Soul Slate is a dark stone block added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. It is the base of a large building family: slabs, stairs and walls, a brick set, a tile set, a pillar, and etched and chiseled variants of the bricks and tiles. Its paler form, Pale Soul Slate, is a separate, softer block that generates naturally in Soul Sand Valley. Soul Slate is also one of the items found in the supply chests of the Sanctum structure, which is placed in Soul Sand Valley.
Soul Sand Valley is a dangerous biome. Apparitions spawn there and can possess other mobs, so builds and expeditions in the biome need preparation.
Obtaining
The base Soul Slate block has no crafting recipe, and no worldgen feature places it as terrain. Players get it from Sanctum supply chests. The other members of the family are made from it by crafting or stonecutting, and Pale Soul Slate is made from it as well.

The recipes above show every other way the family is made.
Natural generation
Pale Soul Slate generates in Soul Sand Valley and in the Black Ice Glaciers sub-biome. It is placed in two ways:
- A main feature makes up to 78 placement attempts per chunk. Each attempt makes a disk of 4 to 6 blocks in radius and 2 blocks in half-height, replacing netherrack and existing Pale Soul Slate.
- A surface feature makes up to 10 placement attempts per chunk, with the same radius and a half-height of 1, replacing the blocks in the mod's Soul Slate-replaceable block tag.
In the Black Ice Glaciers sub-biome, Pale Soul Slate also appears as blobs of 7 to 10 blocks in radius that replace netherrack. The pack keeps this generation enabled. It can be turned off with the paleSoulSlate setting in the mod's common config, which defaults to on.
Soul Slate itself is not placed by any worldgen feature. Bone Pikes and Soul Swirls grow on Soul Slate and Pale Soul Slate surfaces.
Loot and drops
Soul Slate is one of the items in the Sanctum supply chests (netherexp:chests/sanctum_supply). Each chest has an 86.3% chance to contain it, with an average of 16.1 blocks in each chest that has it.

Usage
Mining
Soul Slate and Pale Soul Slate need a pickaxe of iron tier or better. The rest of the family needs a pickaxe. The table below gives each block's hardness and blast resistance.

Pale Soul Slate has a blast resistance of 1, so an explosion destroys it far more easily than the full Soul Slate block.
Soul Speed and soul fire
The Soul Slate family is in the vanilla Soul Speed block list, so the Soul Speed enchantment works on it. The family is also listed as a valid base for soul fire, which can burn on those blocks.
Etched and chiseled variants
Etched Soul Slate Bricks, Chiseled Soul Slate Bricks, Etched Soul Slate Tiles and Chiseled Soul Slate Tiles have three light states:
- Unlit: light level 0. This is the default state.
- Lit: light level 4. Right-clicking an unlit block with flint and steel or a fire charge lights it.
- Waxen: light level 3. Right-clicking an unlit block with Treacherous Wax makes it waxen. Right-clicking a lit block with Treacherous Wax also changes it to waxen.
