, Occult and Obfuscated are decorative statues with no possession behaviour.
