The Carcass is a non-hostile reanimating corpse added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. It spawns dormant, lying motionless on the ground, and a player can revive it with flint and steel or a fire charge. A revived Carcass guards its area by attacking hostile mobs, but it never targets players. A dormant Carcass takes no damage from ordinary attacks, so it is safe to walk past. Carcasses are placed inside Sanctum structures in Soul Sand Valley, where the mod's other monsters are a danger.
Spawning
The Carcass has no natural biome spawns and no spawn weight in any biome. It is placed in Sanctum structures, which generate by concentric rings in Soul Sand Valley (see Chapel and Sanctum). A Carcass can also be created with a
Carcass Spawn Egg or the summon command. Spawning has no time, light, difficulty or group-size requirements: each Carcass spawns alone.
Every Carcass spawns dormant, whatever its source. The Sanctum's monster spawn list covers skeletons, Vessels, Banshees and Apparitions, but not Carcasses.
A separate False Carcass is made by waxing a skeleton with Treacherous Wax. It is a different entity and is not covered by the spawn table below.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Behavior
A Carcass has two states, dormant and reanimated, and its hitbox changes with them. Dormant, it measures 2.2 by 1.0 blocks. Reanimated, it measures 1.4 by 1.3 blocks. It is fire immune in both states, cannot be leashed, and never despawns or is removed for distance. Entities never push a Carcass.
Dormant state
A dormant Carcass does not move, attack or look at players. Ordinary damage returns no effect, and it cannot die. Two sources do affect it:
- A projectile that is on fire, such as a flaming arrow, reanimates it when it hits.
- Damage that bypasses invulnerability, and any hit from a player in creative mode, removes the Carcass from the world immediately.
Reviving
Right-clicking a dormant Carcass with flint and steel or a fire charge starts reanimation. A fire charge is consumed unless the player is in creative mode. The revival triggers the Revive Carcass advancement. The Carcass plays its reanimation animation for 22 ticks (about 1.1 seconds), then becomes reanimated.
Reanimated state
A reanimated Carcass has the following stats:
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 30 (15 hearts) |
| Melee damage | 5 (2.5 hearts) per hit |
| Movement speed | 0.21 |
| Follow range | 16 |
Its AI runs the following goals, in priority order:
- Melee attack on its current target.
- Move toward a target within 32 blocks at speed 0.9.
- Look at players within 6 blocks, stroll randomly and look around.
Its target selector picks hostile monsters, the entities that carry the game's Enemy marker, such as zombies and skeletons. It excludes Creepers and Stampedes. It has no goal for retaliating against an attacker, so a player who strikes a Carcass does not turn it against that player. While reanimated, it pushes nearby entities.
When a reanimated Carcass's health falls to zero, it collapses. A death sound plays, and after 25 ticks (about 1.25 seconds) it goes dormant again with its health restored to full. A Carcass cannot die permanently.
Drops
A Carcass has no loot table and drops nothing. Its only "death" is the return to dormancy, so it gives no drops. The table below shows the drops from the game data.
No item drops.
Tips
- To station a guard, revive a Carcass where you want it. A reanimated Carcass attacks any hostile monster within its follow range of 16 blocks, except Creepers and Stampedes.
- A collapsed Carcass can be revived again at once. The mod stores a 36000-tick reanimation cooldown when a Carcass collapses, but nothing reads it, so a collapsed Carcass can be revived immediately.
- The monsters of a Sanctum, including Vessels, Banshees and Apparitions, are the real threat there. A dormant Carcass does not help against them.
